Solved Several BSOD titles, computer restarts only when idle

Good Evening!

I've been having several different BSOD's. I've read many different threads that only contain parts of my problem
the BSODs have many different names including:
SYSTEM_THREAD-EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
CRITICAL_SERVICE_FAILED
NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
BAD_POOL_HEADER
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Curiously my pc only restarts when I'm not using it. The power options are set to high performance since I read it may be related to sleep. I updated the driver of my video card and have uninstaled DAEMON tools since it is known to cause problems related to ntoskrnl.exe. ntoskrnl.exe is the driver causing the problem according to bluescreenview. I currently find myself going slithly insane and frustraded. I hope you can help me! I've noticed that my available ram is = to my cached ram which I don't know if is good or bad or strange or normal.

I have checked my RAM and my Hds with diagnostic tools and memtest, they are A OK

Thank you in advance

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8.1 64bits
ntoskrnl.exe is the kernel (core) of the Windows operating system. It is protected by security features and the Windows System File Checker. As such, if this file was to blame, you'd be experiencing many more problems other than the occasional BSOD.

In most cases this file is blamed because another file (typically a 3rd party driver) has corrupted the memory space that ntoskrnl.exe considers as it's own. When this happens, ntoskrnl.exe typically finds unknown data (from the 3rd party driver) in it's memory space. When this happens, the OS panics and throws a BSOD to prevent damage to the system.

When you removed Daemon Tools, did you also remove the sptd.sys driver? Instructions here:
Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: Disk-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

From what I've seen, your memory usage looks normal. Where did you get the numbers that show the available RAM is equal to your cached RAM?

These disks are disabled. Why is this?
WDC WD1600BEVT-22ZCT0 ATA Device IDE\DISKWDC_WD1600BEVT-22ZCT0___________________11.01A11\5&FCA5AB8&0&0.1.0 This device is disabled.
SAMSUNG HD081GJ ATA Device IDE\DISKSAMSUNG_HD081GJ_________________________GE100-07\5&22840B5D&0&1.1.0 This device is disabled.
I would suggest either enabling them, or removing them from the system.

MSI Afterburner (along with Riva Tuner and EVGA Precision) are known to cause BSOD's in some Windows systems (it's driver is usually RTCore64.sys). Please un-install them immediately!

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

Out of 14 memory dumps there were 8 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case. Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

Please get a head start on the hardware diagnostics - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
NOTE: these symptoms were from the previous release of OverDrive. The new release uses the same driver name, but is dated from 4 November 2013.
Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.
Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

Daemon Tools is still listed in the 2 November memory dump. Please be sure to follow the instructions above and ensure that it's been removed. Search the system for copies of the dtsoftbus01.sys driver (don't delete them yet, just let us know and we'll discuss how to remove them safely).

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hello Usasma, Thank you very much for the in-detail reply

I will start duing the things you suggested once I finish this post

About the HDs I disabled them in the beginning because I thought they were related to the BSODs since they are older and from my ladder PCs. Daemon tools was uninstaled right after my SF debug files were saved, that is why I think it is present in the debug.

I will reply with the results of the actions you've instructed me to take.

Thank you very much for your time and efford to help me.

And I saw the cached RAM = to available ram in the task manager

It seems the cached ram slowly increases until it has reached the same number as the available ram

As for the RAM issue, it doesn't sound right to me.
But I'm not as well versed in these sort of RAM issues as others are - so I'd suggest posting your question over in the General forums to see if someone with more experience can help out.

Good luck!

Hello usasma!!

I have already uninstalled DT, MSI afterburner and Overdrive

I have updated the chipset drivers and installed the video card driver as instructed

I have re-enabled the HDs that were disabled

I cleaned the desktop with a hairdryer and a smooth brush

I coundn't update the BIOS because windows 8.1 doesnt let me run the software to help me and I don't feel confident to do it otherwise

The good news is that I haven't had ANY BSODs since I've done the procedures and it seems my PC is back to normal!!

I used to have 8 restarts a day easily now I haven't had any!

I think the problem is solved!!

I have no malware running in my PC too

Thank you again so much for the efford and the instructions! It has been of grand help!

About the RAM I think windows caches the RAM to make programs faster, which sounds ok to me, cached ram and available ram have been equal for some hours now and there were no crashes.

I think the case is closed for now, Thank you very much.
