Solved Freeze/BSOD when gaming (or heavy use?)

Hello,

I am looking for some good people that might be able to help me with some random (so far infrequent) freezes.

The freezes I am experiencing have happened 3 times in total so far while playing a game (this has happened with GW2, Lichdom Battlemage and Hitman Absolution).

I have some additional errors in the event logs but the one that seems to point out the crash is the critical one and maybe one of the kernel ones? I have been unable to solve the other errors on my own as well, but if they are not affecting the system it's fine.

Memory test via USB showed no errors and I have also tried to ensure that my overclock isn't causing an issue either, so I'm really not sure what it could be besides the mobo or graphics or something else entirely.

Many thanks in advance for any assistance!

As you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

Event ID 41 Critical errors are Windows' way of saying it doesn't know why the system shut down. It can be caused by BSOD's, by hardware issues, or even by holding the power button down to shut off the computer. Please note the "BugCheck" entry just below the Event ID 41 Critical error - this is most likely the error that caused the system to shutdown unexpectedly.

MSI Afterburner (along with Riva Tuner and EVGA Precision) are known to cause BSOD's in some Windows systems (it's driver is usually RTCore64.sys). Please un-install them immediately!

All of the memory dumps are STOP 0x124 errorsThey are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case. Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

Please start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Many thanks for the detailed response!

I got rid of the MSI Afterburner and am currently declocking the CPU. I already checked the HDD, RAM and viruses, so no issues there.

I also got rid of the ASUS stuff for AsUpIO.sys , couldn't find an update unless I install all the utilities again.

Tried to update the Intel Smart Connect, but got an error stating that I do not have this enabled in the bios, so I'm checking that while declocking.

The ASUSFILTER.sys I found in the ASUS folders seems to be a version from 2013 and I couldn't find a way to install a new one without the ASUS suites. Can I move it somewhere?

I could do a clean re-install of windows in worst case scenario, as long as I know how to get the drivers without the ASUS bloatware.

I don't think that you need to reinstall at this point. Asus doesn't have a whole bunch of bloatware (compared to some others), but the safest/easiest way is using your Asus recovery disks/drive.

We'll need to look at some more memory dumps (if they occur)
Please zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with the next post (after any BSOD's). You may have to copy them to the desktop in order to zip them up.

Do not remove drivers - that may render your system unbootable.
The ASUSFILTER.sys driver isn't a worry to me at this point. But if needed I can suggest ways to safely remove it.
That will be after we look at any further BSODs

Finally, this work that we're doing is to help rule out the 3rd party drivers.
If, as I suspect, we rule them all out - then it's going to be a hardware problem.
That's why you'll need to run the hardware diagnostics that I suggested ( Hardware Diagnostics )

Sorry for the late confirmation, but I finally managed to trigger the issue at will with the Aida64 CPU cache test (I went through almost everything).

Turns out my OC was causing the issue as I couldn't reproduce it at all when not OCed with any games or tests. Issue was that I had put same multipliers to my cache in the CPU as my cores and as soon as I reverted those to default everything was fine.

Many thanks for the help and forcing me to look into the the overclocks (I probably wouldn't have thought of that as it was hard to reproduce at will).

This is very interesting. How did you overclock the system? It doesn't show in the memory dumps, so I'm interested in figuring out how it was done (so we can check that in other systems).

I am using the UEFI in the BIOS of my motherboard - Maximus VII Ranger (I'll take a screenshot later as I am at work).

Below the clock settings I also had settings for the CPU cache multiplier which I increased to the same levels without much thinking. It was set to 43 and I just put it in as default min 35 and max 39 (same as standard CPU boost for 4690k)

I suspect I could also have balanced it with the cache voltage, but I am kinda tired of testing for the moment and the PC has been working flawlessly for 2 days now (also ran cache test for 3 hours, where it would fail within 5 minutes otherwise).

Please do note (if testing in the future) that it would NOT crash if I ran ALL tests at once. It DID crash when I ran the cache test solo in Aida64.

First thing when OCing (I do that a lot) is to turn off all "Auto" features in BIOS, set everything manually and as well as auto downclocking and Turbo modes. Once you get everything working to full satisfaction you can try turning some power saving back on and see if any of them make any problems.

I can't turn off the downclocking. If I do and change the timers, turbo turns itself back on. I already tested with the manual options for the speeds and voltage, but none of the tests caught the cache issue at the time. Also the CPU is a bit of a dud since I have to use 1.25V for 43 and about 1.27V or more for 44 to get it stable. If I do change some of the options back, which ones would be most essential?

I would say, power saving options considering possibility of overheating at just the wrong moment.

Thanks Zwim! I gave up overclocking back in the XP days. Just too much trouble for the limited return that I got and I couldn't afford new hardware after I finished toasting my processors!
