Hang ---> corruption

While playing audio, using either WMP or MPC, the system may hang, with a reboot the only option.
This can occur after just minutes, or hours.

It's then evident that the NTFS is corrupt on both the SATA drive (Win 8) and an SSD drive (W7) - all partitions. CHKDSK /f fires up.

Otherwise the O/S runs as well as one might expect for a beta. Event viewer gives no clue to the problem.
The processor is a capable 2600K, latest drivers. W7, using exactly the same soft/hardware is problem free.

Hey, you can run the tool in the top most thread of this subforum then post the zip here. I'll likely find the cause even though there were no bsods.

If you have 3rd party antivirus (*cough* *cough* Norton/Symantec) or any others - they very often throw NTFS errors when there is nothing wrong with the disk(s). I would definitely uninstall any 3rd party security software in safe mode with the special tool for the specific product to do so.

If antivirus is not to blame (meaning, if you have no 3rd party ones) then see fafhrd's explanations here about chkdsk:

See attached. W8 also has a habit of hanging (not responding) - various apps and procedures - for 20-45' at random times.
No anti-virus here - ever. Only Windows Defender.

I have disabled "fast start up" Seems unlikely it's the cause, but we'll soon see...

I can see no software reasons why this might be happening. I would therefore start looking at hardware reasons, even though you say the other OS is well.

You can run Speccy as someone else recently did to fix their restart problem, to check that the PSU voltages are within spec.

Another thing you can do, but will take a little time, is to run this command for all of your storage partitions. Change X to match them each time. Do this from elevated (Admin) prompt:

chkdsk /r X:

Unless there is a fault is one of your latest drivers, which I have not seen anywhere else yet (so doubtful), there is likely some hardware funk needing to be sorted.

For best results, disable any overclocking and set the motherboard bios to Optimized Defaults. Overclocking can easily cause this too. Maybe also to make sure Virtualization is disabled in the bios, just as a temporary test.

Appreciate your analysis and time.

CHKDSK /r has been run on all storage partitions - both drives.
Virtualization is enabled, out of necessity, as there is an app in W7 that requires it. The box is not overclocked.

I hear that. Anyhow, you should check for any new bios update and install if there is one. Yours is already fairly recent though from 4/8/2011, version 1011.

Another thing I noticed is that you have 8 GB RAM. Sometimes that amount or more can throw a monkey wrench, depending on the motherboard and bios version.

We can start looking at the memory simply by running CPU-Z. You can make a screenshot each of the SPD and Memory tabs then post them here, if you wish. Sometimes manual bios tweaking can help, depending on the modules and motherboard. At other times, the memory is simply set wrong.

Other than that, I'm sure all the ram modules are exactly the same, but just thought I'd mention it in case not. Different modules installed can definitely cause this type of issue.

As far as storage drivers go, it seems like only the Windows 8 default driver is installed. Maybe look into installing the latest AHCI driver from Intel.com (Ven_8086) and/or Marvell (Ven_1B4B) for your chipset:

I note this entry many times in the event log for the system:

"A fatal alert was generated and sent to the remote endpoint. This may result in termination of the connection. The TLS protocol defined fatal error code is 70. The Windows SChannel error state is 105."

Windows 8 Terminal Service connection terminated when using TS Gateway

suggests the following Vista Hotfix:

Network connectivity fails when you try to use Windows Vista behind a firewall device

Seems rather like the:

Of course Windows8 is probably phoning home all the time with error reports. I think you need to explicitly opt out during the interactive phase of setup, rather than accept the express option. For me in the UK, the express setup leaves me with a US keyboard in the 32-bit version, but properly lets me choose my location in the 64-bit version asking my postcode.

The chkdsk/ file corruption is a symptom of the forced restart on the locked up system.

Thoughtful and helpful tips.

The SChannel error is commonly reported in various forums. The Windows firewall is disabled.
Don't BIOS upgrades primarily address updated CPUs? As GMan noted, it's recent.
Memory is matched. And, yes, chose CUSTOMIZED during install; virtually all "phone home" options are OFF.

If problems persist these suggestions will be at the top of the list. Thanks folks!

You're welcome.

No, bios updates address all sorts of issues under the sun. Screen flickers, RAM problems, audio not working well when UAC question box is opened - just some examples. The list is endless.
