BSOD Driver Power State Failure

I have an ASUS S56CM laptop with Windows 8.1.

For the past few days I have been getting a BSOD (Driver Power State Failure) upon start up. Leading up to this, my computer would freeze completely at random times not that often and I had to do a hard shut down to fix it.

The past three days have been identical. When turning my computer on from a completlely off state, it takes forever to start then eventually gives me the BSOD. The 0% thing never loads so I do a hard shut down and turn the computer back on. It still takes forever to start (8 minutes +) but I don't get a BSOD and am able to use the computer fine. Then when shutting down, it takes over 6-8 minutes as well. Before all this, my computer would get to the log in screen in under one minute.

I had a program called "WhoCrashed" but it hasn't logged any of the BSOD's from startup, only ones that I had when the computer was already on. For one of them, it told me the error may have been caused by iastora.sys which was the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver. I tried to delete this as well as installing a newer version but it didn't fix anything.

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!
Add to that the release of the Win10 preview and my system messing up - and I'm way behind on replying to topics. Sorry!

Do your still need help with this problem?
I will be notified if you reply to this topic and will respond within 48 hours.

Hi meowcat & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

I am extremely sorry for the delay caused in responding but we do get overwhelmed at times :(
Anyways, I have analysed your dump files and below has been provided an analysis of the same for informative purposes :-

According to the analysis, the Intel Rapid Storage Driver is at fault here. Furthermore, if we check the time stamp of the driver, we get the below :-
Code:
2: kd> lmvm iastora
start end module name

This is pretty old and the driver from this time period is known to cause issues.
Kindly update this driver from the Manufacturer's Support website. If there is no driver available, download the latest version from this link :-

Thanks,

I updated to the latest driver on the support page for my laptop which was for Windows 8, not 8.1: VersionV11.7.0.1013, 2013/01/30. I am still having the same issue, extremely slow start-up and the Driver Power State Failure BSOD when starting up after the computer has been off for awhile.

I attached new debug files.

Your BIOS dates from 2012. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard. If possible, use the "inside Windows" flash mechanism (if your OEM provides one).

HotSpotShield is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems. Please uninstall it immediately.
It's driver is hssdrv6.sys - I haven't seen anything on it recently, so removing it will tell you if it's a problem or not.

Uninstall Diskkeeper (just a hunch). It's from before Win8.1 came out - so it may not be compatible.
Worst case, you can reinstall it later on.

These devices don't have drivers installed:

Please visit the manufacturer's website and install ALL available drivers!
If unable to find all the drivers to fix this, please generate the following report:
Press Win and R to open the Run dialog
Type in "perfmon" (without the quotes) and press "Enter"

In the left hand pane:
- expand "Data Collector Sets", then expand "System"
- Right click on "System Diagnostics" and select "Start"

Wait until the report shows up in the right hand pane (approximately 60 seconds)
If you're impatient, left click on the latest report in the left hand pane and you'll see the "Generating report..." status message.

- expand "Reports", then expand "System"
- left click on the latest report (to select it)
- right click on the latest report and select "View", then select "Folder

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I updated many drivers, the Intel Thermal Framework one seems to have fixed most of the unknown driver issues.. However, I'm still getting the Driver Power State BSOD on start up and have to always press the power button to turn off my PC and start it again normally with no BSOD.. I also deleted hotspot shield and expresscache.

Before I received any reply to this thread, I did try driver verifier and it caused me to go into a BSOD/restart loop prior to my computer even starting so I had to go into safe mode and turn it off.

The latest BIOS seems to be from 2012 so not sure if that would help or if I want to risk that..

I think no memory dumps are being created since I'm only getting BSODs now when I'm starting the PC and not during use.

I've attached the two files.

Kernel Power - Event ID 41 is for the BSODs when I start the PC.

Thanks for your help!

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8.1
The Admin event log shows errors related to licensing just prior to the EventID 41 Critical errors.
Are there any hacked/pirated products on this system?
Should this be a pirated copy of Windows, please be aware that we may not be able to fix it (as the hacks that were done to activate it will cause the OS to behave differently than we expect it to). If that's the case, our efforts to help may just waste your time. Secondly, the forum rules prohibit assisting with pirated software - so the topic would be closed if that is the case.

Beyond that, there are no signs of a definite error that's causing the BSOD's. As such, if it's not the licensing issues, then it's most likely a hardware problem. Please run these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please monitor your temperatures with this free software: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting
Normally temps shouldn't exceed:
CPU - 60ºC
GPU - 80ºC
HDD and other components - 40ºC

Nothing really significant from the Perfmon report.

Could you please try this free tool (made by blueelvis)? Then include it in your next post?
MSINFO Zipper - OMG Debugging!!!
You'll probably get a SmartScreen notice, just select "Run anyway" (sometimes hidden in the "More info" link)
That way I'll be able to have a look at an updated copy of the MSINFO32 report.
