BSOD DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE after closing applications

I've had this error come up when closing apps (World of Warcraft most frequently), as well as once a minute or two into watching a full screen video (from the Blizzard app launcher).

The failure never seems to happen when I'm 'doing' things, only after starting or closing applications. I'm not sure if that's coincidental or not, but I thought perhaps it might be something to do with the system attempting to switch between the Nvidia graphics card (GTX 860M) and the Intel HD4600 one.

I took a look at the dump files the diagnostic tool generates for me, and it's pointing to 0x9F_VRF_3_ACPI_IMAGE_pci.sys as the faulting driver. I used device manager to attempt to find updates for the PCI Express Root Complex driver (using the windows search), and it's as up to date as Windows is aware of.

This laptop also included a "Smart Update" tool, which searches for updated system drivers, as well as Nvidia controls for driver updates and changing settings based on game profiles. I updated the Nvidia driver using their tool, but have had additional BSODs (same code) since then. The "Smart Update" tool doesn't find any new drivers for anything, though it does say that my Nvidia graphics card is a higher release than the "official" version. I'm not keen on downgrading, though, since the dump looks to point to the pci.sys driver, rather than a video card driver.

Windows is current on all updates, though I did find two optional ones which I will install after posting this (one is for intel graphics, the other looks unrelated).

*Edit 2: Had another BSOD after installing Windows updates, so no help there :( Will generate a new dump if needed.

Any suggestions for next steps? Thanks!

Unfortunately, Windows isn't very aware at all when it comes to driver updates. It only checks it's own database - so if the manufacturer or the OEM hasn't uploaded the driver - then Windows won't know that there is an update available. This has gotten better as the Windows line matures - but still is a far cry from being a very useful tool. I only use it for drivers when setting up new PC's - and then I visit the PC manufacturer's site to see if they have any more recent updates.

Always upload the memory dumps after a crash. Every additional data point helps us out (and I use an automated tool to generate the results of the analysis). It's easiest just to zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with your next post (you may have to copy it to your Desktop in order to zip it up). I'll sort out which one's haven't been run yet and will run an analysis on it/theml.

Please turn Driver Verifier off. To do this, open up verifier.exe and select "Delete existing settings", then click on "Finish". Restart the system in order for the changes to take effect.

I got 3 things from the memory dumps:
- there is involvement with the video, so we have to update video drivers and test the video hardware
- there are traces of networking components in the raw stack text of each memory dump - so the problem may be related to networking drivers
- the VIA Audio drivers date from 2009 - so they may be causing issues. They must be updated or replaced.

Start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics As we suspect video problems, start with the video tests.

Then replace (uninstall then reinstall a fresh copy) your video drivers. Get the latest, Win8.1 compatible version available from the Gigabyte website for your laptop (the Intel graphics drivers, the nVidia graphics drivers, and the switching software drivers).

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

VMfilt64.sys - this driver hasn't been added to the DRT as of this run. Please search Google/Bing for the driver if additional information is needed.

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

The drivers that are [DEL]struckout[/DEL] don't have updates available (AFAIK).
DO NOT delete them, just leave them be.

    I'm handsome and a snappy dresser :0)
Thanks for the update. Here's what I've done so far:

I disabled verifier.

I reinstalled the drivers for both video cards.

I ran the video card hardware test (5 minute run, video card never went above 80 degrees, with no errors noted)

I reinstalled the audio drivers.

I reinstalled the wireless drivers.

The other two out-of-date drivers (both linksys) I was not able to update. They appear to install automatically when I plug in my mouse, and the logitech website does not list anything newer. Given that they're over USB, and nothing related to USB was in the logs (I think), I'd like to try and continue without losing my access to my mouse, if at all possible.

Additionally, I didn't find any software that was responsible for switching between video cards. I'm not really sure where to look, in that regard.

Anything else that I should be doing? Should I run that video test longer than 5 minutes? Wait and hope we don't see any additional BSODs?

Thanks again!

Wait and hope!

Keep using the mouse. I've only seen one instance of BSOD's that could be caused by the Logitech drivers and that was a very long time ago (I can't remember exactly when). I only singled them out because they were old - not because of any known problems with them.

As for video switching, it's sometimes in the video drivers and it's sometimes a separate program.
As you didn't find it, I wouldn't worry about it for now. If it's available, it would be on the driver download site for your particular system.

Did the video card temperatures level out (did they stay at 80ºC for a while?)?
If not, then run it until they level out (shut it off if the temps get too high - usually 90 or 95ºC)
If it does get too high, check the cooling solution for the card (dirt/dust/fan working/enough power/etc)

And then we wait...............

The video card temp hit 75 very quickly, then climbed to 79 over the next minute or so, and hovered between 79 and 80 for at least a few minutes before I stopped it. I was pretty confident that if it increased, it would only be another degree or so, it was pretty solid there.

Also, had another BSOD last night. Same message, but it happened when the system was trying to come out of sleep. Re-ran the log tool thing, so you can catch any driver mistakes I might have made. All that is attached.

Thanks again for the help.

In the old days, errors like this were caused by video drivers.
But since Vista debuted, they can be caused by chipset, video, storage, networking (and I'm sure other drivers)

Check to be sure that you have the latest update to your UEFI/BIOS. I have seen some issues recently w/Gigabyte motherboards and UEFI/BIOS dating from 2014 that needed an update to fix BSOD's

In this case, I see a lot of networking stuff in the raw stack text - so that's another thing to look at.....

Start by updating the VIA audio drivers from here: GIGABYTE - Laptop - Laptop - P series - P27G v2
These were released on 28 May 2014, so they might have a newer driver than that which is currently installed on your system (it dates from 30 Jul 2009). The one in the download dates from 04 Mar 2014.

Then update the Bluetooth, LAN, WLAN, Airplane Mode, TouchPad and any other drivers that (on your system) date from before 17 Oct 2013 (the date that Win8.1 was released). These drivers are listed below.
