WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR & a few others

Hello, since I build my PC roughtly a year ago, I've been having BSODs regularly 1-2 times a month. Most of the time I get the same WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, however there was once instance when I got SYSTEM_THREAH_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and MEMORY_MANAGEMENT errors.

BSODs appear seemingly randomly, however I believe it might be related with the games I'm running. Don't know whether that is a useful piece of information, since this machine runs 24/7 and games run at least 60% of the time it's on (overnight too). But there were a few cases when I almost instantly (a few hours of play) got BSODed while running 3 games simultaneosly. Also vast majority of BSODs happened while I was actively using my PC.

There are no overheating issues, I've already looked into that. Not overclocked either.

Thank you for your time.

Recently I've seen BSOD issues on Gigabyte Z87 boards that were fixed with a UEFI update.
Yours is version F4, and dates from 2013-05-16
Please update your UEFI to the latest version.

Less than 10% free space on your C: drive
About 7% free space on your V: drive
Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

This device is disabled in Device Manager. Is this deliberate? If so, why?

Please make sure that you enable it, then update it's drivers. Feel free to disable it again once the drivers are updated.

Many Live Kernel Events in the WER section of MSINFO32.
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here: Windows Kernel event ID 41 error "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first" in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2

The memory dumps seem to give a pattern that's typical of hardware/compatibility/low-level driver issues.
As such, hardware diagnostics are needed. Here's a link to some free tests: Hardware Diagnostics
And, since there's a possibility of driver issues, please also run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Please remove TrueCrypt as it's no longer supported by the manufacturer and it has some known security vulnerabilities: TrueCrypt

I have seen BSOD issues related to Comodo and to virtual machine software - but no firm signs are present in the dump files. It may be that these are a concern, but we'll look into them later on.

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

The drivers that are [DEL]struckout[/DEL] don't have updates available (AFAIK).
DO NOT delete them, just leave them be.

Please update your UEFI to the latest version.
Done. Updated to F7.

Regarding C: drive, I believe windows was the the "peak" of it's behind the scenes operations. I own around 80/120 GB, and something else seems to eat up 30GB of space. But I'll work on reducing C: drive's space usage. Now V: drive is a different case: it's a 3TB drive, so there should be plenty of space left for anything windows related (Around 200GB ATM).

This device is disabled in Device Manager. Is this deliberate? If so, why?
NVIDIA High Definition Audio HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10DE&DEV_0040&SUBSYS_14583606&REV_1001\5&22539C53&0&0001 32
Please make sure that you enable it, then update it's drivers. Feel free to disable it again once the drivers are updated.
Not deliberate, at least not done by me. The device itself is not disabled but has an exclamation mark near it, and inspecting it's properties reveals this:
A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternative driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)
Could you advise what would be the best course of action here?

Many Live Kernel Events in the WER section of MSINFO32.
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
I get the following error when trying to save the file.
The system cannot find the file specified

On it. It would seem though that it doesn't log temperatures to file - I need to manually save them.

Many STOP 0x141 errors in your video drivers. Please see this link about these errors: Please follow these troubleshooting suggestions: Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117 - Sysnative Forums
Isn't the thread about a different kind of errors? I would like to point out that resetting drivers (when they recover) are an extremely rare case on this machine, and I don't seem to remember getting a BSOD related to 0x116. I assume you're memtioning this, because it might relate to all the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSODs so I ran the checklist with that in mind. (Sorry if I missed the whole point of this part)

  2. Insufficient/problematic PSU - that is something worth looking into, since I had my fill of PSU related problems in the past with a different build. But I have no idea how to go around that.
  3. Corrupt driver install / Driver conflicts - hard to test. Any ideas? Although the mention of realtek drivers having conflicts with video drivers cought my eye - see the info I posrted about the disabled device in the beginning of my post. Could this be related? I guess this will be addressed in the next part (Driver Verifier)
  4. Overheating - doubt it, but I'm running the program you recommended ATM.
  5. Faulty graphics card - beats me.

Lots of reading there, but I guess that's about it. If you any other things to suggest please do.

The memory dumps seem to give a pattern that's typical of hardware/compatibility/low-level driver issues.
As such, hardware diagnostics are needed. Here's a link to some free tests: Hardware Diagnostics
TODO on my part
I'd like a confirmation on what I shoud run. From what I gather I should basically run memory and hard drive diagnostics? As those two are the only categories that I've found on that page.
Regarding memtest - how many passes would you recommend? Doing a full 32GB test takes lots of time.

And, since there's a possibility of driver issues, please also run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
TODO on my part
I have my doubts about this line:
Creating a System Repair Disk is a bit different in Win8 tho - go to the Start Screen and type "recovery drive" (without the quotes) and select the Settings charm in the right sidebar. Then select/run the "Create a recovery drive" app. Don't insert a USB drive and click the "Next" button. At the bottom left corner of the next screen will be a link that says "Create a System Repair disc with a CD or DVD instead". Click on that and follow the instructions to make a System Repair disc.
Why does it recommend NOT to use an USB stick, but instead a CD/DVD drive? I don't have a CD/DVD drive. SO my only option is an USB stick.

Updated what I could.

Thanks

Free space - you're not low enough that I worry about BSOD's from a lack of free space, so the amount of free space is your decision. You can view the contents by size using this free program: https://windirstat.info/

Leave the disabled audio thing alone for now. If you update your video drivers, then re-enable it while updating.

For the Admin Event Viewer logfile: Usually when you get the File Not Found error, there's an "OK" box to click on - and then the program finishes running and loads the log entries - then you should be able to save it.
While it's not essential for us to have this, it makes things a lot easier.

The STOP 0x116 error page. Please note on the second line that it says it's good for other errors (it used to also state that it was good for STOP 0x141 and STOP 0x142). Just skip the stuff that's particularly related to time-out errors, and the rest is just a bunch of suggestions on what to check.

System File Check errors - post over in the Windows Updates & Activation forums for assistance with them (they're even busier than we are here, so please be patient): Windows Updates & Activation - Windows 8 Forums

PSU - issues:
- remove a lot of stuff (that you can temporarily live without) and see if the system functions better (the theory here is that less power draw will result in less frequent errors).
- try another PSU. If you don't have one, then purchase one from a shop that will give you your money back if you don't need it.

Corrupt drivers are difficult to pinpoint at times. Driver Verifier is one of the tools for this (and SFC.EXE may help also).

Faulty graphics card:
- try all the video stress tests here: Hardware Diagnostics
- if all passes, the next step is to try another video card (if you're troubleshooting the faulty video card possibility)
If you don't have a video card to try, then purchase one from a shop that'll give you your money back if you don't need it.

These are the diagnostics on the hwdiag.html page:
Memory diag (bootable) I suggest a minimum of 3 passes (others suggest up to 7)
Hard Drive diag (bootable)
AntiMalware tests
Rescue disks (bootable)

Video 1 (Furmark)
Prime95
Video 2 (5 tests)
CPU Stress tests

Win8.1 will ONLY let you create a USB stick - it doesn't let you create CD/DVD disks for the recovery tool
Could you tell me where you got that quote from, as I'd like to update that page but can't recall where it's from :(

Updated what I could.
That's all we can ask for. Now we wait and see what happens.............

Found a "workaround" - had to remove one registry key. Attached log file.

Missed one part which recommended reinstalling directx from scratch. Guess that's worth a shot. But I'll leave that in my TODO list after we're done with everything else here.

I can only remove 1 hard drive and a video card. I guess power consumption of the hard drive isn't even worth considering in comparison to a video card.
I guess I could acquire a PSU if need be, but I'll leave that for when all other options are exhausted.

Faulty graphics card:
- try all the video stress tests here: Hardware Diagnostics
- if all passes, the next step is to try another video card (if you're troubleshooting the faulty video card possibility)

I've updated the Driver Verifier page -thanks for letting me know!

Lot's of disk errors (actually retries) in the Admin Event Log.
Try this first:
CHKDSK /R /F:
Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt. Please do this for each hard drive on your system.
FWIW - I know that the /F is supposed to be redundant, but I prefer to have it run anyway.
When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

CHKDSK LogFile:
Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.
Double click on the Source column header.
Scroll down the list until you find the Chkdsk entry (wininit for Win7/8/8.1) (winlogon for XP).
Copy/paste the results into your next post.

Then run a long/extended hard drive diagnostic: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
If you don't find a test for your particular hard drive, use the Seagate Seatools test
If you can't boot to a bootable disk, then try the Seagate Seatools for Windows test

Anything else besides disk retries? I'm aware of that problem. System disk and one of the storage disks are healthy. One disk however is on the verge of dying. The drive in question fails it's self test and has dead sector(s). Anyways I'm in the process of replacing it with a new one.

Moving on to the topic of diagnostics and stuff:
  • Ran Furmark - GPU temperature was a happy 73°C.
  • Ran video card memory test - passed
  • CPU stress test also passed (temperatures did not even climb above 50°C)
  • Memtest (v5.1.0) ran for 14 hours and did 4 passes with no errors (I wanted for it to run longer, but the default pass setting was 4 - didn't notice that)
  • No malware
  • Still haven't run Prime95, but I doubt it will tell us anything different.
  • Running driver verifier now, let's see what happens.

Will remove it when a new one arrives, still need it - moving things around would be a hassle (knowing that I'll have to do that again in a few days) so bear with me on this one :).

In other news I still couldn't manage to crash my system with driver verifier, although I did notice system slowdown while downloading (sounds/music slows down and "cracks"/stops, mouse movement lags etc.), is that something to worry about or is it to be expected? I'm also running prime95 now. Gonna leave it run overnight.

We'll wait until the new drive arrives.

Driver Verifier does extra stuff to the drivers in order to stress them - so slowdowns are to be expected.

We'll wait and see what the results of the diagnostics are.
Good luck!

The drive will probably arrive monday or tuesday.
Prime95 ran successfully for 20 hours.
Still no crash - it's harder than I thought it would be. Current uptime with driver verifier is 41 hours.

Turn Driver Verifier off - the likelihood of getting a crash with it isn't good at this point.
I'm more suspicious of the hard drive (which won't throw a Driver Verifier error if I'm correct).

FWIW - Driver Verifier is working to cause a driver crash. The instructions were for it to stress the 3rd party drivers.
This implies that the 3rd party drivers didn't have any significant problems - so it generally rules out a problem with the 3rd party drivers.

This leaves hardware problems and Windows problems as the likely causes.
Just FYI - here's how I do BSOD analysis':
- first I rule out 3rd party drivers (over 90% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I rule out hardware (less than 10% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I look at Windows problems (less than 1% of BSOD's are due to this - as long as Windows Updates are fully up to date).

But, unfortunately, there isn't a hard and fast separation between each cause. There are 3rd party drivers that can cause errors that look like hardware or Windows errors. And, for example, one of those is the Comodo Firewall (which it appears that you have installed). FWIW - I don't suspect the Comodo Firewall at this point, but we can't rule it out completely at this point.

Thanks a lot for all the help you've provided so far. I'd like to think that updating my BIOS and older drivers actually solved this issue. But I guess that would be too good to be true.
The biggest problem here is how unpredictable those BSODs are, it might even take a whole month until I get one again.
I guess there's nothing else to do now, but to wait for the new drive to arrive. Still I doubt it's in any way related to the drive.

That's what we do - we fix/update everything that we can, then we wait and see if the BSOD's return.
Good luck!
