Hi Folks,

Please advise if I have not done this right....

Lenovo Z580 Ideapad, I5, 8gb Ram, 1TB HD

Last week it started freezing randomly and I mean everything froze - Mousepad, keyboard and the whole shebang. Only way to resolve was a hard reset which I loathe doing.

I figured this may be a software issue but after extensive trial and error I could not pinpoint the issue. I backed everything of value up and done a system refresh but didn't help so I done a complete system reset.

It's still freezing but I now know it's not a software problem as all the software not preinstalled have be deleted.

I have done tests on the HD and the processor and they seem fine. I can't do a memory test (memtest86) as there seems to be an ongoing issues with the Z580 series whereas I cannot access the boot menu:

The novo button loads this up but when you select the boot menu option it just proceeds to boot to windows.

All drivers are up to date and all windows (8.1) files are up to date. Virus scans and malware scans have come back clear.

It's hit and miss, sometimes it will go for hours and be ok, other it will happen several time within an hour.

it's since been in for repair under the extended warranty but they returned it first as they could not replicate then after it went back it, blamed in on Utorrent (Which was installed after the first time it had been in for repair)

Since then, I removed the battery and let it run off the mains and instead of freezing I had the BSOD which seems like progress! Using the helpful tool I think I have uploaded it.

Thanks in advance for reading!

Please follow the below steps, one step at a time :-

 1. Please update the drivers highlighted in BOLD.
 2. Please follow this **GUIDE** and run the Processor Diagnostics. Let me know the result.
 3. Please run the Intel Stress Test using this **GUIDE**.
 4. Please make sure that your system is not overheating.

Please note one thing that before I could say that this is a Hardware Problem, I would be needing more of your dump files to analyze the pattern as the ZIP file contains only one Dump file. If the issues persist then please ZIP up the dump files from "C:\Windows\Minidumps" and upload them.

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

Hi Blueelvis and many thanks for taking the time to look into this for me. I will do the recommendations now but:

The system has been freezing for months but it's only ever had the BSOD when I removed the battery and run off the mains. Do you think the issue you have found would cause the freezing? Apologies i'm not that great with computers :)

Yes the freezing could occur due to the Processor Being Damaged/ Overheating (Which needs to be checked first before we could say that the Processor is damaged and some further diagnostics.

Let me know how it goes ^_^

Hi Blueelvis,

*

Thanks for the reply. I have had the Prime95 Stress test running for 10 hours, all seems fine but not really sure what I’m looking for, will check it later when back from work.

*

I’m struggling to find any of the drivers you mention to update, is this normal or am I being stupid?

*

I *have been trying to figure out if there is any other information I can give over the freezes. It’s strange. I can leave my computers for hours and it will not freeze but often, I’ll be using it then put it down to do something for a few mins and it’ll freeze then. It will never freeze when I’m actively using it though?

*

Thinking a little more the only thing I can think the freezes have in common is having a web browser open, normally Chrome.

Hi Again,

Ok, run the Prime95 test for 19 hours with no problems on any of the 4 processors. The Intel Stress Test Came back with:

So that's good? Oddly, as soon as the test finished and I came to post the results....it froze! I actually sawit this time, it was as if everything just slowed for a few seconds then just froze. Odd.

As above, Struggling with the drivers. Do you have any suggestions?

Once again, thanks for the help!

Hi Garry ^_^,

Hmm that is strange. The freezes generally occur due to the Hardware problems generally. Anyways, it could be an overheating issue as well. Could you please download this **TOOL** and then keep on monitoring the temperatures when you use your system normally?

Basically, while using Prime95, one looks for problems like BSOD's, freezes etc.

Regarding the drivers, I have provided you with the links which contain more information on them and tell you where you could find an updated version of that.

I would suggest you to reset your BIOS settings as well. Let me know how it goes ^_^

Hi Blueelvis.

Have the temperature thing running now.

How do I reset the BIOS? for give my ignorance. My Lenovo seems to have an issue where I cannot access the BIOS so not sure how to go about this?

Thanks Again,

A comment on the WHEA errors. My system has an i7 3770. I was getting WHEA errors for Processor 2 and 3, and BCC 124 BSOD's. I ran all the hardware tests I could find, including the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool (several times), memtest86, several other CPU, motherboard and memory tests run from a boot disc and nothing failed. I have a dual boot system with Win 7 64 bit and Win 8.1 64 bit (separate SSD's for each OS) and I was getting the identical problems on both Win 7 and Win 8, so I eliminated software.

I had a spare motherboard, RAM, Video and Power supply so I started changing them, one at a time and I still had the problem. I finally got down to the only thing left, the CPU. I replaced the CPU and the problem was fixed. (I have an RMA with Intel and waiting on a replacement). CPU overheating was not my problem, as it was a desktop and I have a liquid cooler. The CPU temps ran around 30 C at idle and rarely got much about 40 C.

Hi again. Run the temperature test for several hours and maximum it reached was 67c. Is this OK? If you can advise on the BIOS thing I'll try that.

Thanks again for your continued support and patience!

Hi ^_^,

Yea the system is not overheating. Although in order to determine what is at fault, I would need more dump files before coming to a conclusion.

Hi There,

I have only had the one BSOD, It's mainly the freezing issue that's affecting me, I thought they may be related but may just have been a coincidence :(

** Update **

Just realised around 80% of the freezing happens when scrolling on a web page regardless if it's Chrome (normally) or IE....?

Could you please upload a latest copy of the SF Diagnostic Tool? I would scan the logs and see if there is anything unusual there. Also, are you getting the freezes on some other activity as well?

Hi Gary ^_^,

I apologize for the late reply, it seems like I just read it and forgot to reply <_<

Please make sure that your Laptop is running on the High Performance Mode till we are troubleshooting. This can be achieved by clicking on the Battery Icon in the taskbar near the clock, clicking More Power Options and then selecting the High Performance mode.

Once this is done, please go to the BIOS settings and disable the Intel SpeedStep if there is any option. If you see an option of Power Settings based on performance set it so that the performance is High. If you are confused, you could upload the photos of the BIOS settings and I would guide you from there :)

Now, according to the Event Log, the freezes are like for 0-2 seconds. Is this the same amount of time (approx) for which the system freezes?

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

Oh yea, I forgot to point that the ZIP File contains a Dump file of 2nd September, so if you are still getting BSOD issues, I would suggest you to upload the Dump files which are located at "C:\Windows\Minidumps". Please make sure you ZIP them up before uploading. You might need to copy it to some other directory before you would be able to ZIP them up.

Hi And thanks for the reply.

it's on high performance and has been for a week or so. The freezes last basically until l i press power off. I had left for up to 20 mins and literally nothing responds (except open DVD drive!).

Will try the BIOS things and report back,

Thanks again :)
