Various BSODs relating to ntoskrnl and others while gaming

For a long time now - over a year - I've been getting seemingly random blue-screens, 90% of the time during playing video games. It doesn't ALWAYS happen, and sometimes it goes days without happening, but other times it is nearly every time I play for longer than 15 minutes.

I upgraded several months ago to Windows 8 Pro and the problem persisted. Since this all started, I upgraded my entire computer including new motherboard, CPU and RAM. Since this usually only happened during playing video games, I thought the video card was the culprit (as unlikely as that is), but after upgrading my video card, the same problem persists.

I checked the hard-disk for errors using chkdsk, WD Lifeguard - all with no errors. I ran sfc /scannow and it said it found uncorrectable errors, and after following instructions from this forum, finally got it to say it found no errors.

Basically the only thing I haven't done is reformat my system, and replace the only remaining original hardware left, my 2 HDDs and my PSU.

No help from anyone? :(

Update: I have since reformatted with Windows 8 Pro on a DIFFERENT hard-drive than what I was using before. After hours of gaming, everything was fine. Then this morning, after about 15 minutes, BSOD again... This time it was different though.

Hi Arsis & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

I apologize for the late reply. It is just that I have been having a very busy schedule and it looks like other analysts are having as well. There are not many people who do this kind of analysis so sometimes we do get overwhelmed. Patience is appreciated ^_^.

I have analyzed your dump files and below has been provided for informative purposes :-

Please follow the below steps :-

  1. Please remove Alcohol/Daemon Tools (Drivers Highlighted in RED) and then remove the SPTD which is installed on your system using this **GUIDE** as they are notorious for causing BSOD's.
  2. Please remove Malware Bytes using this **TOOL**.
  3. Please update the highlighted drivers.
  4. Please remove the NVIDIA Driver using this **TOOL** and see if you are still getting the BSOD's or not. If the BSOD's stop then please install drivers which are behind the 320.xx driver version.
  5. Please run the Memtest to check for errors using this **GUIDE**.
  6. If you are still getting the errors then please run Driver Verifier using this **GUIDE** and let it crash for atleast 4-5 times so that the fresh dump files could be analyzed.
  7. Your BIOS dates back to 2012, please check with the manufacturer if there is any update available or not.

Let me know how it goes ^_^. Also, did you change any settings in the BIOS like the RAM Voltage or CPU Multiplier?

I'll get started on this and thank you very much for the reply.

Since I have reformatted since posting my original diagnostic files, should I post a new set?

Also, no, I have not messed with any BIOS settings like that and no over/underclocking.

Sure thing let me know how it goes ^_^.

If you are still getting then please post back a freshly generated SF Diagnostic ZIP file. Post back the result of the steps as well which I asked in my previous post ^_^.

OK so it's been about a week. I reformatted my system using a new hard-drive and was getting the same kind of errors. I checked my memory's recommended timings and voltage and found one of the timings was a little off, so I updated that. After a couple hours of gaming, BSOD again.

I attached an updated diagnostic file since I reformatted my system. Most of your original recommendations don't apply now, I think, so I'll probably need an updated diagnosis.

Thanks in advance for your continued assistance.

Please follow the below steps one step at a time :-

  1. Please remove any USB Devices currently attached to the system except Mouse & Keyboard till the time we are troubleshooting. Also, it appears that you have got 3 Hard Disks connected to your system. Could you please state the model & wattage of your PSU?
  2. Check if there is any update for BIOS. Please note that flashing the BIOS is a risky process and one slight mistake would permanently damage it.
  3. One thing which you could just give it a shot is just underclock your processor, ram a bit and see if the issues still persist or not.
  4. Remove the "Citrix ICA Client USB Monitor Driver".
  5. Also, does this happen only if you play games or just plain random?
  6. Could you please start with these Hardware Diagnostics?
  7. If you are not able to locate an issue, please go ahead and perform a Hardware Stripdown using this **GUIDE**.

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

Hi - thanks for your response!

  1. I always only have keyboard and mouse plugged in, except for one-off occasions (like external HDD)
  2. I successfully updated the BIOS today. I found an update,, ran the update, then verified the BIOS showed the updated version - which it does. This BSOD has been occurring before I changed to this mobo, though.
  3. I'm not quite sure what and how to under-clock, if you can give me some quick insight on that.
  4. I removed everything from Citrix, including the mentioned driver.
  5. I remember the BSOD happening MAYBE once while not gaming. It seems to be only when gaming.
  6. I'll get started on those diagnostics, as well, and report back.

TYVM for your help!

Hi Arsis ^_^,

  1. That PSU should suffice the needs.
  2. You could underclock by lowering the CPU Frequency from the BIOS Settings.
  3. Which game are we talking about here when you crash? Is it a random game or some particular game?
  4. Let me know how those diagnostics go.
  5. If those diagnostics come clean then please run Driver Verifier according to this **GUIDE** and make sure you let it crash for few times atleast. After this, please upload a fresh copy of the SF Diagnostic ZIP File so that it could be analyzed.

The crashes occur in World of Warcraft, Blacklight: Retribution, and Assassin's Creed. It DOES NOT happen when playing Dawngate (a MOBA). Those are the only games I really play.

o_O That is strange. By the way how is Dawngate? Similar to DOTA?
Now, regarding your problem, I have edited my previous post as I forgot to add the Hyperlink to the guide.

What was the result of the steps which I asked you to perform in my previous part?

I work from home - from my computer - so I haven't had time to complete everything yet.

And I really enjoy Dawngate, it's like DOTA and League of Legends, but better IMO. The community isn't as toxic, either.

Keep me updated ^_^.

I will try DawnGate and let's see if I enjoy it or not because I am accustomed to playing DOTA 2 now since years. ^_^
