Solved BSOD when opening Skype

Alright, a bit of background here. I used to blue screen whenever I start up my laptop; could only start it through safe mode. I had a ton of errors trying to reinstall Windows, but then eventually did it. Anyway, I had no idea why I was blue screening. I was setting up everything and downloading things I wanted (after resetting Windows and deleting almost everything), when *SEEMINGLY* out of nowhere, I would blue screen. After a couple of blue screens, I noticed it was only when opening Skype. Turns out this was why I was blue screening ages ago when opening my laptop. Anyway, I want to fix this. More detail would be this: I click on Skype, blue screen with something to do with "System service exception ks.sys"

Any help would be appreciated, as I need Skype to communicate with friends and family.

Only 55 Windows Updates installed and numerous Windows Update failures in the MSINFO32 report. Most systems have 60 to 80 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Please uninstall this one:
WinRing0x64.sys Sat Jul 26 09:29:37 2008 (488B26C1)
Most likely from Fusion Tweaker - but many different programs center around the using of the WinRing libraries (RealTemp, Corsair Link2 (known BSOD issues w/Win8), Razer GameBooster, etc)
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=WinRing0x64.sys

Please update this one:
SynTP.sys Thu Oct 13 22:34:52 2011 (4E979FCC)
Synaptic Touch Pad Driver
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=SynTP.sys

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Thank you for all your help on this so far! I'm currently updating my Synaptics driver and installing windows updates. Just a question: will removing FusionTweaker from the "uninstall a program" thing also remove its driver? Or will I have to do anything else?

UPDATE: So I had to leave, and let Windows update while I was gone. I had removed the older version of Synaptics driver and wanted to restart. Windows had to update so I just left and let it update. I come back, try to install the latest version of the Synaptics driver, it doesn't work. It says "install failed." I have tried multiple times.

UPDATE #2: I have tried downloading Skype after downloading all the Windows updates and uninstalling the Synaptics driver. Still bluescreening. I've attached another zip file with the diagnostics from the SF tool.

[DEL]Fusiontweaker (WinRing) driver is still present. Try reinstalling it, then uninstalling it again.[/DEL]
Oops! Read the wrong dump! It seems that the driver isn't present in the latest memory dump.

But, I did find this bugger:
AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
NOTE: these symptoms were from the previous release of OverDrive. The new release uses the same driver name, but is dated from 4 November 2013.
Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.
Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

As for the Synaptics driver - can you try it with a "clean boot"? Here's a link on how to do it: How to perform a clean boot in Windows

While the procedure below may appear daunting, just follow it one step at a time and it'll work for you. If you have any questions, just post them in the forums and we'll be glad to provide assistance.

NOTE: If you already have the ATI drivers installed, please use the Catalyst Uninstall Manager (in Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program) to remove all of the ATI video driver components. Be careful as you may uninstall AMD chipset drivers also - which will then require reinstalling them!. Here's a link from AMD about removing graphics drivers: GPU-57: How to uninstall pre-existing graphics card drivers from a Microsoft Windows based system

NOTE: Thanks to SATROW for the link to this newly released ATI Catalyst Uninstall Utility: AMD Clean Uninstall Utility

For the driver only installation, it tells me to use the installation manager to delete everything. I have no such thing, and the link included doesn't work.

EDIT: I've downloaded this thing and I ran it to remove all of the AMD drivers.

Okay, I've tried installing the Synaptics driver in clean boot, and it still didn't work. Looked it up online and it said something about it not having a signature or whatever. Should I just keep the older version?

Anyway, for the AMD thing, it got confusing because I had both an APU and a GPU from AMD and I didn't know which to get, so I just completely removed everything AMD related from my computer and reinstalled it.

On a side note, what do any of these have to do with Skype crashing my laptop?

Thanks for your help so far!

Let's just hold with what you have and see if the BSOD's will stop.
If they don't, please zip up and upload the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump (you may have to copy it to your Desktop in order to zip it up).

The AMD instructions were written a long time ago (when I had an AMD graphics card).
I no longer have that card (or that system), so I'm unable to test the details out on more recently released graphics drivers.
I'll have a look at the instructions and will see if I can update them.

As for what this has to do with Skype - in short, it could be pretty much anything (I realize that this isn't much help!)
Troubleshooting BSOD's involves removing known trouble causing drivers.
As Skype is normally a well-behaved app, I don't suspect it right away.
Skype uses the audio and video on your system - so anything that acts with or interferes with the audio/video can be a cause.

One thing that I did forget was to ask you to uninstall/reinstall Skype. If you've already done this, there's no need to do it again.
One of your posts suggests that you may have done this already.

I wouldn't think it was Skype too, but my computer only gets a BSOD when opening Skype. That's it. Just opening Skype, or when finishing the installation of Skype. Anyhow, I tried to reinstall Skype but I still get a BSOD.

I've attached the minidump log here.

Another bump. I really need to get this fixed soon. Skype is something that I always use when I'm on my computer, it's hard to go without it.

FYI - I only come online in the morning (Eastern US time). I have Tuesday and Wednesday off - so I may be online during the day then.

It's looking more and more like a hardware issue, but we still have some 3rd party stuff to rule out.

The quickest way to fix this is:
- to reinstall Windows "clean"
- if the BSOD's continue, then we do hardware troubleshooting

The AMD Overdrive component is still involved in the memory dumps.
I don't have time to rewrite the instructions at this point - so I'd suggest that you research removing it yourself.
If you install the standard AMD drivers, the Overdrive will install.
I've tried to remove the Overdrive manually before - and the system ended up unbootable.

Update your webcam drivers to the latest, Win8.1 compatible version. Yours date from 2012 (before 8.1 came out) and the BSOD's point to streaming issues.

Beyond this, I have these 3 suggestions:
1. Get ALL available Windows Updates. It may take several trips to get them all
2. Start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
3. If all of the hardware tests pass, then run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Woah, so I looked up my webcam driver to update it, and after looking around a ton, I eventually found myself in a Skype post about someone with the same webcam as me (HP HD Webcam [Fixed]). Turns some people were BSODing when updating or launching the latest version of Skype with that webcam. I clicked a link on the Skype forums and found myself here. So apparently I have to install Skype 6.14 which is the version prior to the current version. I'll update this post when I'm done installing it.

UPDATE: Apparently it's impossible to get an older version of Skype, but I'm betting if you find a way to get it, Skype would get fixed.

Also, I'm willing to uninstall (or remove) the webcam drivers if it comes to that.

UPDATE #2: WOW, apparently it WAS the webcam driver. I disabled it and I can run and install Skype now. What should I do with the webcam driver now? I can't use it with Skype so I just disabled it, and I don't know if other versions will work, and now I can't even use my webcam. I'll try to deal with it for now, but any help would be appreciated!

If you're wondering, the product number for my HP Notebook (Pavilion g7) is A7A29UA#ABA. If you have any tips for a different driver or something, tell me, but if you don't see any fix in sight, that's fine, tell me that too.

Thank you SO much for all your time and help! I really appreciate it!

I can't find a more recent driver, and this page shows the same driver as you have as being 8.1 compatible: Drivers & software for HP ProBook 4740s Notebook PC - HP Support Center

I'd suggest leaving the webcam disabled. If you must have a webcam, then consider an external (add-on) one from one of the major manufacturer's.

PS - Keep an eye on the HP site (or use the automatic feature of HP Support Assistant) to check and see if HP releases a new driver in the future.
