Hello.

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p and it has erratic BSOD behavior, usually after sleep mode, but not always. Would love to get to the bottom of it and appreciate any help you can provide!

I've attached the necessary file as per the BSOD posting instructions.

Thanks,
Alexander

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8.1
Only 48 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 60 to 80 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available.

The memory dumps blame usbccgp.sys, but MSINFO32 lists ks.sys (kernel streaming of video driver)
And this seems to happen during a power down event (such as power off/hibernate/sleep/etc)

Finally, what applications do you delay using Startup Delayer?
What USB devices do you have connected?

I'm concerned about your version of Diskkeeper as it dates from Jan 2013 - well before Win8.1 was released.
Can you update it? If not, please uninstall it while we're troubleshooting.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

You may not find an update for this one, if so, just leave it be:
LhdX64.sys Mon Jan 11 10:06:58 2010 (4B4B3E92)
Lenovo HD Disk Driver
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=LhdX64.sys

You should be able to find an update for this one:
tap0901.sys Thu Nov 24 13:50:27 2011 (4ECE91F3)
TAP-Win32 Adapter V9 or[br]OpenVPN driver or COMODO
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=tap0901.sys

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Hi. Thanks a lot for your detailed reply. Much appreciated.

I have completed the following steps:
  1. I have updated using 'windows update' many times and am now fully caught up. Sorry about that.
  2. I was not able to find an updated driver for "LhdX64.sys Mon Jan 11 10:06:58 2010 (4B4B3E92)"
  3. I updated the "tap0901.sys Thu Nov 24 13:50:27 2011 (4ECE91F3)" driver with the latest one from OpenVPN

I checked and Diskkeeper is not installed, but a remnant .dll file still exists on this machine - perhaps this is what you saw.

The only USB device connected is my mouse.

I tried to look into the remaining older drivers but had a very hard time checking into their compatibility with Win8.1 and/or trusting that an updated driver i might have found was the correct one and decided to call it quits before I damaged the system.

I'm wondering if waiting to see if another BSOD happens is the next best strategy?

Thanks again,
Alexander

Don't worry about the LhdX64.sys driver. There haven't been any issues due to it (that I've seen), so we'll leave it alone for now.

These are the Diskkeeper drivers:
excfs.sys Tue Jan 8 11:00:53 2013 (50EC42B5)
excsd.sys Tue Jan 8 11:00:57 2013 (50EC42B9)
The easiest thing to do is to install and then uninstall Diskkeeper again to see if that removes them.
If not, then try this free uninstaller (no need to download the Pro version unless you plan on purchasing it): Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems
If the drivers still remain after using this, we'll have to manually remove them (not something I like to do).

I only asked about USB because of the memory dump that blamed usbccgp.sys (a USB driver)

What about Startup Delayer, what programs do you delay with it? I'm concerned that it may be delaying the loading of a dependency for one of the other programs that loads when the system starts.

Checking the remainder of the older drivers isn't essential at this point.
The 2 biggest concerns (IMO) are the Bluetooth drivers and the Norton/Symantec drivers
To update the Bluetooth, go to the Lenovo website and download/install the latest, Win8.1 compatible bluetooth drivers
To update the Norton, visit this site: Norton Update Center

IMO the Diskkeeper stuff is the most important to do, followed by the Startup Delayer and then the other older drivers (Bluetooth and Norton).

Hi.
I tried installing the old version of diskkeeper that I had (Diskeeper2010-ProPremier-30day), but Win8.1 didn't allow the installation to continue because it was incompatible.
I honestly do not remember trying to install it all on this machine as I had read defragging wasn't necessary with Win8.1.
Revo Uninstaller does not see it as an installed program, so I can't uninstall the drivers that way :(

I've inserted a screenshot of the Startup Delayer configuration screen which lists all the programs that are delayed or started normally, or disabled.

View attachment 48854

I've updated the bluetooth driver from the lenovo website - not sure if it's newer than what I have but hopefully!

My Norton software was already updated to the latest version according to "norton update", and "check for update" inside the program itself.

That's all I have for now. Should I run the diagnostic program again ?

- and thanks again!

Alexander

See next post before trying this.....

1) Create a Restore Point using System Restore
2) Create a Repair disc (Recovery Drive in Win8.1):
Win 8 - Press "WIN" and "R" to open the Run dialog...type "RECDISC" (without the quotes) and press ENTER
Win 8.1 - Go to the Start Screen and type in "recoverydrive" (one word, without the quotes). That will start the recovery drive process. You will need a USB drive of at least 512 mB - and all data will be erased off of it. If copying the recovery partition the drive size will be much, much larger (16 - 32 gB drive required).
3) Test the System Repair disc/Recovery Drive to make sure that you can get to the System Restore entry when you boot from the disk/drive (you may also want to try actually using System Restore to make sure that it works)
4) Download this free program (Autoruns for Windows) and use it to disable any instances of excfs.sys that are starting (or any other Diskkeeper entries) (DO NOT DELETE - only disable by removing the checkmark in the left hand column)
5) Check in Device Manager (to include showing hidden devices from the View menu item) and ensure that any instances of excfs.sys (or any other Diskkeeper entries) are "Uninstalled" (DO NOT DISABLE THESE).
6) Check in the Services applet (services.msc) to be sure any instances of excfs.sys or any other Diskkeeper entries are disabled.
7) Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename the excfs.sys driver to excfs.BAD (search the hard drive for it if it's not in C:\Windows\System32\drivers).

In the event that the system doesn't boot:

1) Boot from the System Repair disc/Recovery Drive and use the Command Prompt option to rename excfs.BAD to excfs.sys
Code:
ren C:\Windows\System32\drivers\excfs.BAD C:\Windows\System32\drivers\excfs.sys
2) Boot from the System Repair disc/Recovery Drive and use the System Restore option to restore the system to a point before the changes were made.

*************************
Then do the same thing for excsd.sys

Good luck!

The Diskkeeper drivers actually seem to belong to a program named Express Cache: https://www.condusiv.com/partners/oem/technologies/expresscache/

It's possible that this is a program that came with the computer, so you may be able to uninstall it from the Add/Remove programs applet.

Here's a link to the latest version (but it doesn't list your system as having it): ExpressCache Software for Windows 8.1 (64-bit), 8 (64-bit), 7 (64-bit) - ThinkCentre, Notebook - Lenovo Support (US)

I have no idea if any of the delayed start items may be causing problems. I'd suggest that you remove the delayed start from all of the items until we're finished troubleshooting.

Good luck!

Hi.
I had a look and I do have express cache installed and it is necessary to manage my SSD drive. It doesn't show up in Add/Remove applet, but is located at C:\Program Files\Condusiv Technologies\ExpressCache.

I'd prefer not to uninstall as then my SSD drive might fail, so instead I created a restore point and then updated to the latest version using the link you found on the Lenovo site (even though my Y510p wasn't listed).

I've also disabled all Startup Delayer items as you suggested.

I guess now we just have to wait and see or try putting the computer to sleep in different ways to see if the BSOD re-occurs?

Thanks again,
Alexander

Seriously, if you don't get one within a week, it's probably fixed
and if you don't get one within 2 weeks, it's most likely fixed

Hi. It just happened again : (
I've attached the zip file of the SF Diagnostic tool results that I ran immediately after the BSOD.
Hope something new surfaces as a result !
Thanks,

Essentially the same as the previous BSOD's.
Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
I've got other things to suggest (like DISM), but would like to have the results from Driver Verifier before trying anything else.

This is consistently pointing at USB, but refusing to give up the name of a 3rd party driver.
If Driver Verifier doesn't show us anything, we'll have to start looking at hardware or Windows as the source of the problem.

Good luck!
