BSOD - Fresh install W8 - ntkrnlmp.exe

Hi guys,

So after trying to sort my last issue out, I decided to flatten my PC, take the OS off my SSD and on to a HDD and start again.

With a brand new CPU, 16Gb Patriot RAM, currently a 500Gb HDD and 120Gb SSD and Nvidia GTX660 GPU I have once again hit the BSOD wall - ntkrnlmp.exe - as far as I can tell from the .dmp file (I didn't see the BSOD)

Specs:

GA-Z87X-UD5H - New with first CPU

Intel i7 4770k - Brand New

8Gb Patriot DDR3 1333 - New: Used to try and solve last BSOD. Replaced 2x4Gb Patriot DDR3 1333

2x4Gb Patriot DDR3 1333 - Older (replaced from the same from G.Skill)

Nvidia GTX660 2Gb

OCZ 120Gb Agility 3 SSD - Older

D: 500Gb - Old - System

I'm pretty stumped now I have to be honest! Ha. Could it have just been a fluke this time when installing the Nvidia driver? Or something more serious?

Anyways, I have attached the SF file - Any help to get to the bottom of this would be amazing thanks,

Luke

ntkrnlmp.exe is the kernel (core) of the Operating System. If it was to blame, you'd see many more problems other than just the occasional BSOD. Most often this is due to other problems that just happen to occur in the memory space owned by the kernel.

Older OCZ SSD's had BSOD issues with the firmware. Please be sure that the firmware for this drive is updated to the latest possible version.

Only 68 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Your MSINFO32 report is incomplete. Please do this:
MSINFO32:
Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).

If you're having difficulties with the format, please open an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt and type (or copy/paste) "msinfo32 /nfo %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\TEST.NFO" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then navigate to Desktop to retrieve the TEST.NFO file. If you have difficulties with making this work, please post back. Then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

Eidmax makes both USB and PCI wifi adapters. In the event that yours is USB, please read this:
I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win8/8.1 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7 and later - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win8/8.1 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

IMO this appears to be a hardware or compatibility issue (although driver issues are still possible).
Beyond this, I have these 3 suggestions:
1. Get ALL available Windows Updates. It may take several trips to get them all
2. Start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
3. If all of the hardware tests pass, then run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Finally, as with all new builds, there is the possibility of connection issues. Please unplug the system from the wall, ground yourself, and then remove and reconnect ALL connections in the system.

Good luck!

Just got this: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I can't work this out - most of the important things have been replaced now, what's going on? :p

There's basically 2 types of system crashes:
- those that are easy to fix
- those that aren't
Most BSOD topics take 2 pages of posts to be completed
Some take 4 to 6 pages (or even more).

Then, there are 3 things that cause BSOD's (this presumes a fully updated system):
- 3rd party drivers (over 90% of memory dumps are due to these)
- hardware (less than 10% are due to these)
- Windows drivers (less than 1% are due to these)

In this case, you have two significantly different BSOD's:
- a STOP 0x1A - Memory Management
- a STOP 0x24 - NTFS File System
and you've reported 2 others:
- a STOP 0x3B - System Service Exception
- a STOP 0xA - IRQL Not Less Or Equal

The theory here is that drivers tend to crash around the same times and under the same conditions - so a system with driver caused BSOD's will normally have a string of identical/similar BSOD error codes.

But, with bad hardware, it doesn't care what the drivers are doing or when they're doing it - so the BSOD error codes are more random seeming

This is just a generalization, so we have to look for other clues to help narrow things down.
Also, there are hardware problems that can mimic software problems - as there are software problems that can mimic hardware problems. In between these are also compatibility issues, so that further complicates things. This is where our experience comes in handy.

One example is the few 3rd party drivers listed in the memory dumps (in your case there were only 9). This is usually used to help confirm a hardware problem - but we're still looking at 3rd party drivers just in case.

I also suggest running Driver Verifier on systems with possible hardware problems - just in case it's software (driver) pretending that it's a hardware problem. Instructions for that are here: Driver Verifier Settings

On to specifics........

Have you updated the firmware on the SSD? If not, have you checked to be sure that you have the latest version?

Please create the MSINFO32 report that I asked for in my last post. If unable to do so, please let us know why.

Please tell us about your WiFi adapter. Is it USB or PCI? If it's USB, what other options do you have for connecting to the web (so we can see about removing the USB device temporarily for testing)

Since you've updated the system fully and it's still having BSOD's, the next step is hardware diagnostics.
Please perform all of these tests (they're free): Hardware Diagnostics

Finally, please zip up and upload the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump directory. You may have to copy it to your desktop in order to zip it up.

Thank you - And sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

I have updated the firmware for the SSD and the WiFi adapter is PCI although I do use Ethernet/Lan connection most of the time; so I could remove it if needs be.

I'm currently looking into the Hardware Diagnostics - although Im struggling to locate information on the page: I shall however continue to search and perform them. Are there any specific ones you would recommend or should I do everything I can?

I have attached the MSINFO32 files as requested (link below - exceed 2.0mb limit), along with the contents of the Minidump directory.

Many thanks
Luke

Each diagnostic section has a link to that section's tests.
Here's the tests that I suggest:
- MemTest86+
- Hard drive diagnostic from your manufacturer (not for SSD's, only for platter based hard drives). Test ALL platter based hard drives. If there's no test for your make HDD, then use SeaTools and run the Long/Extended test. If you can't run a bootable SeaTools, then run it from within Windows (a separate download)
- Antivirus scans - your choice (but the list is old, so try several)
- Prime95, run the Blend test
- Furmark
- run the other video tests to the best of your ability
- Intel CPU test

Just work the process/diagnostics page one line at a time. If you have any questions, feel free to post back with them.
While running stress tests, it's a good idea to keep an eye on the system. Most times modern equipment will force a shutdown if a problem occurs, but never hurts to monitor it while the test is running.

*************************
Here's what I got from the reports:

You have 4 hard drives. What is the age of your Power Supply? Is it the one in your profile (OCZ 650 watt)? What else do you have connected to the motherboard - both from slots/plugs on the motherboard and through the ports on the back and front of the case?

Many, many Windows Update failures. You must be sure that you are getting ALL of the updates. If the updates fail, then you'll have to troubleshoot that in another forum ( Windows Updates & Activation - Windows 8 Forums ).

Latest errors seem to be related to video, so I'd be sure to run the video diagnostics - but the one's before this show networking, so it's not a sure bet. It's still looking like hardware though, so please complete all of the diagnostics.

Update

Hi - sorry I've not had much time this last week to sort stuff out.

My PSU is the OCZ 605watt one listed yes. There nothing much is plugged in other than fans I suppose.

I have run:

HDD tests on all HDDs - no errors
Intel cpu tool - no errors/pass
(video)
Memtest G80 - no errors
memtest cl - no errors
FURMARK - no errors
Video Memory stress test - no errors direct x. no errors Open gl. Cuda module load error 300: No pass completed.
AL - 0 errors
Prime 95 - (8 workers)
Worker 1 - 1 errors, 0 warnings - 9 mins
Worker 2 - 1 errors, 0 warnings - 9 mins
Worker 3 - 1 errors, 0 warnings - 7 mins
Worker 4 - 1 errors, 0 warnings - 1 hour 38 mins
Worker 5 - 1 errors, 0 warnings - 10 mins
Worker 6 - 1 errors, 0 warnings - 8 mins
Worker 7 - 1 errors, 0 warnings - 9 mins
Worker 8 - 1 errors, 0 warnings - 9 mins
(Hardware failure detected)

I have not run:
Memtest 4.20

So I suspect that Prime 95 has found a RAM issue? Would I be correct in thinking that?
Do you want any other information from me at this time?

Many thanks,
Luke

System One

  • OS
    Window 7 64Bit / Windows 8.1 64Bit
    Computer type
    PC/Desktop
    System Manufacturer/Model
    Custom
    CPU
    Intel i7 4770K 3.5Ghz

    16Gb DDR3 1333MHz
    Graphics Card(s)
    Nvidia GTX 660
    PSU
    OCZ 650Watt
Prime95 basically tests 3 things:
- RAM
- memory controller (on the CPU with the i7 processors)
- CPU cache

The Blend test mostly tests RAM - so the RAM is suspect
The CPU test passed, so the CPU isn't likely
Running MemTest86+ will help to confirm.

Also, try Steps 6 - 9 at this link for a procedure to rule out individual sticks/slots: Memory Diagnostics

Depending on the manufacturer of the RAM, there may be a warranty on it - so check and see what their requirements are for getting a replacement.
