BSOD IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL upon install of 8.1, new build

New builder, Sorry if I messed up the dmp files, I'm new to this and will do what I need to do to fix it.

I go through the windows 8.1 installer with no hiccups until its first reboot during the installation process. It then shows "setting up devices" or something of the sort, with a percentage that travels quickly up to ALMOST 100 percent. This is when I get the BSOD IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL [0x101-0x30018]. I have tested my RAM with memtest and everything came back good after several sweeps. I have successfully ran ubuntu, and am successfully running windows 7. This is my first build so please don't leave out any stupid mistake i could have made. I will not be offended, I expect it to be a silly mistake. Here are a couple of my suspicions and possible useful information:

  • Here is a link to my build: Intel Core i5-3470, MSI Radeon R9 270X, Silverstone GD08B (Black) - System Build - PCPartPicker .
  • SSD samsung 840 EVO. I didn't try to install to my data drive, if anyone here thinks that is a useful troubleshoot, I will do it.
  • OEM copy of windows 8.1
  • I do have realtek audio, located according to device manager @ "Internal High Definition Audio Bus"
  • I am using a wireless keyboard, I am going to get a wired keyboard right now to omit this possibility.
  • I am using my TV as a display, output HDMI through MSI graphics card

Thanks in advance everyone, reddit has been very little help, judging from other threads it looks like im going to get much better feedback here!:D

Where did you get the OEM copy of Win8.1?
This looks more like a disk from another computer (such as an HP) than it does from an OEM build
Also, the drivers are significantly out of date - which would account for the BSOD's (IMO)

Are you able to get into Windows? If so, please rerun the data collection app and let it run for at least 15 minutes ( http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html Please use Option 1 as it provides Event Viewer logs )

The uploaded reports contain memory dumps from July 15 and earlier. As this is a fresh install of 8.1, they should be rather useless. But in case this is a repetitive problem, I've run them anyway.....

They blame your Intel graphics drivers (and one blames the Intel USB 3.0 drivers). If able to get into Windows, please update these immediately. Also, please run the video tests (again, if you are able) from this link: Hardware Diagnostics
FYI - I didn't find the Intel Graphics drivers in the Driver List attachment - so I wonder about that causing the problems?

If the BSOD's continue (and if you are able), also run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
Be sure that you read all of the BSOD screen (and write down the driver name if it shows - in case the system doesn't capture the memory dump).

DO NOT USE THE FOLLOWING INFO FOR TROUBLESHOOTING - they are from a different installation of Windows:

the 8.1 disc was ordered brand new from newegg, this is the exact one i purchased: Windows 8.1 64-bit | Windows Operating Systems - Newegg.com
I would be willing to bet it is my drivers (windows 8.1 setup dies at about 91% of "setting up devices"), but I have checked for updates through device manager and it finds nothing. Is checking each manufacturers site for updated drivers the only way to actually have the up to date drivers?
I am not able to get into windows 8.1, it doesn't make it through the setup after the first reboot. I am currently on the same machine in windows 7, running SF diagnostic per the instructional. I will run it again and attach at bottom, but I have done it several times and two things happen: It freezes, and the most up-to-date .dmp file it provides is the one in july.
*sorry I was messing up the diagnostic tool, didn't see the windows popping up under it asking for my ok, moved the diagnostic tool before starting, and attached is a full diagnostic .zip.
As for the intel graphics drivers, there was an optional windows update for intel graphics, which i downloaded. i personally downloaded the 3.0 drivers from intel to get all my 3.0s working. I will look into getting the most up-to-date for that. My 3.0 USB's have always acted funny, right now my front panel 3.0s aren't working, if that is relevant at all.
According to this, my MB is not 8.1 certified: ASRock > Product Certification > Windows 8, could this be it?
I am going to try the 8.1 install again with the updated HD drivers. Then I will work on those hardware and driver verifier tests. I will post the results as an edit to this post.

After taking a look at those tests, I believe you wanted me to run those if i could get into windows 8.1 correct? I can't get into windows 8.1. I can get into windows 7, everything works flawlessly (minus my front panel USB 3.0s). I don't get any BSODs in windows 7. If they are relevant I will do the tests, it looked like the video test came with a bunch of bloatware. I'm working on getting updated drivers right now for everything.
should I be downloading and installing all of these drivers for windows 7 or windows 8.1? Im guessing if I installed 8.1 drivers I might have issues with my current OS.

It looks like the FurMark people have changed their page to generate more revenue. I'll have to change my page to reflect a better link (or a different program - such as MSI Kombustor) :(

You can find the Windows setup logfiles using this link: Windows Setup Log Files and Event Logs
It may help us in determining what's failing during setup.

In most cases, installing Win8.1 should not result in a BSOD.
The most likely causes here are either defective installation media or bad hardware.
You can try another copy of the installation media to help rule that out.

As for the defective hardware, we'll have to research the system enough to see what the problem is.
For right now the chief suspects are the front USB ports and the Intel graphics.

I'd suggest disconnecting the front USB ports by disconnecting the cable from the header on the motherboard.
Then try to see if 8.1 will install
Another thing to try is to disconnect all but the essentials (see this link for suggestions: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting ) and then see if you can install Win8.1

In general, you'll only be able to install Win8.1 drivers from within 8.1 (Win7 should refuse to install them - but many installers pack both the Win7 and Win8 versions into one package).

Although the mobo isn't certified for Win8.1, that doesn't mean that it won't work (especially since it's certified for Win8).
BUT, in the long run you'll have to run all the tests and try all the things to make it work with 8.1

Just for example, I had a laptop that wouldn't work well with Win8 - I spend weeks and weeks messing with it, and even took it to Microsoft with me to ask people there. After that trip I finally gave up and decided that the system just wasn't compatible w/Win8

Good luck!

I hope it isn't my copy of windows, I wouldn't know how to go about getting a legitimate copy replacement. I can figure that one out though. I believe I can also turn off the integrated graphics through my BIOS and just go off my GPU. I work a busy week monday through friday, so I likely will not get a chance to open up my case and troubleshoot from the inside until friday night or saturday. I believe I will try to install with just the essentials. I figure in a custom build there are components in my machine that may be out of the norm, specifically my HTPC case with the front panel USB.

Honestly, I mostly just want windows 8.1 because I already bought the disc. Maybe I need to look into why I actually want 8.1 more in depth, see if the pros are even very applicable to me.

Ill be posting with the results as soon as I get a chance. Ill start off with the logs, then move to disconnecting hardware, then to another copy of 8.1, if i haven't given up by then. thank you for the replies, this site really is an awesome resource.
