Solved BSOD after changing settings in Wifi card

Hello,

I am an owner of the Lenovo y510p laptop. It is notorious for having a internet connectivity problems with its intel n 2230 wireless card. In my case the internet connection would drop every minute at its worst and every 6 hours at its best. I have looked for solutions to this issue and as possible result I am in the current predicament. Here are the most likely culprits:

1) I have installed Wireless_17.0.5_De164 from https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23994
2) I have uninstalled Intel Management Engine Interface from the Device Manager as suggested in this forum https://communities.intel.com/thread/38676?start=225&tstart=0

At this point I have received BSOD, driver_corrupted_expool. I rebooted the computer and it was working fine and and then when I tried further changing options in my wifi card I would get BSOD, but then the system would not boot without getting BSOD. I panicked, and have re-installed windows while keeping all the files. Following the re-installation of windows the BSOD problem still occurs and is consistently occurring when I try changing Advanced settings of my wifi card from the Device Manager window. Furthermore, I have got BSOD on other occasions 1) Freshly after rebooting when I opened Firefox. 2) While making a call on skype. I have received several errors including bad_pool_header.

Hope that helps, I have attached my diagnostics.

Thanks so much in advance,
dobryjr

Hi Dobryjr & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

I have analyzed your dump files and below has been provided an analysis of that :-

As we can see from the dump files, the last one is Pool Corruption, before that is the Direct X (dxgmmsl.sys) being blamed and the rest are the "nwifi.sys" (Wireless Networking Related driver). But, since these are Windows components, chance of them being the root cause is extremely low. Below is a list of 3rd party drivers present on your system :-

I have highlighted some drivers above. Please follow the below steps one by one and once each step is done, check if BSOD's are occurring or not :-

  1. It appears that the Ethernet Drivers from Qualcomm Atheros are old (Dating to year 2012) and hence may not be compatible with Windows 8.1. Please update them.
  2. Open up the Device Manager. Under the Network Adapters dropdown, select your Wireless Adapter (Intel one in this case), right click on it and click on Uninstall. Once the Uninstallation process is complete, restart the system and let Windows install the Generic drivers and see if the BSOD's are still happening or not.
  3. In the same manner uninstall the Ethernet Network adapter's drivers and restart and check for BSOD's.
  4. Update the rest of the drivers and check your OEM as well.

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

Thank you for such quick response. I am currently running Windows 8.0 as it is more compatible with my computer. 1) Windows has determined that the driver is up to date for my Ethernet 2) I got a BSOD in the middle of uninstalling. It uninstalled successfully on the second try. The internet is working so far and I can change settings without BSOD occurring. The main problem is fixed -- Thank you. 3) Should I still uninstall the ethernet network drivers? 4) Can you expand on what you mean by check the OEM? Thank you so much for the help. dobryjr

If the BSOD's have stopped then no need to follow the rest of the steps. Don't fix it if you don't have problems :p.

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer which in your case is LENOVO but now it is not necessary. So, your Internet Connection is running stable as well, right? No frequent disconnections as well?

Glad to see that it worked ^_^. Could you please mark this thread as solved?
