Repeating BSOD DPC Watchdog Violation

Hi guys,

I've been struggling with this error with my computer since I got it last September. Honestly, I probably should have returned it then and there, but I kept going with it, thinking it would go away (I know, smart move).

Anyways, my computer crashes on random occasions, I can't really see any cause. It's happened while surfing the web to as soon as I turn on my computer to sometimes when my computer is off (I'm not sure of this one, but randomly I see my computer booting up when I knew I put it to sleep).

The only message I get from the BSOD is "DPC Watchdog Violation." The responses on the internet to this problem are varied, and I have tried a lot of them with little to no success.

I have very little experience with memory dumps, but these seem to be the only way I haven't diagnosed my problems, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I've attached what I found. Tell me if it's not right.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help. I can't say how much this problem has frustrated me.

Hi Rneogy & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

Unfortunately, there are no dump files to be analyzed inside that folder which you have attached. Please re run the tool and make sure you let it run for atleast 15 minutes or till it says that it has finished it's job.

You could also zip up the Dump files by going to "C:\Windows\Minidump". Copy all the dump files, paste them on Desktop and then zip them up (Sometimes, there is permission error if you directly zip up the Dump files from the main directory).

Furthermore, make sure that the generation of Dump files has been enabled. If you are not sure then follow this guide :-
How to configure Windows to create MiniDump files on BSOD

Attach the dump files with your next post :)

Hi BlueElvis,

Thanks for your response!

I have looked in the minidump folder and there are no files there. I've attached my dump settings so you can make sure they're fine, but I'm pretty sure they're all right.

One of the problems may be that when my computer crashes, the auto-reboot doesn't even work. The BSOD appears, and then it says something along the lines of: "We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you." But the counter stays at 0%, it never restarts automatically, and I have to hold the power button to make force it to power off. Maybe because it freezes, it never even has the chance to save dump files?

I really don't know what else to do. If there's anything else you need to see, go for it and ask.

Thanks,
Rneogy

Hi!

I have 6 GB of RAM on my computer (5.88 GB usable). My hard drive is 500 GB (451 GB usable), of which 334 GB is free. So plenty of space for a dump file of all my RAM (I'm guessing that's why you're asking).

As for the "Manage System Page File" checkbox, I didn't find anything exactly named that. I have "Automatically manage paging file size for all drivers." I've attached a screenshot of the settings that I think you're asking for.

Thanks,
Rneogy

It is pretty strange why the dump files are not being generated. You have the correct settings but it is really hard to pin point the cause here. I checked your Event Viewer logs and below is the information that I was able to dig up:-

The dump files which are sent to Microsoft are in the following folder :-
"C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG\WD-20140617-2100.dmp"

If you are able to get to these Dump files, please attach them with your next post. If not then try checking this folder :-
"C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\"

Furthermore, there are many errors regarding the Intel Rapid Storage. Please goto Dell's support site and then download and install the latest version from there. Also, your MCAFEE is very old. If the BSOD's still continue, please remove it using this **TOOL**.

Please check if there's a C:\Windows\MEMORY.dmp file - If so, please upload it to a file hosting service and post a link to it in the thread.

Then:
Start with hardware diagnostics - to see if it's hardware
Run Startup Repair (at least 3 times w/reboots in-between) - note any errors that may come up
You may want to experiment with the bootrec and bcdedit commands (I'm not real familiar with them)
Run the DISM commands: DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8

If the problem is still not fixed then please proceed further.

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

I attached the dump file found in the first folder, but I don't even have a "programdata" folder on C. But at least I finally found some dump file! That's exciting haha.

I am tried installing the newest Intel Rapid Storage driver, though I have done this before. I got a warning saying that my version of the driver is newer than the one on the website (I keep it updated with a drivers tool). Should I continue to "downgrade" to the one on the Dell website? Or should I keep my newer version?

I have gotten rid of McAfee, though I don't believe I was ever using it. I mainly just used Windows defender.

I will try startup repair now, and edit this thread when I'm done.

EDIT: I performed startup repair, and it found no errors. I say this because I began the process, it said it could take over an hour, I left the room, came back 10 minutes later, and it was on the startup screen. So I'm assuming it found no errors and worked fine.

Hi Rneogy ^_^,

Yea atleast we got a dump file. I actually forgot that you would need to enable the View Hidden Files & Folders in Windows to view the ProgramData folder in the C: drive as it is a hidden folder. Also, if the problem still persists, I would be needing the latest WatchDog Dump file as this one is more than a month old. You could go to the directory ""C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG\" and see if there are any more dump files. If no dump files then check the "LiveKernelReports" directory and if still no luck then goto the ProgramData Folder suggested above.

Below has been provided an analysis of the Dump file which was available :-

Please follow the below steps :-

  1. Remove your Intel Graphics Driver by going to the Add/Remove and removing the Intel Graphics driver. Once removed, restart the system and see if you are still getting the BSOD's or not. If the BSOD's stop then go to Dell's website and download the latest driver for Intel Graphics from your system's support page.
  2. Please remove Cyberlink
  3. Remove the Airplane Mode Switch From Dell.
  4. Update Realtek USB Mass Storage Driver from the OEM.

Let me know how this goes ^_^.

Well I was a little nervous about removing my graphics driver, but I went ahead and did it. Upon restart my screen brightness refused to change from max brightness for 5 or so minutes, and then the computer did something and it automatically changed the brightness to my regular level, and I can change it now. I don't really know what that all meant, but that's what happened. I'm curious, if you know, what driver is my graphics card using now?

I removed all of my Cyberlink programs, though I'm wondering, why? They're mostly utilities that came with the computer, and I most commonly used the PowerDVD program to watch DVDs. I also have VLC player though, so it shouldn't matter.

As for the USB Mass Storage driver, I can't seem to figure out how to do this. Also, what did you mean update to the newest driver from the OEM? I'm a little confused on this one.

On the bright side, my computer hasn't crashed in the past 2 days. This might be a good sign, or it might just be good luck. The crashing really never had a pattern. I once went a week without a crash, only to have it return randomly.

Thanks!
Rneogy

Hi ^_^,

Your system is now using a generic driver from Microsoft which it automatically enables if there is no other driver for some device and it will try to find a generic device driver using Windows Update as well. It may take some time to find and install it and hence it caused delay in changing the brightness setting.

I asked you to remove the Cyberlink Program because the driver it is using is very old. So, I just want to make sure that it is not causing any problems. Once the system has stabilized you could re-install it.

Regarding the USB Storage drivers, you need to goto your OEM's support page and download the latest drivers for that and then install them.

At this point, I would need you to test your system further and make sure it is not giving Blue Screens.

Also, were you able to find any further dump files as asked in my previous post?

Looking forward to your update :)

Hi!

I'm happy to report that my computer hasn't crashed in 3 days now. This may just be luck, but let's hope it's not.

Might as well continue with updates. When you say OEM, would that for me be Dell? Or Realtek? I'm a little confused on what OEM refers to.

As for the dump files, I haven't seen any new ones. I checked ProgramData, but the ReportArchive folder is just full of other folders which each contain a .wer file. However, none seem to contain dump files. Do you need any of the .wer files?

Thanks!

Keep on testing it ^_^.

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer which in your case would be DELL. If no updates are present on Dell's Support page then try Realtek.
In case of further problems, I would be needing the WER report from the latest incident although first test your system extensively :)

Once you are sure, we would be installing the latest Intel Graphics Driver :)

Bad news. Computer crashed. While using the web. At a seemingly random time. BSOD was frozen too. Ergo, no new dump file. Woo.

Sooooooo I guess back to figuring out what to do. I still haven't figured out how to update the Realtek USB Mass Storage Driver. I've attached a screenshot from device manager of what I think you're talking about. How do I find an update to this driver? I've tried right clicking and updating the driver, but it didn't find anything.

Also, which airplane mode switch do you want me to get rid of? There are two. I've uploaded another screenshot for that.

Thanks,

Yeps, that is the Realtek Device. You could try by right clicking it and then clicking Update Software and then searching the internet. You could also try going to Dell's website and then checking there if there is any update to it or not.

Did you try the Hard Drive Dignostics? Also try the RAM Diagnostics by following this guide over here :-
RAM - Test with Memtest86+ - Windows 7 Help Forums

Did you try using the Driver Verifier and see if it generates the Dump files or not? Do one thing, search your computer for this string :- "*.dmp" in your system and see what results it comes up with?

The online search for the Realtek didn't find any update, and there doesn't seem to be any update available on Dell's website.

How do you do Hard Drive Diagnostics? As for the RAM diagnostics, it mentions removing sticks of RAM at some point, and I'm on a laptop, so I'm unsure as to how feasible that is.

I searched through my computer for *.dmp, and I found several dump files, though none of them date from today's crash. I've attached a screenshot which shows their location, name, and date. The second one is the Watchdog one I previously sent you.

Could you explain how to use Driver Verifier to see if dump files are produced? I'm don't really know how to go about this.

Thanks!

Hi,

Sorry forgot to add the link for Driver Verifier. Here it is :-
Using Driver Verifier to identify issues with Drivers - Windows 7 Help Forums

Follow the instructions very carefully. Could you please remove PC Doctor and see if the crashes continue to occur in Chrome only? Does IE work as usual? As for the RAM Diagnostics, first run the test and see if there are any errors or not. The removal of the sticks is that part when we find ERRORS so we need to make sure if there are any errors on the RAM or not.

Regarding the Hard Disk Diagnostics, follow this :-
Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

In your next post, I would want you to upload your latest Event Viewer Logs and instructions on how to do that are below :-
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Sorry for the late reply. Got busy for a few days and didn't get back to troubleshooting.

I installed the Realtek driver. I also tried saving the Administrative Events, but that gives me an error message. I've uploaded a picture of it.

Oh I forgot to mention, this crash doesn't only happen when I'm surfing the web. I don't know if that matters, just letting you know since you were asking about if it crashed when using Chrome. The computer has crashed while watching videos from my hard drive, playing games, and even right after it wakes up from sleep.

If there's anything else I need to do, feel free to tell me.

Thanks!
Rneogy

EDIT: Oh I also tried some Hard Drive Diagnostics. I used SeaTools for Windows and ran the SMART Test, the Short Drive Self Test, the Short Generic Test. The Hard Drive passed both tests. I can run the longer ones if necessary, but apparently the short ones should tell quickly if there are major problems.

The short test only spot checks the drive, the long test will fully test the drive. I haev had hard drives pass the short test (we run that when the customer first comes in) and then I've had to chase them out into the parking lot because the long test failed as soon as we started it.

Usually when you get the Event Viewer error that you've posted, if you click OK you can then work with the snap-in
Sometimes there'll be another error after that one, but when you're through the error messages Event Viewer will work OK.
