    8.1 Blue Screens, Minidumps included

    Hey folks,

I've recently been having a number of issues after upgrading to Windows 8.1. I've formatted my drive and reinstalled 8.1 twice now and still have similar issues. Most of the time I'll wake up and my computer will have restarted overnight, but every now and then it will restart while I'm using it.

At first I thought it might be an issue with my memory modules, so I swapped the 3*2gb modules I used for ones I knew were good. The issues still persist. At this point I think it's a driver issue. This computer is 6-7 years old but other than these blue screens runs fine. I have no issues running Linux distributions, which reinforces my feeling that it's not a hardware issue.

I'm really not sure. I uploaded the 5 minidumps generated from the 5 crashes since I last reinstalled 8.1 If any of you can take a look at these and make sense of the issue, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

Do your still need help with this problem?

    Windows 8.1

Hey John, thanks for the response

I posted this same thread elsewhere and some were able to deduce that it was an issue with outdated nvidia drivers Windows Update insisted were the latest, when in fact they were quite a few versions outdated. I've now updated them and have had no issues thus far.

I'll mark this as solved for now. If anyone's having similar issues, take a look at the thread here.

    Thanks again

    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!

    Thanks for letting us know!

FWIW - Windows Update only has drivers that were submitted to them. In most cases nVidia and AMD/ATI don't submit them, but the PC/OEM manufacturer's do (but don't do it very often).

I always recommend getting the drivers from nVidia or AMD/ATI - unless you have a laptop, then the drivers at the PC/OEM manufacturer's website are usually the best.

The nForce chipset (nForce 430) is getting old, make sure that you have the latest drivers for it also (you may have to install them in compatibility mode). Some systems will work OK w/Win8 or 8.1 - others will continue to have problems.

Another thing to look at is the age of the BIOS. BIOS' from 2008/2009 usually have compatibility problems withe Win8/8.1
2010 and 2011 can also have problems. Make sure that you get the latest version available for your motherboard.

    Good luck!
