Frequent Random Crashes

About 1-2 weeks ago I had frequent BSOD's at startup, "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (iaStorA.sys)". As of the last week I haven't gotten a single one again.

Instead I am now getting freezes/crashes and I'm not sure what to do as as far as I know these crashes don't leave much information behind. The crashes are just that the mouse becomes unresponsive and any sound that was playing just repeats on loop. I have only gotten two BSOD's since the original issue was fixed and the most recent one today, was related to "
ntoskrnl.exe". The BSOD said that Driver Verifier found an exception however I'm pretty sure driver verifier has been off for some time (checked verifier /query and verifier /reset just to be sure).

Also, sometimes on startup before the logon screen, the computer will either freeze while on the windows logo or my monitor would go black. The monitor light would flash meaning there was no signal between the computer and monitor (i think).

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the response,

I hadn't heard of "EgisTec Inc. Fingerprint Biometrics" or Avermedia before so I assume it came with the PC years ago, would prefer to uninstall them rather than update it if that's fine?

Could these be related to the computer freezes too? As I'm still getting them during computer startup (some before logon and some after) and they don't make any dump files.

I assume that the Egis Biometrics is purely software, so uninstall it will do.

Your aVermedia device is probably the AVermedia Tv tuner and i think this is probably a inserted PCI card.
I would not only uninstall the drivers/software but als physically remove the device from your PC.

The TVtuner might be related, because it is part of your hardware layer.

Okay, I'm still having problems. I crashed about 5 times in a row this morning:

1. Just logged on, minutes later, everything freezes (monitor still on).
2. Immediately after turning on the computer again, no monitor signal. This surely means I have at least one hardware problem right? From what I know nothing is loading on the computer that early.
3. Got the "Acer" screen then it freezes (keyboard turns off).
4. Logged into windows, freezes (monitor still on).
5. Got a BSOD as I was writing this post (first BSOD in 5 days).

Looks like I'm getting three types of problems, freezes, no signal to monitor/keyboard off, and BSOD (rare).

Thanks for the help again.

Okay, sorry I thought I had updated the drivers, I'm sure I updated a lot of drivers except EgisTec by the time this BSOD happened (dumpfile attached). I don't seem to have any software relating to it in the control panel to uninstall it and I can't find where to get driver updates for it on their website. :(

I think "Bioexcess"

BioExcess - Security with Biometric Features - Software - EgisTec Inc.

is the fingerprint software? Should I download the free trial in the hopes that this updates any drivers? (Still don't understand why this desktop came with this software unless I mistakenly installed it..)

I ran Memtest86:

Edit: Just got a new BSOD "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" but was stuck at 0% collecting information, didn't produce a dump file.. next startup monitor when on black and then on the next startup I got something I had never seen before:

CMOS Checksum error? I did a bit of quick research and found people experiencing the same problem of the monitor going black but the computer still on etc. and they mentioned the battery on the motherboard?

My apologies for butting in here, but I received a PM request from Aftershockjr asking me to help out.

Replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard.
Then see if the CMOS Checksum error goes away.
Ensure that you reset the Date/Time in the BIOS after messing with the battery.

The "Verifier Enabled" memory dump may not be due to verifier. This particular error (STOP 0xC4) occurs without verifier being enabled.

I'd suggest that you run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
It may show different results from the previous verifier enabled memory dumps.

Your BIOS dates from 2010. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

The latest version of the BIOS appears to be:
P01.A4
3.6 dated
2011/05/16

Please note that Acer does not offer drivers for Win8 for this system. As such I have to wonder if it's compatible w/Win8. We'll continue to suggest things to fix - but it's up to you to decide if it just isn't compatible w/Win8 (due to repeated, unfixable problems). The solution for this is to either downgrade to Win7, or to buy a new system (or at least buy Win8 compatible parts).

There is no EgisTec Inc. Fingerprint Biometrics device that comes with the computer, nor is there software for it.
As such, I'd suggest uninstalling the EgisTech/BioExcess stuff
Check in Device Manager after uninstalling it (and rebooting) to make sure that there aren't any problem devices. If there are, please let us know what they are.

Uninstall the TV Tuner software and then physically remove the Tuner from your system. If needed, feel free to try it again AFTER the system has been stabilized.

The point here (IMO) is to stop the BSOD's. Once that's done, then we can work on the other problems (freezing/black screen).

Lot's to suggest for those problems - but let's wait and see what Driver Verifier tells us first.

Thank you very much for the quick response!

The CMOS checksum error occurred only once, should I still replace the battery? At first I thought/hoped it was what was causing the freeze/monitor black screen but then I found out it only holds the time on the computer. As the computer is not losing its time and I'm not getting the error, should I still fiddle around with it?

I wouldn't mind downgrading to Windows 7 if the problem persists so I'll keep that in mind. What confuses me is that I've had windows 8 for 7-9 months or so and the computer for a couple of years and never had any problems yet I'm suddenly getting BSOD's, freezes and blackscreens in the last month (it may have all started with Intel RST and the iaStorA.sys BSOD which stopped weeks ago after uninstalling/reinstalling Intel RST).

Edit: Oops, I had meant to say that the BIOS updates don't mention my problems*

As when lifetec also suggested uninstalling the Aver/EgisTec and removing the card, I don't have any software installed (from the control panel, right?). In device manager I do see "AVerMedia H751 Hybrid Analog/DVB-T" under "Sound, video and game controllers" so I'm assuming uninstalling this should also get rid of the AVer7231_x64.sys file? How can I remove the Egistec system files though if I can't find any installed software or drivers?

I finally have time this weekend to open up the computer and remove the Aver TV Tuner card, does it just have to be disconnected from the motherboard and that's it? Thanks again lifetec and usasma.

Your choice on the CMOS checksum error and the battery.
It does not "only" hold the time on the computer (but that's all that most people use it for)
In the XP/Vista/maybe Win7 days the BIOS would stay at the date it was set.

Starting in Win 8 (maybe in Win7) the BIOS was being updated by Windows - so you'd see the time changing if you set it wrong. This depends on the capabilities of your motherboard and it's BIOS (and it's ability to communicate w/Win8)

In and amongst all of this, UEFI debuted and that just made things more complicated :0)

If this is an incompatibility, the incompatibility has been there from the start. Most likely it's just that the incompatibility was able to work with Windows until an update came out that exposed it's problem.

As for Aver/EgisTech stuff - remove the card from the motherboard, then go to Device Manager and see if it's still there. If so, right click on it and select "uninstall" Then reboot and see if it comes back.

Post the results here and we'll see what to do next (?maybe manually remove the drivers after the next BSOD - if it still shows them).

Okay, I uninstalled the Aver driver through device manager and removed the card. Device manager doesn't show it anymore. Upon turning on the computer again I got a couple freezes/black screens but no BSOD's (though they were rare to begin with so I won't know for a while). One thing I noticed is that I still have the "AVer7231_x64.sys" in system32/drivers despite uninstalling the driver?

In general, uninstalling the device in Device Manager won't remove the driver unless you're offered the option (it's a checkmark) to "Delete the driver software for this device"

We can remove the driver manually (if needed) - but I'd prefer to see if it's showing up in the memory dumps first.

I finally got a BSOD again, and like usual it is different from the last. Also I'm almost certain that I had seen that box and checked it :(

Attached is the memory dump.

Please remove MyWinLocker (another program by EgisTec - this was an omission in the Driver Reference Table that I've just now fixed). It's drivers date from 2009.

Please note that the Aver drivers aren't in this memory dump. That means (most likely) that the one's left in the folder aren't loading.

Previously I had asked you to run Driver Verifier - have you done that?
If not, please do so if the BSOD's return AFTER removing MyWinLocker

FWIW - if this should turn out to be a hardware problem, it may require that you update your BIOS in order to achieve a fix.
I'd suggest preparing for this by backing up your stuff (in case the BIOS flash goes bad) - not likely, but it's better to be safe than sorry! :0)

I don't have that program listed on control panel either. If I uninstalled them in the past, shouldn't that remove the installation from program files and the drivers? :( I ran driver verifier when you suggested it but I kept getting BSOD's with 0% "collecting information" (no dumps were made), I will try driver verifier again once I figure out how to remove all this EgisTec stuff. That's okay, I will update the BIOS if I need to. I also just got a BSOD so the file is attached.

Thanks

The EgisTech\MyWinLocker stuff is listed in the Software Environment...Program Groups section of the MSINFO32 report.
Try using the free version of Revo Uninstaller: Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs easily, Forced Uninstall, Leftovers Uninstaller
If that doesn't work, then try installing a new copy, then uninstalling it.
Finally, if all of that doesn't work, then post back and we'll see if we can manually remove it (a long nasty process that isn't guaranteed to work)

Looking at the raw stack text, there are traces of nVidia video drivers there.
Please:
- download a fresh copy of the latest, Win8 compatible video drivers from the nVidia website ( Visual Computing Leadership from NVIDIA )
- uninstall the current video drivers
- install the freshly downloaded video drivers
- monitor for further BSODs

I'd like to say thank you for showing me that uninstaller program as it helped get rid of a couple other things that I struggled with a lot to remove (Bluestacks and DivX ). Anyways, I removed everything relating to EgisTec through the uninstaller and it did delete the program files however I can see that the system files are still there (after restarting). I'm hoping that this is a similar case to the Aver sys. file where it is still there but not being loaded. I also uninstalled and re installed the new graphics driver.

Additionally I've been having almost no problems with the computer blacking out now. From before it took me 3-6 times to use the computer once each day but in the last week I only remember one time where I had to restart due to the screen turning off. :)

Edit: Jinxed myself and got a black screen today

It's not uncommon to get black screens after "fixing" BSOD's. I believe that it's that we've found the primary cause of the BSOD, but did not find all of the problems.

Wait for a while to see if the BSOD's are fixed (a week or two),
Then post back and we'll work on the black screens (if still needed)
FWIW - they're much harder.

While you're waiting, try this stuff:
Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after each one:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

FYI - I have repaired systems using the last command even though problems weren't found with the first 2 - so I suggest running them all.

From this article: Repair a Windows Image

You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

Hi again,

One week after my last post, until now, the problem had gone away completely. For the last month and a half I had been using the computer about 1-2 hours a day at most, until a few days ago where I began my semester break. Yesterday, one of the problems seemed to have come back (screen loses signal/turns off, keyboard turns off, computer still "on") and today the same but with a freeze on the start screen.

I'm sure it's not a temperature thing due to an increased usage of the computer because it happens within 10 minutes of startup like it always has only. I have no idea what changed with the computer to cause this to start again as I'm almost certain I didn't change anything

Thanks
