BSOD randomly with unidentified driver

System Win 8.1 Pro 64
P5W DH Deluxe BIOS 3002 with Q9650 3ghz quad. 8GB mem. nVidia Eng450 GTS, Creative X-Fi platinum sound card, TP Link 450N dual band Wifi adapter

I have been having continual BSOD at the rate of 1 or 2 a day since I installed Windows 8.1 on the 9-Apr-2014.

The errors are not consistent and so at first I suspected memory.

I have run every memory test including memtest86 for several hours at a time but could not find any problem. Regardless I bought and replaced all my memory with new. I am currently running my DDR2-1066mhz (5-5-5-15) memory at 875mhz (5-6-6-18) so well underclocked.

I have replaced my CPU! The graphics card is new NVidia ENG 450GTS and I found having the NVIDIA HD Audio drivers enabled would cause many BSODs even though I didn't use that functionality. They are now disabled.

I was getting a lot of internet download errors and so I replaced an incorrectly recognized WIFI driver (detected as Atheros) for the correct TP link driver.

I let DriverVerifier run for over a day with no errors detected.

I let Windows 8 memory test tool run with no errors.

I have looked at the minidumps but I'm not expert enough to determine the cause.

Just when I think I've found the problem and resolved the issue BOOM another BSOD.

I have no antivirus software except defender!

I would appreciate any help identifying my Win 8 issue.

I have run SFDiagTool and the output can be found at:

Furthermore, please update the ATK (Driver highlighted in RED) from ASUS website to make sure it is not causing the problems as in many cases it is a repeating offender for BSOD's. Please update the rest of the drivers as well as there is no specific cause in the Dump files and furthermore, please update the Creative drivers as in many cases they have been the culprit as well.

Let me know how it goes :)

Thanks BLUEELVIS for your response.

As requested I have made the suggested changes. One at a time and continued testing.

Creative drivers are already the latest.
nVidia drivers are already the latest.

First change : I have updated the ATK driver with the latest from the ASUS site.

BSODs still occurring.

Second Change: I have changed my BIOS performance profile from 5% to stock speed (333mhz/1333FSB/3.0GHZ CPU speed).

BSODs still occurring.

So problem still occurring

Do you have enough information to continue or should I perform another SFDiag and upload the new dump files?

Much appreciated

WallyZ

You have got extremely old drivers for your "Conexant SoftK56 Modem". You need to remove these drivers and try if removing the Modem fixes the problem? Furthermore, you got the "Realtek" product for Networking which has got pretty old drivers as well alongwith "Marvell Yukon Ethernet Controller". You need to update drivers and if it still doesn't solve the problem then try removing each Network Interface and see if the problem gets solved or not.

Furthermore, which Creative Product are you using?

The Softmodem is disabled in the device manager. I would uninstall this but it cannot be disabled in the BIOS so gets re-installed on every boot.

I can also disable the realtec Ethernet drivers because I'm not using it.

I have also disabled the NVstreaming service as this has some known issues and I don't use it.

The sound card is a Create X-Fi platinum (PCI card).

Creative Worldwide Support > X-Fi Platinum

The last minidump indicates the error occurred in ctoss2k.sys so I suspect the Creative drivers (they are the latest and only drivers that support Win 8.1) the previous driver was released 2011 does not support Win 8. However this error could be a once-off so i am waiting for another BSOD to confirm.

Thanks for your efforts

Are you using the SoftModem by chance? What you can try is that, once you boot up and the driver for the SoftModem gets installed, goto Device Manager and then UNINSTALL the device completely and and do not restart your system. See if you are able to produce the BSOD. This could confirm whether the drivers are causing it or not.

Furthermore, you could try plugging out your Sound Card and see if your system is stable or not. Also, check if your BIOS has got any updates from the Manufacturer (Do not PERFORM THE UPDATE, just check).

In case of further BSOD, please upload the latest SF Diagnostic File ^_^. Awaiting your response.

I have had numerous more crashes, however only the last two are with a NON overclocked CPU.

Several other crashes did not produce a minidump (black screen of death / reboot) so it took a while to get a few more crashes.

The latest sfdiag zip can be found at:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=404A6EBA34A92108%21380

I will now uninstall the softmodem and continue monitoring.

The drivers I have installed for the X-fi platinum sound card are the latest and only version supported on Win 8.1

I will remove the card if I continue to get BSOD with the softmodem driver uninstalled.

Thank you for your support.

The last BIOS update was 2010 version 3002. This is what I am currently running.

Hi WallyZ,
I have analyzed your dump files and I don't think that I could point the finger there at someone. Below is a list of 3rd party drivers which were present on your system :-

Remove your Creative Card/Headset from the PC. Remove the ASUS Bloatware from the PC.
If you are still facing problems, then my suggestion would be to downgrade to Windows 7 as according to you the BSOD's started just after you upgraded. I'll quote myself here :-
Some people had problems with updating to Windows 8.1 due to requirements of new drivers and all. Furthermore, since you have an old BIOS dating back to 2010 it could mean that there is incompatibility.

But, there is another side of the coin as well since there have been people who are running an old BIOS and all and no support for Windows 8.1 as well but running smooth as butter. I am in that category. My Toshiba dates back to 2011 and it is running absolutely fine with Windows 8.1 even though I have old BIOS.

Let me know what you decide since Driver Verifier also did not find any violation and no errors in the RAM test as well. But, before doing that follow this Hardware Stripdown guide and see if you are still getting the BSOD's or not :-
Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting

Let me know how it goes ^_^.
