SCHANNEL Error 36888

I have been seeing several SChannel Error 36888 in my system event viewer so I decided to try an experiment. I cleared the System Event log and went to the Windows Store and installed a new program. Once the new program was installed, I checked the System Event log and there were 8 new SChannel Event ID: 36888 errors there. Anybody have any idea why I am getting those errors? Is there anything I can do to correct the problem?

Here is the text of the error:

"A fatal alert was generated and sent to the remote endpoint. This may result in termination of the connection. The TLS protocol defined fatal error code is 70. The Windows SChannel error state is 105."

Any help or enlightenment is appreciated.

Thanks
Walt

Seems to be related to outlook read here Schannel Error 36888 - Microsoft Answers

That might be true in some cases. But in my case, here is what I just tried. I uninstalled Office 2010 from this test machine. I restarted the machine. I cleared the System Event log. Next, I went to the Windows Store and installed a new program. Once the new program was installed I looked in the System Event log and there were 6 NEW SCnannel errors of Event ID:36888 just like my original post. So in my case your theory is not true. That link you refered to was from a Windows 7 Forum not a Windows 8 forum.

Thanks for your concern.

It was closest I could find on short notice.

I would search for it on MS Answers and Technet.

I'm not sure I would get any help from those places since my problem is occurring on a Windows 8 machine and Windows 8 is not released. That is why I asked in a Windows 8 forum. I thought maybe someone else may have this problem while using Windows 8. It isn't a big deal since it doesn't appear to hurt anything. I just hate seeing errors in the event log. :)

I get that same error and found that it is associated with TLS protocol which is used for HTTPS encryption and Error code 70 means it was a bad protocol and the connection was probably terminated. I have not been able to see what is causing it, but I am sure MS will get it straight. I did give MS feedback on the problem.

Thanks for the answer but I can't think of anything I was doing at the time I got the errors that would have been using HTTPS encryption.

Today W8 installed 2 Updates. I checked the event log after Windows Update finished and there were 10 more SChannel error 36888 in the log and the time stamps coincided with the Windows Updates. Hmmmm...

These schannel errors have been around for a long time and have affected virtually all Microsoft Operating systems since XP. Unfortunately, there's no single fix for these issues but the cause is invariably network related. I had a number of these in my event log several days ago, but the image had been refreshed several times since then and I haven't seen any for a couple of days. I have however downloaded Windows updates and a couple of applications from the store. Just out of interest, was the application you got from the store free or paid?

The first thing I'd suggest is making sure your time and date are correct, then, if possible, try alternative network connections. If using WiFi, try wired. If you're using any third party security applications, temporarily disable them and try the connection again. If you have a router, as a test, try placing the PC in the DMZ. If using the Windows firewall, temporally disable it. Depending on your hardware, make sure any network related drivers are up to date. I think you can probably see a pattern here...

The first time I told it to check for updates today, I got 6 SChannel errors. Checks made after that only give me 2 SChannel errors.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try them. I'm about ready to just ignore the errors as they don't appear to harm anything

It's happening because the server is HTTP only and the client (your machine) is trying to use HTTPS.

What to do? Disable logging for it - 0x0000 Do not log:

How to enable Schannel event logging in IIS

I guess my next question is, why is my machine trying to use HTTPS and not HTTP?. Is there a way to tell my machine to use HTTP?

Doubtful. Windows Update probably tries HTTPS for some function or request and then falls back to HTTP after. It's probably hard coded but I don't know too much of its inner workings. Disabling logging is the best way to go about it if the events are bothersome to you.

The HTTPS could even be for some future implementation or server that MS did not set up yet, but plan to. I dunno at all though; that's just speculation.

If you're feeling experimental, try running a Windows Update after the following registry change and a reboot:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 2.0\Client

DisabledByDefault 0

Thanks for explaining like that. I just hate seeing the red X errors in the log. I don't mind warnings but the red X's bug me. I have disabled logging it now so I'll feel better when I look at my event logs. I just wish someone over in the Windows 7 Forums and Microsoft's Customer Service could explain the Side by Side error messages I get on all my Windows 7 machines (4) like you just explained my SChannel errors here. That one really bugs me:mad:.

Yes, then re-enable logging too, reboot, run Windows Update and then check the logs again for the 36888 error to be there or not.
