BSOD using Chrome(youtube), Planetside2

Hello Eight Forum,

I tried to fill in as much of my computer information as I could in my profile's system specs.

I've had 3 BSOD's in one day.

The first was while watching a video on youtube using Chrome. I had a few tabs open at the same time. Wasn't expecting a problem. The BSOD happened suddenly without warning.

The second was while playing Planetside 2. The fans spun up to 100% (I couldn't hear them with headphones, I just felt it) and then it crashed.

The third was also with Planetside 2. Fans spun up, I didn't realize it, BSOD.

After that I was hyper aware of the fans. They would start spinning up and I would switch to desktop and they would instantly spin down. I'd wait 10 seconds and go back into the game and it was fine for a while. Then it would do it again.

Brand new laptop so probably driver issues and maybe hardware.

The file is attached. Thank you in advance! And happy 4th of July!!

Probably video card overheating.
While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting
Play the game with the hardware monitor open, then check it when the fans start to spin up (if it crashes too fast, then go to desktop before you check).

Also, try these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

If the laptop is under warranty and it's overheating:
- make sure that you're playing on a hard surface. If possible, use a laptop cooling pad also.
- if you confirm that this is an overheating issue, then take it in for warranty service.

All the reports aren't here, please let the collection app run for at least 15 minutes (or until the app itself tells you that it's done). Then zip it up and upload it with your next post.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

CPUID GPU-Z driver
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=GPUZ.sys

Please also update your Bluetooth drivers to the latest, Win8.1 compatible version. The Win8 version often has problems with Win8.1.

Please update your Elan Touchpad drivers to the latest, WIn8.1 compatible version (just a hunch on my part).

If this is an MSI system, please be sure that you have the latest version of the Killer Network Manager (dating from Jan/Feb 2014 or later).

Alrighty, monitored the video card. It would spike to 90Celcius and force close the game. Looked up the game and a lot of people were having similar problems because of the way the game utilizes GPU. So not necessarily bad, but I don't think it should do that since it's a top of the line card.

Updated all the drivers I could find to their more recent versions.

Looked at the forum post about nVidia Experience. Going to try disabling. not sure if I can reinstall without the streaming option. I'll give it a go with a custom installation.

Sorry about the log being incomplete. It would hang midway through and the window would become frozen (Couldn't move it or minimize or anything) and the popup dialogue for completion would come up behind it making it unreachable. I think I finished it this time!

Attached is the new file. Hope you had a great 4th of July! Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it because it's my Birthday today.

Thanks John!
George

Happy Birthday!

It's not unusual for the app to appear frozen. The WER stuff takes an awful lot of processing when gathering the reports.

It looks like this is a GPU overheating problem. The only things to help that on a laptop (without violating the warranty) are:
- blowing out all vents with canned air (DO NOT use a vacuum or an air compressor as they can damage the system).
- using a laptop cooling pad.

You do have the Killer Network Manager - so you must be sure that it's updated to at least the version from Jan/Feb of 2014.

I don't think that the Streaming Service is the source of your problem - but disabling it will take some of the load off the GPU. That'll (in turn) help keep the temps lower (how much? I don't know)

Good luck!

Thanks John!
Hope you're enjoying Sunday!

Ok so as far as the overheating, this machine is about 4 days old. I don't know why it would be doing that already or be clogged with dust. I also have a cooling pad, and when it overheats there is no discernible heat emanating from the bottom of the unit. It just overheats on the inside and shuts down. I'm thinking I'll ask them for a swap.

Also, I looked in network adapter and I seem to be running both Killer Wireless AND the Intel Dual Band Wireless that I ordered. Could they be conflicting with one another? The Intel is the Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260. I only ordered that one but I guess killer came bundled. Also I went into device manager and had it search for updates and windows said I have the most up to date driver. Should I download and install the latest anyway? And I did some snooping, seems a lot of people are having problems with the Killer Wireless. Am I able to just disable/uninstall since I have the Intel?

I've also had a couple more Bsod's since our last talk. And of new types! (Gotta catch 'em all!)

These include;
CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION
KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
EDIT: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
EDIT: REFERENCE_BY_POINTER (fltmgr.sys)
I've included the new report below. I had updated to the latest nVidia driver and the problems with the game seemed to lessen and the overheating was managing itself better. but then the other BSOD's popped up. Argh! hahaha. I would love to be able to resolve this without having to send it back for RMA but if I have to I have to. I don't think it should be overheating at all. I'm not even overclocking! (unless it's built in and I don't know it)

Hope you're having a great day. Thanks again for the help!

Sincerely,
George

EDIT: P.S. I was also looking around. A reason many nVidias can overheat is that their fans have been tuned for noise reduction. Is there a way to have it run at 100% all the time? I don't mind the power draw and the noise if I can have the game play well. (Great headphones) Or would you recommend sending it in to get looked at or replaced?

If it's only 4 days old, return it for a new one!!! Most places will exchange it rather than trying to fix it.

The "update" in Device Manager usually only checks Windows Update. Manufacturer's don't support Windows Update very well, so it usually has older drivers. For the Killer Network Manager, visit the MSI support site for your laptop and see what they have there.

There was a period (late last year) where there were a lot of problems with the Killer Network Manager (NOT the Killer wireless). Disabling the Killer Network Manager was the "fix" during that time. Once a fixed version of the Killer Network Manager was released, the problem went away as people updated to it.

AFAIK, there's no conflict between the Intel and Killer cards.

FYI - numerous BSOD's with different errors are usually a sign of a hardware problem (but it can be other things too).
The last 4 memory dumps have 4 different errors - and a quick look showed 6 or 7 different errors over the last 8 memory dumps.

Try the nVidia Control Panel to control fan speeds. If it doesn't do it for you, then you can try other utilities - but I've found that some of these utilities (MSI Afterburner, Riva Tuner, EVGA Precision) may cause BSOD's.

Your Open Hardware Monitor driver dates from 2008 (OpenHardwareMonitor.sys). Most times these drivers seem to be stable in Win8/8.1 - but due to their age I suggest not using them. This particular program also makes use of the WinRing libraries, which have caused BSOD's on some Windows systems. I recommend this free tool for monitoring temps: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Have you tried disabling the nVidia Kernel Streaming Service? If so, was it of any help?
