Solved BSOD while playing certain games or livestreaming

Hi, I have recently gotten a few BSODs while using Windows 7 Home, so I decided to upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro, I did a clean install and formatted my hard drive during the installation process hoping that it will solve maybe some drive related issues that was causing some of my BSODs.

After installing I am still getting BSODs, it's fine when I play certain games or browsing the net, but when I play one particular game so far on both Windows 7 and 8 it crashes and I get a BSOD, the most recent one I got while playing the game was BAD POOL HEADER with 0x00000019, the BSOD before this one was when I was livestreaming to check if the BSODs are gone that I was experiencing while using Windows 7. I checked the event logs and I kept getting errors about DeviceSetupManager with the code 0x80072EFD on both crashes.
I Googled the code and it says it's something about Windows update error or could be caused by virus. I'm not exactly sure how to fix either of these, I ran Malwarebytes to see if it can pick up anything, but it's clean, I'm using Windows Defender.

I'm also not too sure if it's hardware related since I get BSODs on both operating systems, even though I get completely different codes, BSOD and errors to what I have been getting with Windows 7. But when I was on Windows 7, I was on sevenforums trying to work out what is causing the BSODs and I have done a few things such as:
- running memtest86 for 24 hours and it found no errors
- ran disk check and then system file checker in the command prompt which was 100%.
- ran seatools and that had no errors
- ran driver verifier for 24 hours to try and cause a BSOD, but didn't cause any.
- ran 3 different benchmark tests to see if it's the Graphics card or any overheating issue and it was fine.
- Opened up my case to have a look around, cleared any dusts, reconnected the wires and re-seated the RAM.
- downloaded and installed the latest drivers

But here's the 2 minidumps that I've gotten since the Windows upgrade if any one could take a look at them for me to point me into the right direction to fixing this issue or to figure out if it's either software/drivers or hardware related.
Any help will be much appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Did you run the short/quick Seatools? If so, please run the long/extended test.

Which video benchmark tests did you run?

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum): http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html Please use Option 1 as it provides Event Viewer logs.

Please run these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
Feel free to skip those that you've already run.
I'm particular interested in the Prime95 test along with the video tests that I like to suggest. Also, the CPU test may surprise us, so please run it also.

Hi, thanks for replying.

I think I ran the long test with Seatools, but I'm not entirely sure, I can run it again tomorrow morning.
I ran the CPU test that you suggested and it passed.
These are the 3 benchmark tests that I did: Passmark, Unigine - Heaven and Futuremark 3dmark (demo version)

I ran the Prime95 test, and I go a STFS_FILE_SYSTEM BSOD shortly after starting, I didn't quite catch the error code before I got the BSOD, but it was referring to memory. I checked the event logs after I logged back in, it wasn't critical for once, just the same devicemanagersetup errors and some warnings. I've attached my previous minidumps plus the one that just happened while running the Prime95 test, along with all the information that SF Diagnostic Tool gathered.

View attachment 46109

UPDATE: after posting this message, I went to shutdown the PC, but the system restarted instead of shutting down and gave me a KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR, this has never happened and I've not seen this error before. It was once again, not a critical, just with more devicesetupmanager errors. I'm not sure if it was also caused by the Prime95 that was running in the background. But after it restarted from the BSOD it was doing a repairing C: driver before the login screen, I then logged back in, I ran command prompt in administrator and did the sfc /scannow and that was still 100%. But this latest BSOD didn't give me any minidumps.

Thank you again!

Prime95 stresses:
- RAM
- CPU cache
- memory controller
The Blend test mostly stresses RAM

Did you run the video tests that I suggested?

This looks like a hardware problem to me - and the KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR frequently is seen with hardware problems.
The rest of the stuff is to rule out the possibility of compatibility problems and driver issues.

In most cases the "Critical Errors" that you see in Event Viewer are those errors related to the Kernel.
Some are worth worrying about, some aren't.
For example, if you press and hold the power button to shut off your system, this should generate an Event ID 41 Critical Error.
You also get critical errors with different Intel power management software (and some other power management software also)
BSOD's should be accompanied by one Event ID 41 critical event as the shutdown was unexpected.

Event ID 41 critical errors can also be due to overheating, broken hardware, power failures, and any other time the OS unexpectedly shuts down. Simply put, the Event ID 41 error is Windows' way of saying that it doesn't know why it shut down.

FYI - I didn't note anything problematic in the other reports.

Please go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and see if you can locate mowav.sys
If so, please right click on it and select "Properties" - then check the Details tab and let us know what it says about the name and manufacturer of this driver (there's no evidence of it in your reports or on the web).
This is suspicious, so I'd also suggest a couple of these free anti-malware scans: Free Online AntiMalware Resources

Lot's of WinRing0x64.sys in the unloaded modules list - way more than normal.
Driver Reference Table - WinRing0x64.sys
Please uninstall any program that is using it (RealTemp, Corsair Link2 (known BSOD issues w/Win8), Razer GameBooster, etc)

Otherwise it's still looking like hardware. Please finish the tests (to include the long/extended Seatools test)
If you still don't find a problem, then this is the next step: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting

mowav.sys - this driver hasn't been added to the DRT as of this run. Please search Google/Bing for the driver if additional information is needed.

I ran the 15 minute Furmark video test, it was a steady 75 degrees from 4 minutes in and then 76 degrees from around 10 minutes and stayed on 76 for the remainder minutes.

I had a look in C:\Windows\System32\drivers to see if I can locate mowav.sys, but can't seem to see it there, even with hidden files option ticked.

With the
WinRing0x64.sys I don't have programs such as RealTemp, Corsair Link2, Razer GameBooster installed, so I'm not too sure which programs that I currently have installed uses this, I haven't got many programs installed on my hard drive, is there a way to find out what uses WinRing0x64.sys? I tried to do a search on C: drive hoping maybe this file would show up, but no results.

I think with Seatools the last time ran this program I did do the short test which passed, but when I started the long test, I got a fail about 10% into the scan, saying it "failed an important diagnostic test, possibly caused by problem sectors which are difficult to read", it then suggested that I download Seatools for DOS to repair the problems sectors. So I downloaded the program, burned the ISO file onto a DVD, restarted and booted the DVD, the program started to run, but it said there was no hard drive detected, I did this twice to make sure it wasn't showing up by mistake, but it still couldn't detect my hard drive after the second reboot. Is there any other programs that you know can scan and try to repair the problem sectors? Or should I just buy a new hard drive? Even though other than playing certain games or livestreaming, I don't get any errors that causes any BSOD. So I'm not sure if the hard drive is at fault.

Thank you

Don't worry about mowav.sys then - as it's not routinely cropping up in the memory dumps (so it's probably not at fault).

The most likely problem here is the hard drive. You can run the Western Digital Data LifeGuard for Windows test to see if it also fails the drive. You can also try HDTune (links are in this page: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure )

The inability of the DOS version to detect your hard drive is not unusual. At work we usually try disabling AHCI in order to get the hard drive recognized. But, if you don't reset it before rebooting you may cause further problems for the system - especially if you try to repair the boot process/startup repair before you switch it back.

Then there's the matter of the "fix". Are you fixing a single problem, or is this something that will repeat itself? Either way you'll have to reinstall Windows after each try. At work we don't even bother with this as the likelihood is great (IME) that the problem will repeat. We just replace the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

I ran the normal scan on HDTune and after several hours the health status said OK and it was all green on the error scan tab with no damaged squares. I only ran the extended scan on the WD one and it passed. Does this mean that my hard drive is fine and that Seatools just sometimes makes mistakes with their scans?
Since both of these scans says it's all OK, should I start the hardware stripdown that you suggested?

Thanks

It's more likely that one of the tests (either the Seagate or the Western Digital) was able to perform repairs on the disk.

Now you should wait and see if you still get BSOD's
If you get more BSOD's, zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with your next post (you may have to copy it to your Desktop in order to zip it up).

I tried playing the game that I am guaranteed to get a BSOD from after around 20 minutes of playing to see if I would get a BSOD this time round, and it was the same result. After I rebooted I ran the Prime95 blend test and that had also given me a BSOD, they were both the same MEMORY_MANAGEMENT along with the code 0x0000001a, in the event log there were a lot of errors for the usual devicesetupmanager event ID 131 and also the same in the warnings section.

I have attached both of the minidumps along with the driver list and event logs, let me know if you need the other files that I can grab with the SF diagnostic tool.

Hi, I decided to test my RAM sticks one by one and running Prime95 with each test, so far no BSOD from any of the RAM sticks. But I decided to only use 2 RAM sticks in slot 1 and 3 on the motherboard and played the game that gives me a BSOD, but after playing for about half an hour with the prime95 running in the background, it hasn't given me any BSOD yet. So I think maybe using 2 RAM sticks might do the trick! I'll try the game for longer tomorrow and then try and livestream it and see if I get any BSOD.
I will update you after I've tested this tomorrow.

But I want to thank you for all the help so far!

EDIT: Sorry I missed the post with the memory dumps!

The last 2 memory dumps look like hardware errors - so the BSOD's w/Prime95 tend to point to memory.
RAM is most likely (especially as you've avoided BSOD's with only 2 sticks of RAM) - but it's possibly the CPU (or event the mobo or video).

Hi, I've been messing around with swapping out RAM sticks and placing them in different slots like the second and fourth slot. My computer isn't as quick to give me a BSOD, like I can play the game that normally gives me a BSOD for about 2 hours long and not have any problems. I tried streaming and no BSOD for 2 hours, then I changed some setting on my streaming app to give me a better and less choppy video footage while live streaming and I got a BSOD about half an hour in with the better settings.
The BSOD is still the same MEMORY_MANAGEMENT same with the 0x0000001a and ntoskrnl.exe driver that's been highlighted.

I disabled windows automatic checking for update as I wasn't sure if the DeviceSetupManager, Event ID 131 with the message "Metadata staging failed, result={0B27A0D3-2241-5C2F-A649-C9CD976A7B62} for container '0x80072EFD'" was related to windows update? I googled the code '0x80072EFD' and it pointed to that. I'm not sure if that helped. I do check for new windows update everyday since I have disabled it for now.

But here's the minidump, but I think it's probably the same as the last one I posted View attachment 46638

You mentioned in the last post that it's possibly the CPU, the mobo or video. Is there any more test to check for faults for these? In case it missed anything, even though I have done quite a few benchmark tests to test the GPU, so I think maybe that GPU is fine? I passed the CPU test that your site linked to, but I think that's only one test, but I don't think I've tested the mobo yet. Or is there any other test you think may point to hardware is at fault?

I am currently running the 7byte hot CPU tester lite version from your website to test the system, I'll leave it running for 6 hours like it suggested and see if I get any BSODs.

UPDATE: after doing the 6 hour CPU test, no BSOD and everything finished without error, here is the screenshot: View attachment 46647
Is it possible to rule out that my GPU and CPU is not at fault at this stage or should I do more test? And how do I go about testing the mobo or anything else that can possibly be at fault?

Thank you!

Have you run the Intel CPU test yet? If not, please do so. I prefer the tests that are made by the people who made the hardware as they are most familiar with the quirks it has.

The next step is testing the RAM in detail (which you may have already done)

A bit of explanation is needed here.
I'm pretty confident that this is a memory problem (because of the crashes whenever using Prime95).
I don't think that it's video memory as you've had no issues with that in the diagnostics
You've passed the hard drive test (test the pagefile - although it hasn't been reset (I don't think that's necessary))
That leaves (basically), the CPU, the RAM, and the mobo as the most likely culprits.
There are no tests that reliably diagnose the motherboard (they're too expensive to develop for a product that has a limited lifespan). Under warranty, it's cheaper for the OEM to replace the ones that are suspected to be bad.

Please note the "most likely", "probably", "should be", etc that I use. This is because this is all based on the odds of it being a problem - there are rarely any certainties in this sort of diagnosis. FWIW - I spent almost a year troubleshooting a motherboard that I had before I bit the bullet and tried a new one. And upon doing that, all my problems went away - but it was still a risk (and I would have been out the $200 I spent for the new mobo).

Finishing the Intel CPU test will help to rule out the CPU.

Then you'll need to test the RAM in depth.
Try each stick in slot 1 and see if all cause BSOD's or not (use Prime95 to speed up the crashes)
If not, note the one that doesn't and try it in all the other slots

If all do BSOD, then it's probably the mobo.
But you still would need to verify that it's not the RAM (by purchasing new RAM and testing it).
This is not very likely (so the mobo is most likely) - but it's your call as it's your money being spent here.

I suggest that, regardless of which path you take, that you purchase new parts from a shop that will refund your full purchase price if the parts aren't needed.

The memory dump seems to be the same.

I did the intel CPU test and it passed.

I also updated my bios to 2104 after the CPU test, I also set the recommended frequency and time on them, hoping maybe that'll fix some problems. After updating the bios, I put back 4 of my 4GB RAM sticks back into the mobo and I could livestream for about 3-3.5 hours or so, which is a massive improvement! After about 3 hours of livestreaming, I wanted to test it further with running Prime95 in the background, but unfortunately it gave me the same MEMORY_MANAGEMENT BSOD about half an hour into it.

I will purchase 2x4GB RAM sticks tomorrow and do some more tests to see if it's just my RAM sticks or the mobo by testing them in different slots.
I'll post back the results soon.

Thanks!

I won't be able to get any new RAM until sometime early next week as my local PC stores haven't got any in. So I'll reply back when the RAM I ordered have arrived.

Thanks

Hi, great news! I installed the new RAM and livestreamed while playing quite a few games for a long time and no BSODs so far, I think it was my RAM that was a little faulty after all that.

I'll mark this as solved.
I want to thank you so much for taking out your time to help me diagnose my BSOD problem!
