Hey guys
Please i really need some help, I just got a new HP ENVY laptop with windows 8.1 on it. However whenever i connect my internet modem , the laptop automatically crashes and the blue screen appears . At first i thought the problem was from my windows 8.1 OS , However i did some crash dump analysis and found out that the problem was driver related , I also asked some questions on the windows forum
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-system/please-help-very-worried-windows-... , the members over there analysized the crash dump files and also attributed the problem to the mediatek/ralink driver. I was advised to update my mediatek/ralink drivers and also my BIOS . I would like to know if this error is common with this model of HP laptops and i would also appreciate if a solution to this problem.

I used a crash dump analysis app to find the error , I have uploaded a zip folder with my dump files and i have also included the analysis as well,. Please i would really appreciate if someone could come to my aid urgently.
Thanks

I believe the information you received on the previous forum was accurate. This is definitely a software issue and you need to try to update your drivers. There is a driver on the HP website that specifically relates to the problem you are having.
Download the drivers from another computer and put them on a flash drive and transfer them to your computer with the issue.

Drivers & software - HP Support Center

In looking further, it looks like the driver designed to resolve that problem is the one you are running, however it is not the one that's crashing.
You say that you are connecting your modem, is this a USB WiMax card? Who is the manufacturer? Is it actually MediaTek branded? If this is the case, you need to find out what the proper driver for the card is. Your first stop would be their website, i cannot tell you which driver to download because I do not know what the chipset it. If you can't find it on their website, call them.

If this is a wimax card built into the HP Envy, contact HP directly via phone.

I just saw a post that was made some time ago
http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-crashes-debugging/16304-critical_process_died-please-help-t-t.html

You have a MediaTek MT7118 WiMAX USB Card - Win7 didn't like these devices, so I suspect that Windows 8 won't like them either. Here's my rant about these devices:
I do not recommend using wireless USB devices. Especially in Win7/Windows 8 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7(and I suspect with Windows 8) - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.

Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7/Windows 8 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.
The worst case scenario is to uninstall it's software and physically remove the device from the system in order to test if it's causing the BSOD's.

I'm guessing this could be the same problem i am facing. So i would like to know if it is possible to update my MediaTek MT7118 WiMAX USB Card to one that works with Windows 8 or 8.1

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum): http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html Please use Option 1 as it provides Event Viewer logs.

I understand that this is a very important problem for you and that you'd like it solved as soon as is possible. But there are other circumstances that you may not be aware of. Please read this pinned topic about waiting for a response: http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-crashes-debugging/48165-have-you-been-waiting-response.html

I am familiar with SpiritX and Zigzag3143 and they do excellent BSOD work.

All 6 memory dumps blame mt7118vu_x64.sys - a driver for your MediaTek WIMAX adapter.

HP support lists 94 different models of the HP Envy 17 system - which one is yours?
HP Support, Drivers, Contact and Help Forums | HP ® Support

The MediaTek website doesn't list the Mediatek MT7118 USB card
Where did you get the driver from (please provide a link)?
The MediaTek driver that you highlighted in your first post dates from 2010
The one in the dump files dates from 2011
It's possible that this device is not compatible with Win8.1

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

Without the additional reports that I requested in the first paragraph of my post, I cannot do much more for you.
Good luck!

Hello Usama
Thanks for replying , I didn't download the The MT7118 driver , It seemed to have been pre-installed in the modem . When i click "about" on the modem interface it shows the modem driver as "mediatek MT7118" . Here is the SF file you requested. My HP 17'' ENVY model is ENVY 17-j101sa

What's the make and model of the modem?
I would contact the support center for the modem and see if:
- they have any more recent drivers
- if the device is compatible with Win8.1

If unable to get Win8.1 compatible drivers for the device, my suggestion is to get a device that is compatible with Win8.1

As an aside, some HP's have had BIOS/UEFI issues w/Win8.1 Please see about updating the BIOS/UEFI to the latest version (your current version is F.36 and the most current version is F.56). I believe this is the driver download link for your system: Software & driver downloads HP ENVY 17-j101sa Notebook PC | HP® Support

Beyond that, there's not much else that we can do here. There is a small possibility that the BIOS/UEFI update may help your BSOD issues. But the incompatibility will still exist even if the device seems to be working properly (for the time being).

Also, make sure that you keep up with the Windows Updates. This is a "double-edged sword" - it may help improve compatibility or it may cause further issues with the WiMax device. There's no telling until you try it.

Good luck!

Hi Usama , I really appreciate your interest in helping me . The make and model of the modem is greenpacket UH250.

Greenpacket does not provide drivers for their products on the web.
I'd suggest checking with the telecom provider for this device to see if they have Win8.1 compatible drivers for it.

If not, your choices are to get a new modem or to downgrade your system to one that is compatible w/the current drivers (I'd suggest Win7).

Good luck!
