Solved Bad Pool Caller in Windows 8.1

Hi everyone,

I saw this BSOD for the first time last night. I don't know exactly how it happened: my sister was using my computer to edit some photos from her travels on Photoshop. She shut it down. I opened it up and pushed the power button a little while later. After the HP loading screen, I saw a BSOD for "Bad Pool Caller."

I have seen some issues due to an outdated graphics driver. When I updated to Windows 8.1, I began seeing delays upon wake up and entries in the Reliability Monitor for hardware errors. I've tried updating my graphics drivers but since I use switchable graphics, it is actually extremely difficult to do so. HP's drivers don't allow me to open them and Leshcat's drivers have failed, too. That is why I have given up on updating them.

Minidump file is attached. Please let me know. Thanks for your assistance.

EDIT: If it is absolutely necessary, there's a little computer shop not too far from me. They have been very helpful in the past. I could always take my system to them. They're actual pros. I tried getting the Geek Squad to fix it for me first and all they did was lead my computer to a black screen. I'm sure they're not all like that, but from what I saw, they act before they think.

Only 41 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 60 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

I also have problems with an outdated graphics driver. Unfortunately, it will contribute to some problems with stability. I'm unable to use switchable graphics on my system due to this. I'll have to give Leshcat's drivers a try myself!

It's your choice as to what to do about updating them - but I'll suggest it simply because of the age of the drivers on your system.

Here's my analysis:

FWIW - I've recently heard of a BIOS/UEFI update being available for the HP Envy's (I believe it was for the M6 series).
Please check for it at the HP site. If available, please install it using the HP Support Assistant software.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

Make sure that you update the Bluetooth drivers to 8.1 compatible version - the 8 version often has problems in 8.1

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

My sister lied to me and actually shut down the computer by holding down the power button. She has a Mac.

Could that be why I saw the BSOD? Is it likely to recur when I shut it down or restart it properly?

Also, what do the drivers in blue mean? Are they safe as is?

EDIT 1: I updated Cyberlink Power2Go from HP to version 8.0.3.3207. That should solve the CLVirtualDrive.sys compatibility issue. I updated Intel Smart Connect Technology directly from Intel to version 5.0.10.2793. That should solve the WPRO_41_2001.sys compatibility issue. I'm hesitant to update Acronis True Image to the latest since I read that modifications to the software could make the system very unstable and that trying to remove it also causes BSODs occasionally.

I'm not sure what to do with my HP wireless mouse. If I uninstall the driver I won't be able to use it. HP has not released new drivers for several years now. Is it necessary for me to buy a new Logitech mouse to replace it?

EDIT 2: To address some of your other concerns, I did the BIOS update when it was first released. I just did a Bluetooth driver update today - my last set of drivers were released a little before 8.1 came out, but it turns out they did not have 8.1 compatibility, though I never noticed any issues. Anyway, these drivers will do it. Also, my Windows is completely up to date. There might just be a few listed, but the so-called Windows 8.1.1 update probably erased the traces of the earlier ones.

The old (Win7 and earlier) BSOD would say that the first BSOD may not be significant. They suggested rebooting in order to see what happens.

The drivers in blue are merely links for the 3rd party drivers that were present in the memory dump (they're in the code box above the blue drivers). So, for the drivers in red, you look up their name, then look for the link in blue with their name. Going to that link takes you to the page in my Driver Reference Table where you should be able to find a link/suggestion on where to get an update from.

Do not buy a new mouse just now - wait and see what happens.
If you have a wired mouse laying around you can try that in place of the wireless mouse (temporarily) to see if that helps (in the case of repeated BSOD's). For now, just don't do anything and we'll see what happens.

The number of updates is just an average - and it changes a lot depending on hardware/software/location/etc.
The point here is to visit Windows Update and be sure that you have all the updates.

Now we wait to see if the BSOD returns......................

I haven't seen the BSOD again so I think we can say that it was due to my sister forgetting how to use Windows. Thanks for your help, John!
