Solved Frequent BSOD without dump files - SSD issue?

Hi All,

I bought my Sony VAIO flip on 12 Feb this year. At the beginning of April it started frequently crashing (a few times a day when using it on my commute and in the evening). It (almost) always crashes with a BSOD, but no error code, and no crash dump generated. About a quarter of the time, upon restarting from the crash, its says "Couldn't start Windows. Internal SSD not found". I'd keep restarting it and it would fail to start with the same error. If I leave it for a while (30 mins+), it restarts fine, until the next crash.

Given the 'SSD not found' errors, I had assumed it was a hardware fault with the drive failing intermittently. This would also explain the lack of crash dumps if the drive had issues and Windows couldn't write to it. However, I've read around and found some SSDs displaying this behaviour after a crash due to unexpected power loss to the drive, so I'm now wondering if this is a symptom not a cause.

Furthermore, windows restore does show windows updated some drivers at the beginning of April when the crashes started.

I did have one crash with and error code and a dump (24th April) but this is the exception. From the event log (occurrences of id 41 "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first") I can see crashes a few times a day every day I've used the computer in April:

I've tried cloning the hard drive to an external one and booting from that to eliminate issues with the internal hard drive but I can't really get that to work.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Many thanks,
Ian

  • OS
    Windows 8
Event ID 41 is Windows way of saying it doesn't know why the system shut down.
This can be crashes, overheating, holding the power button down, etc

Please start by running Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
Please be sure to read the BSOD screen for the name displayed on it - as the system may not save the memory dumps.

Most of the reports that I've seen have networking symptoms - so we'll start there first.

1) Please temporarily uninstall AVG (and enable Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall) and see if that helps stop the issues.

2) Visit Vaio Update and get ALL updates. Although I like Sony systems, this is by far the most frustrating thing for me when working on them. Just keep refreshing the screen and installing stuff until everything shows as being updated. If it makes you pull your hair out, please don't drop it on the keyboard :)

3) If you have any network-aware devices plugged into the system, please uninstall their software and physically remove the device from the computer while we're testing (please let us know if you have anything like this).

Many thanks for taking time to look at this for me.

Interestingly I thought I'd uninstalled AVG (I have no AVG icons in my start menu and have been using windows defender). However it was still in my installed applications. The uninstaller failed, so I ran the AVG remover from here: http://www.avg.com/ww-en/utilities
I now no longer have any AVG files or processes running.

Also today, I got the internal disk not found after a normal hibernation, not a crash. Lends weight the intermittent faulty SSD ???

I thought I had vaio update set to auto install updates, but I found a few in there and have updated them, now vaio update is empty.

I've set up the driver verifier as per the instructions and I'll await a crash.

Thanks again,
Ian

Intermittent faults are very, very hard to diagnose.
Faults like this when booting can be due to other problems also.

Have you ensured that the SSD firmware is up to date?
Have you run the SSD's tools to check it's health?
Have you tried CrystalDiskMark (actually an SSD benchmarking tool): Software - Crystal Dew World
(I'm not familiar with it myself)

We'll wait for the results of Driver Verifier.........

Thank you so much again for your help.

I have tried running Smartmontools for the SSD, which didn't turn up any errors. I'll try CrystalDiskMark too.

Things were pretty stable for a while then a series of crashes all of which got stuck on the BSOD at 0% (left the first one for 2 hours before giving up). I did however get error codes this time unlike my normal crashes over the last month. I got the following:
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED
0xc000021a

However, because they all got stuck a 0%, there are no dumps :-(

Thanks again.
Ian

What did you do special when setting the SSD up?
One popular "tweak" is to disable the paging file - which will stop the system from collecting dump files.
Here's a draft article I made on how dump files are generated.
Scroll through it to see if there's anything else that might stop dump files from being collected: BSOD Crash Dump Generation

Check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.dmp Check the date stamp on this to see if it's more current than 24 April 2014

Check at Sony for an update to the Intel Smart Connect Technology drivers
Also check at http://downloadcenter.intel.com if you can't find anything at Sony

While at the Intel site, please update your Intel Wireless Bluetooth drivers. Older versions (Win8) don't work very well with Win8.1

Are you running Driver Verifier? If so, that could be the cause of the crashes.
If that's the case, then the lack of a pattern to the crashes is suggestive of a hardware/compatiblity/low-level driver issue.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics. Let us know the results and we can move on from there.

Hi again,

So I tried CrystalDiskInfo which also showed up no problems.

I haven't disabled the page file. Indeed I had an idea: I manual caused a crash using NotMyFault to see if that would create a mini dump and indeed it did. This proves my system is correctly set up to create dumps and that it can't for some other reason during a real crash. Again perhaps suggests the disk is the cause. After that manual crash had I slight scare that I'd done something really stupid, because windows wouldn't start at all. Went to the recovery screen and tried to restore to a restore point from earlier in the day and the restore failed, saying it couldn't find a file. I was about to start refreshing the disk from a clone, when without any changes it just started up fine and hasn't crashed since. Odd.

MEMORY.dmp is old.

I was unable to find updates for Intel Smart Connect Technology (i will look harder today), but whilst on the Intel site, I ran their driver update tool which found updates for bluetooth and wife, which I installed.

Driver verifier is running, yes.

Regarding hardware diagnostics, I have a Samsung MZNTD256HAGL SSD, and its not listed under samsung support and Samsung's magician software doesn't recognise it. I'll try the Samsung es-tool which I have on a boot usb already.

Will post when I have a dump with driver verifier info/hardware diagnostics.

Thanks again.

There are many, many reasons that dump files may not be created. So many that, after researching it, I decided not to troubleshoot dump file creation because of the high chance of not being able to find the cause and then fix it.

The line between hardware and software is blurred (when discussing BSOD's). There are many things that act like hardware but are caused by software - and there are software problems that are actually caused by hardware. It makes all this a bit difficult.

Although the primary reason for using Driver Verifier is to cause a crash that identifies a problem driver - there are other possibilities:
- a crash may not happen
- a crash may happen, but not be a Driver Verifier crash
- a crash may happen, but it may point to hardware
- a crash may happen, but it may point to Windows drivers
- a crash may happen, but fixing the blamed driver may not fix the problem.

Most of these generally mean that there's a hardware problems (or even a Windows problem). But that's why we restrict Driver Verifier to testing 3rd party drivers.

Let us know the results of the hardware diagnostics and only wait about 36 hours for a Driver Verifier crash (an estimate on my part).

Good luck!

Ah, that'll be the Intel Graphics driver. The intel driver update utility did say the graphics driver was out of date:

Graphics Driver (Newer Driver Available)
Product Detected Intel® HD Graphics 4400
Current Driver Installed 10.18.10.3304
Newer Driver Available: 15.33.18.64.3496 (10.18.10.3496)

However, when I tried to run the installer it downloaded it said:

The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer.

However the download page for my model only has graphics drivers for win 8, not 8.1: Sony : SVF13N1D4E : VAIO Touch Search

It looks like the one listed under win 8 is more recent than the in i have, perhaps i should try that...?

Interestingly, The latest dump is not a Driver Verifier Enabled dump - yet it does blame a 3rd party driver.

First try the latest driver from Sony and see if that helps.
If not, then try the Intel driver for 8.1

The Intel driver may not have some features that Sony has added for their systems.
So make a system restore point, backup your data, and ensure that you have a copy of the latest Sony driver on hand.

If the system doesn't operate properly, first try to roll back the driver in Device Manager.
If that doesn't work, then try going back to the System Restore Point
And if that doesn't work, then try installing the Sony driver package.

Good luck!

So I updated the intel graphics driver from Sony. Crashes seem anecdotally less frequent but still happen regularly. Still not producing dumps. Various crashes with codes CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED, 0xc000021a, KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR.
Interestingly yesterday, the application I was using just before the crash (Eclipse) started complaining about files being missing.

Completed SSD and memory hardware diagnostics without any errors reported.

Please provide this information (again) so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum): http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html Please use Option 1 as it provides Event Viewer logs.

Also, please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

I'm thinking that this is a hardware problem.
As your system is still under warranty, I'd suggest contacting the place you purchased it from in order to find out about warranty repairs.

When doing so, be certain to be very specific about how often and under what circumstances that the BSOD's appear.

Hi again,

Please find requested details attached.

I'll run the hardware monitor as requested.

I spoke to Sony about a repair under warranty, and they said they would do it if it was a hardware problem, although the built in hardware diagnostics didn't show anything up, so I may have some problems convincing them it is a hardware problem. They asked me to reset the computer and see if it still crashed, to eliminate any software issues. I may clone the hard drive (so I can get back to where I currently am) and do that if we don't find anything here.

Thanks again for all the help.

Ian

No new memory dumps in the uploaded reports.
No new BSOD's in the WER section of MSINFO32
One Event ID 41 on 13 May at 13:55

Event ID 41's can be caused by:
- crashes due to software
- turning the system off by holding the power button down
- crashes due to hardware

The single Event ID 41 from 13 May has no suggestion of other causes - so it's most likely (IMO) that it was either caused by holding the power button down to shut off - or by a hardware problem that isn't recognized by Windows.

As you cite these BSOD crashes:
Various crashes with codes CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED, 0xc000021a, KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR.
I tend to believe that these are caused by problems with the system that aren't recognized by Windows (in other words - hardware).

After going over the reports again, the only thing that I noticed was that Secure Boot was turned off.
I would suggest that, when you reset the system:
- you do it from recovery disks/drive
- you enable Secure Boot before starting the recovery
I suggest this because I wonder if the system will even boot to recovery after you enable Secure Boot. It depends on the steps that were taken to install Windows without Secure Boot. The hard drive has 6 partitions on it, so it's possible that it can work from the Vaio recovery mode.

Many, many errors in Event Viewer...Admin log. Mostly from the Multimedia Class Scheduler service and "A pointer device did not report a valid unit of angular measurement." I'd reset the system and then would check to see if these errors recur.

Good luck!

Hi John,
I believe you're right - on the 13th I had a 15minute hang at the log in screen, so I held down the power button.

I had temporarily turned off secure boot so I could run hardware diagnostics from a boot USB. Turning it back on had no impact.

So, I refreshed (not reset) my system (the option which reinstalls windows with default settings, removes all apps, but keeps personal docs and files). This has not helped at all - still the same crashes with the same characteristics. I'll reset as well just to make sure.

I guess now now it's time to send it back to Sony to fix a hardware problem.

Thanks again,
Ian

Sony may ask you to reinstall Windows in order to check it before sending it in.
Go ahead and do that, as they'll likely do it once you've sent it in to them (so you can rule that out as a "fix").

Good luck!

Hi again,

I reset the PC back to its original state with the Vaio recovery tools. And... I'm surprised and pleased to report I haven't had any crashes since I reset it four days ago! I did have one 'operating system not found' upon normal start up, but that hasn't happened again, so perhaps I was doing something stupid. I'll wait a few more days before declaring victory, and then start reinstalling applications I need, and see if any one of them causes crashes to start again.

I'd convinced myself it was a hardware issue, but indeed now it seems not :)

Thanks,
Ian

Although resetting the PC back to it's original state isn't an "elegant" solution, it's proven it's worth here.
I'm glad that you've fixed it! Thanks for letting us know.

Hi, just to follow up, since I refreshed my pc, I've had just 7 event log 41 events (unexpected restart) in 18 days. I think a couple of them were forced restarts due to the system becoming unresponsive, the rest were crashes with the same symptoms as before. 6 of these were since I reinstalled all the development apps I need to work 11 days ago. I haven't reinstalled everything I had installed before. 5 of the crashes are in two clusters of quick succession a few mins apart, so it feels like 4 crashes.

At the moment this is very much a manageable level. If it gets worse or I feel the need to make it more reliable I guess I'll refresh again and install apps more slowly so I can identity which is causing issues.

Thanks again for all your help. It's great to have a usable computer again!
