Solved Multiple BSODs everyday might be game related

I really need help diagnosing these BSODs.
1st off i recovered my laptop about 3 days ago to factory and it took about 10 hours then i refreshed it for another 3 hours so its all at default settings. I just started using it again today so this is the 1st time its really been on since recovery and i got a BSOD about 10-15min after playing DayZ Standalone (played for only 15mins then closed the game).

OK now to my point, before i recovered my laptop i would get around 3-6 BSODs a day sometimes i would get none a day and that was rare. i had all windows updates installed, i updated my graphics card, i ran memtest, done SFC/SCANNOW, DISM restorehealth and all that sort. I had 6gig ram and now only 4 gig ram is running unattentionally and i have not had a BSOD so far. i hope it is only ram related and nothing more serious.

Feel free to ask me questions about the issue of course. I'd appreciate the help.

Just got more BSODs, only 1 minidump was collected out of the 4 BSODs i just got. After the BSODs my system went to diagnostic mode and just failed so i rebooted normally.

Is there any reason why you haven't updated to Win8.1 (it's free)? I only ask to see if you've had problems with it. Please don't update it until we've stabilized the system.

You only have 24 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all). Missing Windows Updates can cause these sort of issues.

Although it's difficult to make a diagnosis of this type with only 2 memory dumps - I suspect either hardware or low-level drivers. Please start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

CyberLink Virtual Device Driver

If unable to find an update for this driver, don't be overly concerned - but do let us know.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Thanks for the help usasma,
Yesterday I installed the windows updates and it made it worse so I did some research which led me to viewing the update history where most of the updates failed, windows update said they were installed so I did a system restore and ran a few commands in command prompt then proceeded to download the updates 20 at a time. Updates installed this time successfully and right now I am downloading the Power2Go 8 updates from Power2Go Updates | CyberLink and hopefully it will update the driver.

Update: The Cyberlink programs factory installed on my system were trail versions and cannot be updated so I am going to uninstall

So far I have not had a BSOD yet and will let you know if I get another. Everything should be up to date and HP support assistance had an update for Power2Go after I uninstalled it so I just kept it.

Update: I started playing DayZ Standalone and got Multiple BSODs, i uninstalled Power2Go because i think its part of the problem. Also what dump files should I upload? I only have the minidumps which i will upload to this post.

Have you started the hardware diagnostics that I suggested ( Hardware Diagnostics )?
If so, what were the results?

The latest memory dump specifically blames hardware, so the diagnostics are needed.
In the event that this is a problem with the hard drive, it's essential to backup your stuff now - as there's no telling if the hard drive will die suddenly or not.

AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
NOTE: these symptoms were from the previous release of OverDrive. The new release uses the same driver name, but is dated from 4 November 2013.
Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.
Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

It is going to be difficult for me to get a CD boot disk so i'm using a USB Drive. The problem i am having with the USB is that it will not boot. I ran memtest before and worked just fine but for some reason SeaTools or HDSDos will not work. I ran the HDD diagnostic that came equipped with my laptop by HP and came back with no errors.

Run Seatools for Windows - it runs within Windows without the need for a boot disk.
It's free from here: SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

Did you run the rest of the diagnostics (Prime95, FurMark, the other video tests, and the CPU stress test)?
If so, what were the results of them?

I uninstalled my ATI software with the removal tool and the graphics display reverted to windows display adapter in device manager and I installed 14-4-mobility-win7-win8-win8.1-64-dd-ccc-whql.exe though device manager for the display and i'm nowback to Radeon HD. I do not have AMD Catalyst or anything AMD related just the driver and I got 2 BSODs back to back. I also scanned my HDD with the Seagate tool for windows you mentioned twice for each test (Short, Long, S.M.A.R.T). It came back with a pass for all but the Fix All and Advanced options will not work at all. I also followed the instructions on AMD on how to uninstall the catalyst without uninstalling the chipsets.

Only things related too AMD on my HDD
C:\AMD\Support\
14-4-mobility-win7-win8-win8.1-64-dd-ccc-whql folder
C:\Programs\AMD\
amdkmpfd has 3 files in it a CES,IEZ, and SEZ file

Nice, thorough work on the AMD video drivers!

Did you run the rest of the diagnostics (Prime95, FurMark, the other video tests, and the CPU stress test)?
Hardware Diagnostics
If so, what were the results of them (they run from within Windows)?

If you passed the Seagate Long test, then we presume the hard drive is good (I can't recall if you have run the HP diagnostics or not). Unfortunately, hard drive problems aren't just tested by the one test - so there can still be problems that may seem related to it (things like file system filter drivers, bad cables/slots, etc)

The latest memory dumps blame memory corruption. If we presume that this is a hardware issue, we have to wonder where the corruption is coming from (hardware or software?)? How long ago did you run MemTest? Was it the latest version (5.01 for MemTest86+ from here: Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool ) Was the memtest run with all the RAM in place, or just one stick?

Memory can be in other places (video card, motherboard, CPU, even the hard drive, etc). Prime95 is a good test for most memory, and the video and CPU tests in the diagnostics I suggested can help to rule that out also.

The latest memory dump was corrupted - but of a corruption I haven't seen before. The dump actually ran, but the drivers have errors in the names (and the one's that I saw were only the Windows drivers - not the 3rd party ones). Normally I'd suspect that the hard drive was to blame for this - but part of the dump generation process passes through memory, so it could also be that. And if only the Windows drivers are corrupted - what's the cause of that?

Have you run chkdsk /r /f on each of the volumes of this hard drive (C: and D:)?
If so, what were the results?
If not, it must be run from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt - and the system may ask you if you want to do it after a reboot. Answer Y or Yes and reboot the system (it may take a while to run).

When you recovered your system, did you:
- Refresh
- Reset
- recover using the recovery partition
- recover using the HP recovery drive/disks
- recover using the Microsoft recovery drive

Please make a recovery drive/set of disks using the HP software as it may be necessary to start the system over in order to rule out Windows problems. Also, be sure to backup your stuff so that it doesn't disappear when restoring the system.

As these seem to also have a network component, please:
- update your wired and wireless network drivers to the latest available versions
- update you bluetooth drivers to the latest available version
- update the drivers for any USB devices to the latest available version

I note multiple issues with USB device VID_046D&PID_C52B in the WER section of MSINFO32.
One solution is to check C:\Windows\Inf for the usb.inf file. If not present, post back and we'll see if we can locate a copy for you (from this post: Previously known usb devices stop being recognized - Microsoft Community )

This device is actually the USB receiver from Logitech. In order to test it you'll have to use a regular USB mouse and keyboard - and then remove the Logitech software and then remove the USB receiver from the computer..

Just FYI - I have a Logitech TrackBall and I use the Logitech software - and I still have some unexplained "glitches" on my system that I think are attributed to this software. If I didn't need it, I'd gladly get rid of it.

Finally, let's give Driver Verifier a try (since the last 3 were all STOP 0x3B errors). Please follow these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

When i recovered my laptop I used the "remove everything and re-install windows" option under general pc settings then when it recovered I refreshed using "refresh your pc without affecting your files."

I updated all drivers HP Support Assistance had for my laptop and I installed Setpoint for my USB mouse.
Ran chkdsk /r for C: and D: and found no problems.
Driver Verifier is my next step i'm going to use to diagnose when i get home later since I don't know how long it will take.

Strange thing is my BIOS says I have 4024MB memory when i have 6g, a 4g stick and a 2g stick, I had a couple BSODs that rebooted my pc to normal and under system it showed i had 4g installed ram so I have to reboot to get the 6g back. So when i run memtest86 does it only run the 4g stick since my BIOS says i have 4g installed?

I dont get any BSODs unless i run a game like guildwars 2 or dayz.

Have you updated your BIOS?
Is the system still under warranty?

Let's see what Driver Verifier has to say.....

My 1 Year Warranty expired in January and I had this computer for only 1 and a half years. I've been getting BSODs about 3 months after getting it because of playing graphic intense games were making it overheat so I bought a cooling pad and the crashes went away for a while. Before I got help from you the BSODs were nonstop even on start up but now i'm getting them only when I play these games so we're getting closer. I suspect it is either my RAM or Graphics card but I really want to be sure before spending money to try and fix the issue that may still be there.
My BIOS is updated already to a F35 and Driver Verifier is running so I am going to play a game because that will make it crash.

Update: I got a BSOD and a black screen playing a game and no dump was created, or maybe it's in another location?

Ok I think I found the problem. I ran memtest86 with my 2g stick only in slot 2 and I got 12 errors
View attachment 42569

I then ran it with both my sticks, I put the 2g stick in slot 1 (4g sticks original slot) and my 4g in slot 2 (2g sticks original slot) and got 1 error.
View attachment 42570

This time I ran the 4g stick in slot 2 and it came back with no errors so I ran it another pass and got 10 errors.

With both sticks in their original position I got no errors but i'm going to check again just to be safe.
I ran both sticks individually in Slot 1 only with no errors so Slot 2 is the culprit and I don't know if it's bad or not.

If you get no errors with either stick in slot 1, I'd assume that the sticks were good
Therefore, if you get errors in slot 2, the problem seems to be with the slot.

Try slot 2 when the system is cold, then again when it's hot - see if there's any difference in how long or how many errors that you get.

Double check the slot and make sure that there's no dirt/dust in the slots.
When seating the RAM in it, pay extra attention to making sure it's fully and properly seated.

Finally, spend a day or two with RAM only in slot 1 and see if you remain BSOD free.

I tested slot 2 again with both sticks and I don't get any errors when cold, it just freezes. I put the 4g in slot 2 and 2g in slot 1 and memtest only booted with the 4g stick in slot 2 and it passed with no errors, WTF? No clue what's going on here but my computer is running full 6g with them swapped from their original position. This isn't making any sense at all, slot 1 is bootable with any of my 4g ram but slot 2 will not boot unless slot 1 is occupied.

And just to add to this; my laptop booted up extremely fast and everything loaded quick. It usually takes file explorer or google chrome about 3-5 seconds to open from boot but only took less then 1 second. So I will leave the ram where it is now and wait to see if I get a BSOD.

I failed to mention that slot 2 looks like it's off centered from the case and when the ram is in I can see the brass on 1 part but not the other on the same side. I can't tell if this affects the seating.

I would visually verify that there's nothing stuck in slot 2
Then I would see if I could insert the stick so that you can see equal brass on both sides.
If it isn't centered, then try gently wiggling it to see if it'll seat better.

Good luck!

I made sure they were seated in all the way but now i'm thinking it's a heat issue since my laptop hits 80 degrees C. I have the sticks swapped and no BSOD just freezing when my laptop gets hot so I use my cooling pad and I can use it for hours while playing games. It freezes sometimes but not as much as if i get a BSOD.

Heat will do it. Have you blown out the vents with canned air (DON'T use an air compressor or a vacuum as they may damage the system).

I was able to blow some air into the vents and got them all cleaned out and so far I haven't had any failures for the past 2 days! My 4g stick sits in the slot better then the 2g for some reason so i'm going to keeping it that way. I still need to find a better way to cool my system since it sometimes wants to creep up over 70c. I want to thank you for all your help in helping me track down the source.
