I have a 1 month old new laptop computer with Windows 8.1 on a solid disk that I first used March 3, 2014. I’ve been trying to prevent or hide the bizarre Windows 8 touchscreen creations. Related?

In the past week or so I have had multiple Blue Screens of Death with various messages.

System service exception, DPC watchdog violation, DRIVER IRQ not less or equal, USBPort.sys,
K modem not handled, Memory management error.

These files have been identified.
USBPort.SYS
ntoskrnl.exe
hal.dll
igdkmd64.sys
NETwbw02.sys
Dxgkrnl.sys

I've reinstalled multiple Acronis True Image 14 images performed every several days since March 3 with each re-installation having been created earlier than the one I was replacing. All were complicated by the BSOD. The image I am using now was created March 9 and has exhibited multiple BSODs. The 1st BSOD that I am aware of appeared after March 20[SUP]th[/SUP] although the dumps suggests and may indicate some earlier BSODs.

Memtest86 was negative 1.5 passes over about 2 ½ hours. I have reinstalled each USB driver in Device Manager. A 3 second chkdsk on the C:\ SSD was negative. SFC negative. Speccy did not suggest temperature problems. The most recent BSODs do not list the USBPort.SYS. if that suggests that reinstalling the USB drivers helped.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on what you've been doing - please provide more details.

Frankly, the systems that you describe are suggestive of hardware problems (although low-level drivers can behave similarly).
Please try these hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

Only 45 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 56 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Is there any particular reason that you're not using UEFI or Secure Boot?

Have you ever tried reinstalling the OS fresh (NOT using an Acronis image)?

What version is your Acronis? Are you sure that it's compatible with Win8.1?

Have you ensured that you have the latest firmware installed on your SSD?

This device is disabled in Device Manager:
Microphone (Realtek High Definition Audio) SWD\MMDEVAPI\{0.0.1.00000000}.{71EF9712-050E-41B9-B218-6AAFDD0C4141} This device is disabled.
Is this deliberate? If so, why?
Please enable the device and update it's drivers. Then, if so desired, feel free to disable it again.

Out of 12 memory dumps there were 7 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized. i5 and i7 processors can be "auto-overclocked" by using Intel's TurboBoost feature. If so, it's safe to disregard this caution.

Western Digital software on your system contains a driver from 2008 that's known to cause BSOD's. Please uninstall the Western Digital software and see if that helps.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

UNINSTALL THIS ONE - DO NOT update it!!!!

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

I have been learning and trying to understand and to use the information you sent, which is outstanding and which I really appreciate. This is above and beyond any help that I’ve ever received before.

I have been doing many of the things you suggested, but because of recurring BSODs I had continued to install increasingly earlier created Acronis installations and the one that I’m currently running was created March 6. . This was before I had installed more than the basic programs that I’ve used in a similar computer for years. In spite of this, I have had multiple BSODs.
I have not been able to attach images of a Windows mini dump file, a Windows event and BlueScreenView report which I think show the same thing, which is that there were problems and events that occurred prior to the date my computer was 1[SUP]st[/SUP] received by me, which was March 3.

Windows Minidump indicated 4 .dmp files dated 21 through 25 February. The Event Viewer indicated multiple warnings and errors in February, the month before my computer was sent. The BlueScreenViewer showed the 4 .dmp files associated with the BSOD messages which I indicated before and seen in the Event Viewer. If you need to see these you will have to tell me how to attach them.

However, 12 to 15 hours of Memtest 86+, and multiple hard drive tests did not indicate a problem.
The company that I purchased this from stated:

”Then, every notebook is tested no less than three times, burned in and tested again before finally being hand checked by our technicians before the final shipment to our customers. All notebooks can be sold as custom configured only.”

Remember many of the BSOD events don’t show because this backup was created March 6 and installed April 3.

Did this testing not indicate problems (presumably hardware) that were not appreciated prior to my receiving the device?

BSOD's occur for 3 general reasons (in this order):
- 3rd party driver problems (more than 90%)
- hardware problems (less than 10%)
- Windows problems (less than 1% - presuming that the system is up to date on ALL Windows Updates)

The symptoms that you have described (and that we have observed) look to be this:

Hardware errors can occur at any time. I have seen them in brand new systems and I have seen them come up shortly after purchase. This doesn't mean that your system has hardware issues, it simply means that the errors follow a pattern (actually a lack of a pattern) that is usually indicative of one of those things that I mentioned above).

Finally, BSOD's can have simple causes (caused by one driver), or they can have BSOD's that are caused by multiple contributing causes (caused by multiple drivers). We may remove one cause, but the BSOD's may still continue - so we try not to reinstall anything until the problem is solved. And, at times, removing the BSOD cause(s) will leave you with other problems (such as black screens or system hangs) - which are a part of the contributing problems also.

Remove the Acronis program for now. That will tell us if it's contributing to the BSOD's. Feel free to reinstall the latest, Win8.1 compatible version after the system has been stabilized.

Uninstalling the Western Digital software is also essential - as the wdcsam64.sys driver is known to be associated w/BSOD's on Windows systems.

The USBXpress Development Kit has also been associated with BSOD's in the past - so remove that also.

Complete the hardware diagnostics (the video tests, Prime95, CPU stress tests, etc) and let us know the results.

Attempt to update the drivers that I have mentioned, and check on the compatibility of your current drivers with Win8.1
If you have issues and can't complete some of the things - let us know and we'll proceed from there.

The stuff that I posted was extracted from the reports that you posted. The stuff in code boxes and the driver info is from the memory dumps that were included in the reports.

The average BSOD topic takes 2 pages of posts to finish (either it's fixed or the owner has given up)
The difficult one's can take 5 or 6 pages to finish. Please be patient. If you're facing a time limit (such as a return policy or a warranty expiring) please let us know so we can make suggestions that will help.

Thank you for all the good information. I want to tell you what I think may have happened. Early on the mini dump and blue screen identified USBPort.SYS, and I did remove it.
Later, as you suggested dcsam64.sys driver was removed. In order to do this I had to attach my 1[SUP]st[/SUP] Passport external drive which probably goes back to at least 2011 if not 2010. On several occasions I have had several USB devices attached at one time using all 4 USB ports. I don’t think I’ll do that again. Anyway, all the hard drive tests that you suggested and the memtest86+ , along with the intrinsic Windows memory tests were all negative.

I finally broke down and reinstalled Windows and I’ve not had any problems or blue screen abnormalities since that time. You indicated that after the offending driver was removed, one can still be left with problems and I think that maybe what happened to me.

'I really appreciate the advice that you gave me. I learned quite a bit, but I hope I never have to use it again, still it’s very good to know all that stuff is available to me.
