BSOD When Launching TreePad, Given Driver Error Code

The BSOD displays "system_service_exception (win32k.sys)" when I launch TreePad Business Edition (Treepad Business Edition: All-in-one Organizer, PIM/database, Word Processor, notes manager, search engine, Web site generator and much more!) from the PC or SD card; same result in XP or W7 compatibility mode. After searching for the error code, I am reading this relates to a hardware driver.

TreePad shows W8 is supported on the home page (Treepad: Personal Information Manager, Notes Organizer, Word Processor, PIM, Database and more!) but not on the Business Edition page. As well, while running the install wizard, W8 is listed as compatible. Attempts to contact TreePad about this issue and to verify supported Windows' versions have been unsuccessful.

As suggested, attached is the ZIP file created by SF_Diagnostic_Tool.

Thanks in advance for your time and assistance!

Hi

There is only a single crash dump can be seen on the diagnostic report so it is not possible to find a pattern in the crashes. If you are using CCleaner or Windows disk cleanup, stop using them as they will delete the dumps to save disk space.

It looks like Sophos Antivirus might playing a role in the crashes.

Code:
ffffd000`389e0848  fffff800`01949c82Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\savonaccess.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for savonaccess.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for savonaccess.sys
 savonaccess+0x18c82

Driver Reference Table - savonaccess.sys

Please uninstall Sophos completely as a test and try to launch Treepad. If the BSOD reappears, rerun the toll and upload a new diagnostic report.

Hi Anshad, thanks for the quick reply!

This is a work PC so I will not be able to uninstall Sophos but I may be able to disable it. Otherwise, all I can do is try to start it several times to see if a pattern emerges which will be helpful.

Hi

I am not asking you to abandon or permanently disable Sophos. Just uninstall it and run the program. If AV is not the root cause, you can re-install it any time.

If simply disable an AV, it's resident shield will be the only component which is deactivated. All kernel mode drivers installed by the AV will be still active on the machine.

My original post stated the TreePad software was installed on the PC, it was not. It was only on the SDcard. I just realised this so I installed in on the PC and tried to run the app but with the same results. I attempted to run it a hand full of times, all with the same results as with the SDcard, BSOD.

I attached a new file with all the failed run attempts.

Hi

There are five new dumps in total which shows exactly same stop code and stack activity. Call stack of every single dump looks exactly like the below example.

Call Site
nt!KeBugCheckEx
nt!KiBugCheckDispatch
nt!KiSystemServiceHandler
nt!RtlpExecuteHandlerForException
nt!RtlDispatchException
nt!KiDispatchException
nt!KiExceptionDispatch
nt!KiDivideErrorFault
win32k!MAPPER::bNearMatch
win32k!MAPPER::bFoundExactMatch
win32k!ppfeGetAMatch
win32k!LFONTOBJ:: pfeMapFont
win32k!RFONTOBJ::bInit
win32k!GreGetTextMetricsW
win32k!NtGdiGetTextMetricsW
nt!KiSystemServiceCopyEnd
0x0

It seems that Win32k.sys is loading font is the last stack activity prior to the crash each time. If you recently installed some new fonts, try removing/deleting them. Also try restoring the default font settings.

1. Open Fonts by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Fonts.
2. In the left pane, click Font settings.
3. Click Restore default font settings.

No dice! Did you want another dump for after I reset to default?

Do you think it may be the default font TP is trying to use? Maybe there is a way to change the default within files or install the missing font.

Hi

21 days trial version of TreePad works in my Windows 8.1 x64 without issues. So the problem is definitely with your OS. But i can't understand why the fond loading causes BSOD for you. May be John Carrona ( aka "Usasma" ) will be able to find it.

Gotta wonder about PrimoPDF.
As Anshad showed, the error has something to do with ATMFD.DLL - which is related to Adobe fonts.
And, from what I can see, the only product that would use Adobe technology is PrimoPDF (a SWAG on my part :0)

But, as this is only a guess on my part, I'd suggest running Driver Verifier according to these directions: Driver Verifier Settings

Your RIM (Research In Motion - usually associated w/a Blackberry) drivers date from 2008.
Please (temporarily) uninstall the programs related to this and test for BSOD's
When done, please download the latest, Win8.1 compatible version from the RIM website

Your Juniper drivers date from 2009.
Please (temporarily) uninstall the Juniper programs and test for BSOD's
When done, please download the latest, Win8.1 compatible version from the Juniper website.

Your ZTE Mobile Broadband drivers date from 2011
Please (temporarily) uninstall this program and remove the device from your system to test for BSOD's
When done, please download the latest, Win8.1 compatible version from the ZTE website.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Thank you again for the continued assistance!

I successfully uninstall RIM soft, ZTE Mobile Broadband, several other applications I am not using and the PrimoPDF. I research all the others, most without success, and ran the updates on the one's I found. The CyberLink product has an app to install their latest and it returned no newer version available. I also installed Dell's update tool and installed several BIOS, firmware, drivers, etc.

After each install/update, I ran cCleaner's registry check and repaired and thing remaining, however I did not clean any files from the system. I then rebooted, ran cCleaner again to verify it didn't find any other issues and tried TP. Each time I received BSOD.

I attached the latest ZIP file.

I have had problems using registry cleaners over the years. Overuse tends to compound errors in the registry and cause further problems. I'd strongly suggest that you not use any registry cleaners and let the registry take care of itself.

The latest memory dumps are all the same - and each one points at a core Windows driver.
If this was the actual problem, I'd think that you'd see many other problems other than the BSOD's.
As such, we'll have to dig a bit deeper for the cause.
Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

The Juniper driver is still outdated. Can you remove the Juniper program from your system temporarily (for testing)?

Don't worry about the other 2 drivers for now (the Sonic and Cyberlink one's). They aren't frequently seen as causes, so we'll avoid them for now.

Interestingly, most (if not all) of the BSOD's occurred in PROCESS_NAME: TreepadBiz.exe
Yet, Anshad Edavana has confirmed that the program works well on their copy of Win8.1
As such, I'd have to wonder if this is an incompatibility between TreePad and another program on your system.
Maybe Anshad Edavana can compare their program list to yours in order to help identify them?

In the event that Driver Verifier points to TreePad, then I'd suggest removing TreePad and then running Driver Verifier again.
Good luck!

I usually wonder about USB audio devices - and see that you have the driver for one on your system.
Try removing that (as a test) to see if helps.
This is just a hunch on my part.

Another hunch is Bluetooth. It's had issues w/Win8.1 when using Win8 drivers.
See if you can update your Bluetooth drivers to see if it helps.

Interesting events as I am no longer getting BSOD when opening TP. Not directly due to troubleshooting but because I entered my registration key. However, TP still doesn't open. I can see it running in Task Manger and it is using about 25% of CPU capacity but it never shows up on the screen or on the Taskbar with a block around the icon; I have TP pinned to the Taskbar.

After adding the key, I attempted to complete the additionally suggested steps by removed/deleted/uninstalled/updated the following:
- Deleted RIM file & directory as I have already uninstalled and I know longer use a Blackberry;
- Uninstalled Juno Pulse & Juniper VPN;
- Uninstalled Dell Display Link;
- Uninstalled IDT Audio Driver;
- Turned off Bluetooth from starting at boot;
- Ran Dell Update Tool and installed updates for:
-- BIOS;
-- NIC driver;
-- Bluetooth driver.

After each step, reboot and open TP. Each time it was running in Task Manager but nothing on the screen. I let it run for over 15mins at one point and still nothing. I also tried compatibility for W8 & W7, still no luck. The first time I ran Compatibility Troubleshooter, a previous instance of TP was still running, thus when I started a second instance, it went to BSOD. At no other time did it go to BSOD.

The only step I haven't taken is running Driver Verifier due to the risks of problems. If after reviewing the latest file attached, Driver Verifier is the only option remaining, I will consult our IT department for permission but I hope something else can be tried pops up.

Thanks again for everything!

Juniper stuff was present in the 4/3 memory dump at 18:00 (6pm)
But not in the 4/3 memory dump at 21:00 (9pm)
This suggests (IMO) that Juniper wasn't to blame in this instance.
But please don't reinstall it just yet (in case it contributes to, but doesn't directly cause the BSOD's)

Can you uninstall TrueCrypt in order to see if this is the cause? (if it doesn't stop the BSOD's, then feel free to reinstall a fresh copy of the latest available version from the TrueCrypt website).
Interestingly, it is possible to run TrueCrypt in "portable mode" - which may help in testing for problems with it.
I am focusing on TrueCrypt as there are file system filter drivers in the raw stack text (something that TrueCrypt uses)

I also see evidence of a Sophos driver (savonaccess.sys) in the 18:00 memory dump's raw stack text. The driver is present in all of the previous memory dumps also.
I'd suggest removing Sophos Endpoint Security (temporarily) in order to test it. Make sure to enable Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall once Sophos is uninstalled. Feel free to reinstall the latest, Win8.1 compatible version of Sophos once the system has been stabilized.

We can attempt to manually remove the PxHlpa64.sys and CLVirtualDrive.sys drivers. But the last time I tried the PxHlpa64.sys removal - the system became unbootable and had to be restored in order to work. FWIW - I haven't seen a lot of problems with these drivers - so I don't feel that they are as likely to be at fault as the other drivers that I have mentioned.

Go ahead and ask IT about using Driver Verifier.
For added safety prior to running Driver Verifier, please do these 4 things:
1 - backup all your data (maybe get IT to make a complete system image so that you can set your system back that way)
2 - create a system restore point using System Restore
3 - Create a Recovery Drive - Go to the Start Screen and type in "recoverydrive" (one word, without the quotes). That will start the recovery drive process. You will need a USB drive of at least 512 mB - and all data will be erased off of it. If copying the recovery partition the drive size will be much, much larger (16 - 32 gB drive required).
4 - Test the Recovery Drive to make sure that you can get to the System Restore entry when you boot from the disk/drive (you may also want to try actually using System Restore to make sure that it works)

In the event that you are not able to boot into Windows after running Driver Verifier, then boot to the Recovery Drive and use it to set the system back to the restore point that you created prior to starting Driver Verifier.

@usasma Thank you for this input.

Just to be clear, my PC is no longer going to BSOD. Since adding the software key, when I select TPB, it is running in Task Manager (TM) but never actual appears on the screen.

  • I uninstalled Juniper Juno Pulse VPN, tested and TPB is still not appearing although running in TM.
  • I researched TrueCrypt and is hasn't been updated since November '12. It is known to cause issue in W8 & W8.1. I uninstalled withe same result.
  • I completely uninstalled CyberLink's products and then verified CLVirtualDrive.sys was no longer in Drivers directory it was in. Test TPB, no change.
  • Given your warning about PxHlpa64.sys, I didn't attempt to remove it and I haven't been able to find a newer version.
  • As for recommendation to uninstall Sophos due to its savonaccess.sys driver, I did not attempt this as I would have to get our IT department involved to reinstall and I want to do all I can before doing so. There is a new version of Sophos to address W8.1 issues; IT has no plans to update at this point. I cannot find anything on their website showing if this driver is updated or not. Searching for the driver I only found four discussions. This discussion about an XP system states the driver can be renamed. However, there are four instances I found in my search of C:\:

    View attachment 41740

    and the one instanced in the registry:

    View attachment 41741

    So I am not which direction to go in...
  • Again, I am delaying the Driver Verifier until I am left with this as my a final option.
  • Finally, due to Heartbleed SSL issue, and our Surface tablet's touch not working, I was able to convince IT to try the latest Juno Pulse version 5.0R3.1; 4.0R9.2 address Heartbleed but not W8.1. Tested TPB with the same results.

So, one last dump attached before getting IT involved.

Cheers!

Using the information on the Sophos forum. I tried the following:
  • Disabled Sophos services and disabled from Windows startup. Tested TPB and no change.
  • Renamed all four savonaccess.sys to savonaccess.sys.off. Tested TPB and no change.
  • Uninstalled TPB, rebooted, downloaded another copy, installed, entered my registration key, it tried to load and BSOD.
  • After reboot, tried TPB again, the key didn't take on previous step so I entered it again. BSOD.
  • Tried a third time, the key took but still went to BSOD.
  • Verified Sophos still wasn't running. Searched registry for instances of TPB and delete two referencing the previous directory.
  • Reboot and tried TPB again, BSOD.

Create a new dump and attached.

On another note, I had our IT department load a VMware W8 image and TPB runs in trial & after registering. We are going to try a W8.1 image after the holidays.

I've been struggling to avoid a "wipe and reinstall" as it's (IMO) a poor way of solving your problem. It's like solving a problem with bald tires by buying a new car - it works, but you're really not fixing anything.

That being said, it will let you work with TPB without errors, so you may want to give it a try.
Some BSOD's (and other problems) can be due to problems between different softwares - so it may be that TPB works well for a while and then it starts having problems because of things that are added to the system. Please make System Restore points before each software install - that way you'll have something to go back to if it does start causing problems again.

The memory dumps are essentially the same.
They still have the Juniper stuff running - but we're not sure if Juniper is involved in the crash, or is just a byproduct of it..

IMO it's time for Driver Verifier. And, if IT's going to wipe and reinstall the system - then you don't have much to lose by trying it.

Whatever you decide to do - Good luck!
