Hi all,

Haven't been able to resolve my BSOD using various forums and searches.

I suspect it has something to do with USB devices or drivers.

What i have done so far:

Running Windows 8.1 64bit with latest updates
downloaded all the latest updates for drivers from the Acer website. I
Laptop is Acer Aspire V3

BSOD seems to come on when i have a USB device plugged in, usually occurs randomly not at any specific timeframe.
I have tried all the USB ports, some are USB 3.0 and 2.0, i have also tried plugging in a USB hub into the various slots and using the hub to plug in a mouse. This seemed to work for a few days and BSOD came back.

Laptop runs fine without any usb devices plugged.

Hope someone can help!

John

Hey John,

Is your computer an Aspire V3-772G? I ask because I believe this to be your board: Acer | Download
In which case, it would be a good idea to visit and ensure that all your drivers are up to date. However, your issue seems to be caused by a USB driver, and it doesn't list it there? I'll post back after I gathered more info

Ah, I'm going to have you update chipset and BIOS. Chipset is listed on that website, and the BIOS is on the tab at the top(ish). Either the BIOS comes downloaded with an update tool, or you'll need to find a utility to update it. Start there. Your BIOS version is 1.11, and the latest is 1.13
For the chipset, make sure you selected the correct OS version (WINDOWS 8.1 x64)!

Also John, did you get a USB 3.0 driver that came with your computer? You might not have, and might not even need it. Read this about it: Intel® USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver — Where is Intel® USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller driver for Windows 8*?

And make sure you install that SATA driver from the website also, and recheck that you are using the correct download for windows 8.1 x64 from the dropdown menu on the website.

*EDIT* Added this from Microsoft so that you might understand the issue better:

Hi,

The attached DMP file is of the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1) bugcheck.

This indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL that was too high.

A driver tried to access an address that is pageable (or that is completely invalid) while the IRQL was too high. This bug check is usually caused by drivMODULE_NAME: USBXHCI

IMAGE_NAME: USBXHCI.SYS

FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: X64_0xD1_USBXHCI!Isoch_Stage_AcquireMdl+3a

BUCKET_ID: X64_0xD1_USBXHCI!Isoch_Stage_AcquireMdl+3aers

Windows 8 provides a new USB driver stack to support USB 3.0 devices. The new stack includes drivers that are loaded by Windows when a USB 3.0 device is attached to an xHCI host controller. The new driver stack maintains compatibility with the existing client drivers that were built and tested on earlier versions of the Windows operating system.

With this said, it's more than likely you are connecting a device in which is not supported by 8.1 and it causing crashes. What USB devices are you connecting?
And this from intel:
Solution:
Upgrade the BIOS to latest version. Get the latest version BIOS from your OEM. If the BIOS upgrade does not fix the issue, set the xHCI mode setting in BIOS to enable.
Before I do anything else here, I'll wait for your response.

Hi Dusty,

I've updated the Bios.

The Chipset, there is no option to select windows 8.1, however in the system requirements it does list windows 8. I've attached some screen shots.

I tried the Intel USB 3.0 link you sent, it came back with the following: Intel® USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver — Where is Intel® USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller driver for Windows 8*?

Not sure what came with the laptop, just downloaded all the drivers from the website. Originally we did a fresh install as I replaced the HD with 7200rpm one. Then the BSOD started to appear never used the machine in its original state before that), tried various things, then took out the HD just in case it was causing the issue.

New dump files attached.

I have attached a Logitech M100r mouse to the USB 2.0 Slot and far there has not been a BSOD, although sometimes I could be working for a few hours before it surprises me.

Hey mate,

Sorry, I may have confused you. I have updated previous posts, but I'll sum up here. Windows 8 includes USB3.0 drivers, so you shouldn't need to install them.

The problem should only be with USB 3.0 ports, I believe. I don't think USB 2.0 is affected...

If the BIOS update (and a restart!) did not work in solving the problem, you may actually need to go into the BIOS and follow this advice:
Solution:
Upgrade the BIOS ... does not fix the issue, set the xHCI mode setting in BIOS to enable.
NOTE! that xHCI = Extensible Host Controller Interface

I see what you mean. There are no SATA and Chipset drivers for 8.1, only for 8. Give them a try anyway if the previous methods did not work for you. If something says 'repair' or 'newer version already installed', don't worry about them.

Did I pretty much answer your questions? Hope it works out for you. If not, I'll be here for more :D

Hey Dusty,

thanks for the prompt responses and suggestions. I run a different setup at home, no dramas here.

When get back in the office, I'll keep the above in mind.

The issue was occurring on all the USB ports including 2.0.

After the bios update, there were not more BSOD occurring. only monitored it for 30mins. It will get a good workout tomorrow and hopefully the bios update did the trick, if not, I'll move onto the next steps.

Really appreciate the support and patience.

John

Hey Dusty,

looks like your efforts of magic are paying off for me. its been 7hrs since the mouse has been plugged into the USB 2.0 without the BSOD. I've just switched to to the 3.0 port, shall see how that goes.

Well done, your technical expertise is very much appreciated.

Yes its very exciting for me as well!
