My computer has been experiencing frequent BSODs for the last two or so months, at first I thought it was an isolated issue but now it's become so frequent that it's becoming impossible to do anything. Now I have not installed anything unusual or done anything out of the ordinary during that time period so I assume maybe it's a windows update or a driver update. The little helpful information I've managed to dig up suggests that it may be a driver issue, so i downloaded the latest graphics card update (my PC crashed while trying to install it the first time, of course) and installed it. And there has been absolutely no change.

The times that this happen are completely random, sometimes while browsing the internet, sometimes on startup and sometimes when the computers doing nothing at all, then I walk in the room and hey BSOD! So there is absolutely no pattern as far as that goes.

Now I've only finally got around to asking for a solution myself, because today when i tried to launch windows not only did I get a BSOD that restart the computer, the computer then procceeded to fail to launch 3 times in a row. One message I was presented with was something along the lines of 'page fault in nonpaged area' (forgive me I didnt have a pen handy) So it appears as though the computer is getting worse despite no reason for doing as such?

Anyway if you guys have any suggestions I would be grateful however, right now I would really like to avoid downloading any third party software, because honestly the PCs pulling enough stuff now without foreign intervention. Oh and if you are going to tell me to do something please explain it as though I am an idiot (because I am) because it will save me asking you how I have to do so afterwards.

Thanks.

(Oh and right now I can't actually sort through files to look for a fix because when i try to open a folder the toolbar flashes and then nothing happens)

Is it fine if I just upload the dump files or do you want me to go through with using this application?
To update, I've tried a whole host of things since I have posted one such was using the windows memory tester which showed up with zero problems. I've considered using the driver verifier tool that windows provides yet from the research I've done on it shows that it can have unstable results.

EDIT: Instead of waiting for a response I just posted a rar of my dump files anyway.

More EDIT: Oh and chief I've read through your posts responding to similar questions of this nature and I know the first thing you are going to say is : Uninstall Norton.
But I've been using the program long before the issues started, and more to the point I'm using it on my other computer and am currently experiencing no issues. So there honestly has to be another explanation.

You said it. I didn't. :) (Doesn't mean advice is wrong. Good job.) Machine will be fine after. Use the removal tool they offer after, for good measure and don't forget about the Defender and Firewall services.

Classic Norton 360 (full circle then crash lol) bringing down the storage example. (Fine job @ them too, heh.)

Ah crap yeah, just crashed then and yeah.... symfa64.sys was shown on the blue screen.
Didn't want to have to do this after not having any issues with the software on previous machines... but uh it's driving me nuts.
I'll have to test it out tomorrow as it's quite late at the moment.

How reliable do you think the windows antivirus and firewall services are?

Oh and thanks for being so swift and with your responses, it's greatly appreciated.

They can not crash Windows, so 100%. You're welcome.

No.

Here is the key to success:

Use the removal tool they offer after, for good measure and don't forget about the Defender and Firewall services.

From your latest crash dump:

Code:
SYMDS64 SYMDS64.SYS
SYMEFA64 SYMEFA64.SYS
SSYMEVENT64x86 SYMEVENT64x86.SYS

^^^There are other Norton drivers too. Just showing some as example, and being brief about it. The tool will fix it all.

If the machine is behaving too erratically to get the job done, look at Brink's tutorial on here about how to get to safe mode and use the tool there instead.

Weird... sorry I should have been more clear. The restart actually happened as a result of the final stage of using the norton removal tool.
So After using the Norton removal tool, the PC crashed because of Norton.

.... thats pretty funny.

I got another crash, and yeah I used the removal tool and everything. Even did a search for some problem files such as symefa64.sys. Nothing showed up, it's gone as far as I can tell, yet I'm still getting crashes.

This happened when doing a full system scan using windows defender.
I walk out of the room, come back and surprise! It crashed.

IF you have Cyberlink PowerDVD installed, leave this file alone:

Code:
7: kd> lmvm rikvm_38F51D56
start end module name
fffff880`0a8b6000 fffff880`0af00000 rikvm_38F51D56 (deferred)
    Image path: \??\C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\rikvm_38F51D56.sys
    Image name: rikvm_38F51D56.sys
    Timestamp: Thu Apr 05 07:15:12 2012 (4F7D7EC0)
    CheckSum: 00025DD4
    ImageSize: 0064A000
    Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4

If you do not have Cyberlink PowerDVD installed, it is malware.

In this case, delete the driver, then delete the subkey for it in Regedit when you locate it, here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services

When done with that (or not doing anything at all for it) -

open an elevated command prompt. Run this command for every storage partition you have, changing C: to match the drive/partition letter for each run:

chkdsk /r C:

Should be ok after.

For good measure, update storage driver from Intel.com:

iaStorA iaStorA.sys Sat Sep 01 21:01:24 2012 (5042AFE4)

Cyberlink is the default application all my DVDs open with so, I assume that it's on the level.

And to follow I am a little confused by this -

open an elevated command prompt. Run this command for every storage partition you have, changing C: to match the drive/partition letter for each run:

chkdsk /r C:

I've never needed to open command prompt in win 8 - so that's probably the first step but, what exactly do you mean with the second part. I don't really understand command prompt, if anything it terrifies me that I'll do something wrong so whats this about partitions and changing drives and such? Am I supposed to change things to the D drive? How do I know what?

Okay so I followed your instructions and I received this message
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts"
is - is that normal? I mean I could just say yes, but what exactly could be preventing it.

UPDATE: I went ahead, restarted. Computer froze on restart disk not checked.

Further update: did it again, the restarting logo froze - but then the computer restarted anyway. But it didn't do the checkdisk. I think my restart is broken. And yeah I've turned off "fast start up"

I tried right clicking the C drive going to tools and doing a check through that, but it yielded no results.

Well, I feel a little silly. Now while I'm still having issues restarting the PC which rules out chkdsk. (I made another thread on the fact that the PC does not restart correctly, which is something that predates this issue by about a year I just never bothered to do anything about it) As mentioned before I tried right clicking the C drive going to properties > tools > check. With no results, but what was dumb of me is I did not check the D drive. Which yielded an error.

It stated that two files occupied the same cluster, I'm going to take an uninformed guess and say that I probably have to try searching for another problem because that doesn't seem as though it would be THAT major.
Right?

EDIT: Okay I actually went to have a look in the event viewer, and a lot more than what was initially said was modified. A whole lot of changes were made to my driver directory. Which is odd as I updated it AFTER I started having problems.

I would like to perform the chkdsk through control panel to see if anything else comes up but I just can't at this moment. Would there be that many differences not found within the windows task?

It's probably a bit too early to be saying this for sure, but I have not experienced a BSOD in the last 1 or 2 days so, maybe something we did fixed it. I'll post an update at the end of the week.

Ah $#&%!

Got another bluescreen this time relating to fltmgr.sys. Which as I understand is related to windows security?
So basically if an antivirus performs a background task I get a BSOD.

I don't know what to do.

Okay, did it with the D drive, now whenever I launch windows the graphics card driver does not load properly (it takes a second boot to do so) thank goodness I have a second monitor because it doesn't even pick up my primary screen. In the device manager my NVIDIA Gforce GT 630 is giving me a big yellow ! and error 52. It was last updated on January 9th so it's not like a recent update caused anything.
So I'm guessing it fixed something in the NVIDIA directory which caused it to break everything. I'm updating the NVIDIA card to the latest driver now, which is unfortunately a BETA driver, but hopefully It will be able to recognize my monitor again once it's done.

Oh yeah everything is now also super low res.

EDIT: Actually I have a question, what would happen if I uninstalled my video driver? Would I just not be able to see anything ever again?
Because if this doesn't work I guess I'll have to start from scratch.

EDIT: Updated, working so far. Any ideas on why that happened?
