Black screen on start up after windows 8.1 upgrade

Hi there, I'm new to the forum so i hope this thread is where it should be. I believe this might be a BSOD issue but yet again I'm not computer wiz.

I've just upgraded from windows 8 to windows 8.1, via the Windows Store. Prior to upgrade i had no issues whatsoever with the windows 8, before the upgrade i ran the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant. And found only 3 softwares to have conflict with the upgrade, these 3 are as followed: Apple QuickTime, iTunes and Bitdefender Total Security - Version 17.15.0.68. I uninstalled both of the apple software's and upgraded the Bitdefender to a version compatible with Windows 8.1.

I had no issues with the download & installation of windows 8.1, however the instant between windows loading screen and the switch to user log in screen is blank/black for a good 3 minutes, if not more. Normally after the shut down screen the computer would power off completely, however now my computer screen is blank/black and the computer is still powered on for about 10-15 minutes, I know that it is on as all the fans/HDD LED are active. This time fluctuates and I'm not sure why. I've checked with windows update and no updates are available, all of my softwares (and third party applications) are up to date. On Microsoft Community forum and so on, all i can say is that there are many others experiencing a issue only with a blinking cursor and their circumstances are different so i don't believe its related.

I've updated my BIOS to the current version and my display driver and chipset are up-to-date, all drivers offered on the asus website, i even installed the realtek sound driver which i wasn't using previously. Reset BIOS, removed battery for CMOS, removed all components 1-by-1, ran CHKDSK no problem found, only standard keyboard/mouse/display connected, no change whatsoever!

I've tried safe mode and its the same, only the transition to logging in and shutting down have improved slightly. Tried clean boot at the result was the same. Checked the WER and found a lot of this "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE 0x0000009f". I've already run the SF diagnostic tool and will load the zip file here. Hopeful someone can help me out, as i rather not do a clean install of windows 8 and I'm not sure if restoring my pc to windows 8 before the upgrade will resolve the issue if it is driver related.

There's your problem right there. Logs or nothing like that tell me this. It's just something I know.

This below really needs to be removed for a stable machine, but if you really need this badly for something, you can instead try to update it or leave it be if there is no update, after you see how BitDefender removal fixes your shutdown issues. But at a very basic level, it needs to go:

Code:
0: kd> lmvm vuhub
start end module name
fffff800`01a4c000 fffff800`01a5b000 vuhub (deferred)
    Image path: \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\vuhub.sys
    Image name: vuhub.sys
    Timestamp: Fri Nov 16 10:31:13 2007 (473DB7C1)
    CheckSum: 0000C82F

    Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4

Driver Reference Table - vuhub.sys

USB was responsible for your crashes. Highly likely BitDefender as cause of that too (or the vuhub driver above). For good measure, update USB 3.0 driver from motherboard maker, if available and install any updates available to anything you connect to the machine by USB at all.

I was just reviewing the thread and wanted to mention something to ya.

A few months ago when I was actually using 8 on a machine (gasp!- hah), I upgraded it to 8.1 and got the black screen with cursor at boot. I forget the exact steps I did to fix it, but I think I used Task Manager (ctrl-shift-esc) to get a command prompt, then ran sfc /scannow command.

Others have fixed that issue with an updated video driver.

Just some good info for people, if needed.

Thanks for the reply, i"ll try to uninstall bitdefender and see if that resolves the issue. Also I just google that driver and realised its related to and probably installed when i attached printer to my router Asus RT-N56U. However there are no updates offered from the Vendor and I am unsure on how to remove it if it turns out uninstalling bitdefender hasn't resolved my issue.

I'll let you know how it goes with the removal of bitdefender. Thanks

Well it didnt go so well, when i uninstalled Bitdefender upon restart windows crashed and restarted itself and crashed a second time upon login screen "Bad_Pool_Header". Couldn't get into safe mode so i just used recovery and reverted back to before the uninstall.

what do i do now? I looked into my WER and there's nothing there about todays crash. probably because i restored it?

I'd remove the printer from the router and uninstall all printer-related software from the machine.

If issues persist, we can deal with them then by seeing new crash dumps.

If they do not persist, we can deal with getting the printer working well.

Things just got worst, even after i recovered to a previous restore point which was when i first upgraded. My computer couldn't load windows at all, no windows loading splash screen. Went straight to Blue screen with Error bad_pool_header and sometimes driver_corrupted_expool. After sometime windows loaded in the Recovery mode option (previously the F8), and i couldn't reset or use media to restore as i download from windows store and didn't have the ISO.

So i gave up and did a fresh install of windows 8 without Bitdefender and printer not connected at all. Problem improved slightly, the delay from loading to login is still taking forever . But shutting down now takes probably a minute or so, that's better than previously. So now what do i do? I've checked hardware connections and removed and re-installed every component, same no change. Did a CHKDSK again and no problem.

Msinfo32 shows error but it's totally different than before. I didn't think this would be possible after a clean install of windows? uploaded new file for you, maybe you can tell me if everything seems fine and its just me or what.

Thanks for all your help MasterChief

Yes. If you still have issues after BitDefender removal, please run the tool to post a new archive of logs, like you did in the original post.
