Video_tdr_failure, cannot boot, only external display

Hope you can help me out, I've searched for this problem but haven't found a thread which has exactly the same problem as mine so here goes:

I recently set up an external monitor to hook up to a Win8 upgraded Toshiba Satellite A300, as an extended desktop. Everything was working fine, until as I was browsing using Google Chrome, both the screens froze. Therefore, I switched off the laptop and attempted to restart, but the boot process only displayed on the external monitor, with a blank screen on my laptop. Then, a BSoD with the error 'video_tdr_failure' appeared, and now the boot process stalls at that stage, and I have to manually switch off to restart. I can still access the BIOS, but cannot boot into Safe Mode so far. I have attempted to change the display options in the BIOS, but to no avail.

Is my GPU buggered? I understand that I cannot replace it without replacing the motherboard on the A300. I haven't booted using a Win8 disk yet as it's at home (I'm at University), so can I attempt to save it using that if it's a software issue?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

0x116 or 0x117 stop errors are some of the more difficult ones to fix, since the potential causes are extremely numerous, and the driver is not usually one of them. (Unless we're dealing with an ancient version, here - which is doubtful.) I know a thing or two about it.

Um, tell you what. Is it possible for you to attach the hard drive to a desktop, easily?

How we can proceed depends on your answer.

Did you try booting without the external monitor attached?

No, your actual hardware is not damaged, but rather, it's fine. (Unless you know you specifically abused it somehow; then that could be another story entirely, hah.)

One further question: How is the air flow doing on machine? Fan(s) still blow air out at a decent pressure when necessary?

You could try removing the battery and unplug the machine for a minute or so. See if it boots at all then, too.

Thanks for your reply, it's nice to know that it's not a hardware issue!

Unfortunately I don't have access to a desktop - I guess I could bring it to a repair shop if it's imperative to sourcing the problem?

I have tried several times to boot without the external monitor attached, but the screen is always completely blank (except for a slight change in shade of black as it powers on!)

I've unplugged the laptop and taken out the battery for around 2 hours now, attempted to boot and nothing has changed!

The air flow seems fine, the laptop is always on a riser on my desk too, and I haven't noticed any change in the sound made by the fan recently either.

Hope this info is of use, and thanks again for your help!

Boot to Knoppix, which is a Linux live operating system. It will work without installing. Just simply boot to the burned .iso.

I'm almost positive that it has NTFS reading access, so you should be able to access the hard drive, and be able to access \Windows\Minidump folder.

Attach the files in there to a new post here.

You'll also be able to use Knoppix to delete driver files, if that is what we will need to do.

I've attached the contents of the Minidump folder (only one file).

I was only able to access the hard disk in read only mode as there was a hibernation partition I wasn't able to get rid of - what's the workaround for this if I will need to delete drivers? Sorry for my ignorance!

The good news is that there are a few obviously (to me) bad drivers on the system, so it is looking very strongly that this is only a software issue, as suspected.

They are:

The video driver itself is not up to date as much as I'd like, but we will leave it alone for now. If needed, we will turn our attention to doing something about that before you are able to boot to Windows again, but I suspect not.

If you have the Windows install DVD, you can use that to get a command prompt to be able to delete the files shown above.

The first command would be cd X:\Windows\System32\drivers (where x = the drive letter of what normally is C:)

Then del FILENAMEHERE.sys, obviously using the correct file name, each time for each shown.

Perhaps you can use my attachment to make a USB bootable key to be able to access the files. Not really sure, as I have not used it in ages. If not, and the suggestions above are not feasible, we'll figure something else out on how to proceed.

If you do get back to Windows successfully, we will then do some good driver work to fix the broken devices - AND - update the video driver.

Another suggestion is since you're at University, I am sure someone else around there has a desktop you can ask to attach your drive into, for a short period of time, to do the deleting work. Even one of the computer labs on campus might be willing to mess with it with ya to do this. The people working or running it are probably enthusiasts and would likely be glad to.

I've managed to delete all those files (after a few fails using cmd!), and have checked their deletion through Knoppix. I've attempted to boot, but nothing has changed! Really appreciate your time with this by the way!

Did you get another bsod at all, though?

It's of no bother whatsoever. If I didn't like helping out, I wouldn't be here doing it.

You could give this a little try.

Delete these two files for the video. Windows can boot well without them. If it does boot after, you can install the latest beta driver from April 2013 for it. I wanted to try simply giving you those two driver files to overwrite, but you'll have an even better chance without any drivers for video whatsoever at all (besides generic Windows one that it will use.)

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\atikmdag.sys

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\atikmpag.sys

If it still doesn't boot well (try safe mode too) - then try to update the firmware for it from Toshiba, to latest.

Good luck.

I deleted the files, and I'm able to boot normally (albeit only on the external screen of course). I attempted to install the April 2013 driver, but got another BSoD in the middle of the installation process...! Back to sqaure one so to speak with normal boot.

I have been able to boot into safe mode (with the -dag and -pag files in the drivers directory). If I delete them I can boot as normal, as above. I've attached the latest dump file if they're of any use.

What was the firmware you wanted me to update? I found firmware updates by Toshiba from 2009, those were the latest on the system.

We're getting somewhere then.

Download this and use it in safe mode to clean out all of the ATI/AMD files and settings:

Download Driver Fusion

Be careful NOT to check off the storage or chipset check boxes when using.

If it says it can't get rid of an item or two because it wants you to pay, you can delete what it is showing manually, yourself.

While doing that in Safe Mode - delete this very old audio driver too: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\xaudio.sys

and this very old one too:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\vna.sys

and one more:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mdmxsdk.sys

Uninstall Daemon Tools, Daemon Tools Lite or Alcohol - whichever you have.

Reboot to normal mode and install beta video driver.

If it all goes as planned, we'll fix all the other devices that need proper drivers now.

That seemed to sort out the problem of the BSoD at last, thanks very much for your help!

However, as you probably guessed, I still have no display on my laptop screen - there's a code 19 error (damaged configuration information in the registry) by the display adapter in Device Manager and it won't allow me to connect to another screen through WinKey&p. Next step?

You've installed the latest beta video driver already, I am guessing? (Probably just the wrong driver, if so. Have a link to what you installed?)

You're welcome.

Let's see the msinfo while I ponder it over a bit.

To post it, please type msinfo32 in the start menu, press Enter. File | Save on the opened screen. Zip or rar the saved file then attach it here.

It seems from the logs I've attached that the previous version is still there, even after deleting the driver files manually and running Driver Fusion successfully (It did say that there were some files that needed Premium to get rid of, but I could not figure out a list of these files in order to delete them manually?).

Version 13 is the one supposedly installed successfully by the ATI installer, according to System Information, version 8 is still there somehow!

This is the link to the April 2013 beta I tried to install.

You should have a folder C:\AMD with the new driver files in it, from the beta.

Right now in normal mode, uninstall the video driver software normally, using the uninstall programs list.

Boot to safe mode.

Open Device Manager. Right click on the ATI (or "Standard" entry in Display Adapters section.)

Choose Update Driver Software. Browse my computer. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse.

Navigate to C:\AMD\AMD_Catalyst_13.4_Legacy_Beta_Vista_Win7_Win8\Packages\Drivers\Display\W8_INF\

Double click on CL156445.inf then click OK (if needed) and continue installing until done.

Reboot to normal mode and keep your fingers crossed.

You should uninstall Driver Detective at anytime, too.

Intel's site is completely messed for drivers.

If those don't work out, try this: Download Intel PRO/Wireless and WiFi Link Drivers 16.1.5 Win7 32-bit - FileHippo.com

As you can see, the wireless is sharing the same IRQ with the video:

Code:
IRQ 5 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
IRQ 5 Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

The wireless driver you have now is old, and is likely bringing down the video with it.
