BSOD DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION all the time. Can't boot.

Greetings all

Recently my laptop started giving me the BSOD "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION", crashing / freezing the entire time and I even can't login anymore to Windows. I actually can't boot anymore at all at the moment. It's just stuck on this screen the entire time:

View attachment 34642

This is the normal start up screen (bootloader?) from Windows 8.1. Normally under the Windows logo there should appear circling dots. Now there only appears 1 or 2 dots and it freezes. It just keeps hanging there. The weird thing though, sometimes I do manage to get further than that screen. On very rare occasions, like once per day when it hasn't got any power for a while. When I did manage to get further though, I tried everything in the advanced boot settings like system restore, renew the PC, repair etc. All without success. I kept getting a message:

"There was a fault trying to restore / repair / renew the PC."

When I tried system restore, it said I had to do a chkdsk on my C: drive, but I can't get on my Windows. When I do manage to get to the point that I can enter my password, I get an error: (translated from Dutch)

"LogonUI.exe - Fault: The instruction on 0xa2c3b559 refers to memory allocation 0x00000008. A read or write operation to the memory has failed: written. Press OK if you want to terminate the program."

And after I click on the OK button, I have to log in again... Endless loop, with other words I can't login. I managed to get in once on Windows in safe mode though. I tried to disable everything that starts up when Windows starts, but then when I rebooted, same thing happened: stuck on the load screen. And now I'm still stuck there. Don't know what to do... Tried booting from USB, doesn't work. Stuck on the same screen :s Been quite a while since I got further than that screen.. Only once last 2 days, but got the same BSOD immediately after leaving that screen...

My laptop has quite a history btw. I had problems with the sleep mode from the beginning I bought it (september 2011), freezing and crashing etc after waking up. After a long time when I was really tired of this problem and after quite a lot of research and troubleshooting I got recommended to bring it back to the store for warranty. This was in september 2013. Unfortunately I had to return it 3 more times to the store that month:

First time I got it back: they replaced the hard disk -> problem still not solved, crashes even when not using sleep mode.

Second time: they replaced the motherboard -> problem still not solved.

Third time: they replaced the DC component on the motherboard -> problem still not solved.

Fourth time: they replaced the battery -> problem was still not solved, but I was really tired of it and I tried to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 in hopes it would fix something. (Orginally my laptop came with Windows 7, and every time I got it back they installed a clean Windows 7 on it, but since the problem still wasn't solved, I decided to give Windows 8.1 Professional x64 a try.) Unfortunately it kept crashing and freezing etc during the install. After a lot of patience and new tries, I surprisingly managed to get Windows 8.1 installed and weirdly enough, everything worked perfectly. Sleep mode worked, no crashes etc. But now 4 months later, everything is ruined again.

So yeah, I'm stuck at the loading screen and can't boot from an USB. Since I can't manage to get on Windows, I can't provide log files. Any ideas ?

PS: Sorry for the long text and thanks if you took the time to read it. :)

Try contacting the laptop manufacturer's support and explain to them all the issue's you had, along with the store repair's that were done and demand a replacement ***WORKING LAPTOP** immediately. Also, explain if they don't immediately replace it free of charge, they'll lose a customer and all news sources will be notified by you. Some time's you have to play rough to get result's.

Hey brkkab123, thanks for your reply. I could try that yeah, problem is though: my warranty is already gone for 6 months and it worked perfectly fine for 4 months. So I don't know what suddenly happened that made it broke again :s And I really need my laptop back as soon as possible, I got exams atm and I need some of my notes I made during classes :( So if anyone can think of a way to fix this, I would prefer giving that a shot first. :)

As soon as your exams are over do it. It's obviously some sort of hardware failure. Battery was a cheap fix (pc's take the same type as most watches do) . Hard drive was replaced, supposedly. It's obviously something with the motherboard or power supply. Possibly both. They need to replace it. You should have at least a year warranty on it, if you got it new.

They already have replaced the motherboard, and ontop of that new motherboard they have already replaced the DC component :/ So it would be strange that the motherboard would still be the issue, although it could be possible. Could it be that my charger / adapter from my laptop is the problem ? Don't know if that's possible. And well yeah, after my exams I could give them a call, but I would like to access my files on my laptop, since I need them for my exams. So would it be best to open my laptop and remove the hard drive and plug it in my desktop pc ?

It's kind of like when someone buy's a car and it turn's out to be a lemon. Your laptop, sound's like a lemon. Are you sure they replaced the part's or did they just tell you that and just attempted a repair on the old part's themselves. See that's where they have the customer. Notebooks aren't easy to get to all the part's, so you can write each part's serial number down. On a desktop pc you can do that. From all your issue's you've had since purchase, it doesn't sound like any part's were actually replaced.

Personally, I'd rent a laptop somewhere and make them fully replace your current one, with a different one. Then return the rented one. Use a 32gb or 64gb. flash drive and get the files you need off your laptop, before you return it to them. Then you can just plug the flash drive into the rented laptop to have access to what you need. Then when you get the replacement laptop, use the flash drive to get those file onto the laptop, but still keep them on the flash drive in case this ever happen's again.

Okay so I removed the HDD out of my laptop, and plugged it into my desktop. I managed to back-up my data, including dump and log files. I included the dump files out of the Minidump folder. Could anyone please analyse them and see if they contain anything interesting ? Thanks

Hi Glenn. Wise move on your part.

Update this from Intel:

Code:
HECIx64 HECIx64.sys Tue Oct 19 19:33:43 2010 (4CBE2AD7)

And uninstall Daemon Tools Lite, Daemon Tools or Alcohol - whichever you have. Replace with PowerISO.

Very important to update these drivers, if an update is available:

Code:
FLxHCIh FLxHCIh.sys Thu Feb 24 04:00:02 2011 (4D661E12)
FLxHCIc FLxHCIc.sys Thu Feb 24 03:59:52 2011

Hey MasterChief, thanks for your reply. Problem is I can't get on my laptop though. So should I manually remove daemon tools from my laptop's HDD when it's plugged into my desktop ? And same with updating the drivers ? Or how should I do this ?

I have a few ideas in mind. I'll let them marinate for the moment.

First, I'd like you to try something if possible.

Can you boot into safe mode, open an elevated command prompt and then run this command until completion?

sfc /scannow

When done, it should say if it fixed stuff or not. I'm just curious for now if it indeed does fix stuff or says everything was already well.

Let me know...

You're welcome.

Oh didn't see there was a new post because of the second page. Sorry for that. But nope, I can't manage to get in safe mode. It's stuck before I can even choose that. But I got tired of it, so I plugged my laptop HDD back into my desktop and formatted my laptop's C drive. After that I made a DVD with windows 8.1 on it since booting from USB didn't work. Unfortunately, it also crashes if I try to install it with the DVD. -.- So yeah, my last option before returning it to the store, is plugging my laptop HDD back into my desktop and try to install windows 8.1 on it via my desktop. Don't know if that will work though. But I'll let you know.

No, that is never the way to go about it. Windows needs and uses a wide range of drivers specific to each motherboard. That method is just asking for more trouble than its worth. (It's not impossible to work. Windows makes corrections after a spout of bsods from doing that - but it is just a true headache waiting to happen, no matter how successful the end result.)

I would check that the laptop bios is set to Optimized Defaults, then save. Before doing that, you might even see if you can update the firmware somehow, like by booting to a USB key or something. (Should not be necessary, but just a step in the right direction is all.) Then simply try installing Windows.

If there is an issue installing Windows like that, return the machine for a new one.

Well it was the last option I could do to be honost. And it worked, I could boot the laptop the first time without any problems. It configured the hardware automatically and I was able to log in etc. So I was like, nice! But then after installing windows updates and rebooting, same problem occured again: it's stuck on the same screen I posted at the start of this thread... Sigh.

Bios is set to optimized defaults btw. And already tried updating the bios once, didn't fix it either. So I guess the only option left is to return it.. Out of warranty though. But hopefully they'll do something about since it's still the same problem as when I returned it the first couple of times while it was still in warranty.

Will keep you posted.
