Solved Random BSOD - WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR

Hi,
I was using a Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) for some time on my Lenovo E531 laptop and it was just fine - no crashes, no problems. I made an upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit in the beginning of December and I am getting random BSOD crashes with WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR message. When I mean random - I mean like no matter what I am currently doing on the laptop, it happens in browser, in Word, in Visual Studio, sometimes while playing games and even while the laptop is in idle state. I tried to reinstall the system on freshly formatted partition and I did some hardware checks through BIOS-integrated hardware check features (that means RAM, HDD & PCI-E tests) -> no errors found. And because I had no problems on Windows 7, I guess (and I hope) it's software issue. Drivers are up to date from the Lenovo website and I have Nvidia driver from Nvidias website - crashes were there even while using older driver from Lenovo website. These BSODs usually happen 3-5 times a week. No overclocking or any "unofficial tweaks" used.

Here is the log from SF diagnostic tool. Thanks for you time!

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): [DEL] DuplexSecure - FAQ [/DEL] Link broken as of 21 Jul 2012
New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: Disk-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web.

Thanks for your analysis and advices, I've uninstalled the Daemon Tools and checked for the SPTD - it's removed. I am going to use my laptop as usual and if there is no more crashing in next few days, I'll mark this as solved. :)

Well… it seems like it wasn't because of Daemon Tools, today I had BSOD when laptop was in absolutely idle state… checked it with BlueScreenView app and it's same error like the one I've sent in the original post. Guess I am going to try to play with drivers and if it doesn't help, I'll have to go back to Windows 7. Too bad, Windows 8.1 is way faster. :-/

//UPDATE
Hm, now I realized, that touchpad driver didn't load up after system restarted… hm.

In most cases it takes several tries to nail down the cause. In some cases it takes even more.
The average BSOD topic goes 2 pages, with the difficult one's taking 4-6 pages or even longer.

Please zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with your next post (if you can't zip it, copy it to the Desktop and zip it from there).

If the subsequent memory dumps still indicate hardware, then I'd start with these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics There's no harm in starting them now, and it may make things quicker for you if you do.

I did some driver experiments, I've uninstalled audio driver by Lenovo (using default Windows drivers), reinstalled touchpad driver and updated the ethernet driver. Then I took a look into BIOS and there was "Load optimized OS defaults" checked, so I tried to disable it and even though I didn't notice any actual changes in laptops functionality (or speed), I had no BSOD since that (4 days now). It is still too soon to say that some of the changes mentioned above did help, but everything runs ok now. I'll give it few more days and if there are no more errors, I'll come by and mark this as solved. Otherwise I will follow your instructions. Still, thanks alot for your time, I appreciate that.

I was thinking positive, but maybe too much. Today I received one nice BSOD while I was browsing reddit with Chrome. I've checked it via BlueScreenViewer and it's still the same error. I provide zipped Minidump as requested and I am going to do these hardware tests tonight.

Have you run the hardware diagnostics that I requested previously? If so, what were the results? Here's the link in case you need it again: Hardware Diagnostics

Try running Driver Verifier - it may point to a driver that we don't otherwise suspect (but, most likely it will point to hardware also). Please follow these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Then:

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web.

I have run hardware tests - hard drive just once and it seemed fine. RAM was running overnight… no errors after seven hours of testing. Today I tried the Driver Verifier and it seems like we are getting close to the issue - first dumpfile it created wasn't pointing to anything (from my amateur point of view), but the second one seems interesting - it points to Intel WiFi Link Driver. So I guess that is the problem. Just to be sure, I send these two dumps zipped in attachements.

Don't forget to turn Driver Verifier off - otherwise the system may keep BSOD'ing!

I would suggest that you:
- visit the Intel Download Center ( http://downloadcenter.intel.com ) and get the latest, Win8.1 compatible driver for your Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2230 card (while you're there, also get an updated, Win8.1 compatible Intel WiDi driver).
- uninstall the current wireless drivers
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

A bit of a story is needed here (to clarify what we're doing).
Back when the STOP 0x124 error first came out (with Vista), BSOD analysts had many arguements about this error. Some insisted that it was a CPU problem, some insisted it was a purely hardware problem, and others insisted that it also could be caused by low-level drivers. Please note that we haven't addressed the possibility of higher level drivers - and we haven't attempted to classify wifi drivers as higher or lower level drivers.

Normally, Driver Verifier memory dumps that don't point at the same drivers are supposed to be hardware/low-level driver problems (with hardware being more likely). But, with these 2 memory dumps, there are signs of network drivers in each. And, there's also signs of some USB stuff (but we'll get to that later on)

The point here being that we're not real certain as to this being hardware, 3rd party drivers, or Windows - so this is going to take a while to figure out. The hardware diagnostics that you've completed only comprise a small portion of the hardware in the system. Finally, there are 3 general ways to attempt to fix Windows (SFC.EXE; DISM; wipe and clean install) - but Win8/8.1 have added Refresh and Reset (I don't believe that Reset is the same as a wipe and clean install - although others will disagree with me)

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Intel WiDi KMD (Wireless Display)
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=WDKMD.sys

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web.

In particular, be sure to install every single Win8.1 driver that Lenovo offers for this system.

It was crashing right after logging into the system with Driver Verifier on, so I had to do that through safe mode. I have never used WiDi so I decided to uninstall it permanently - my guess here is that it can't really make any issue, unless I don't want to use wireless display technology, right?

Anyways… I did update the wireless card with the newest drivers from the Intel website. Again, thanks alot for your help, if there was no forum and guy like you, I would just revert back to the Windows 7, which doesn't really meet my liking speaking of overall speed (compared to the W8/W8.1). :) I'll use the laptop as usual and monitor if the issue is solved.

//UPDATE: 6 days without a crash or any sign of struggle, so I guess the problem is solved. Thank you alot, you're awesome! :thumb:
