Solved 2x BSOD after updating Windows 8 to 8.1

After having updated 8 to 8.1 after official release some weeks my computer did not run well at all. In my post from 3 weeks ago (performance and maintenance) I reported doing a sfc/scannow in which corrupted files were found but unable to repair. Following the instructions on this forum I carried out a "online/clean-up/restorehealth" this was completed with the result "Result: The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption..."

Some days later my computer went into blue screen (BSOD) from which I was unable to get out of. Finally I took the only option open to me (as far as I knew/capabilities ) and used the Lenovo restore option, reverting back to Windows 8.

(This probably happened on December 10th since I have 2 Critical Kernal-Power 41 listed)

At first I did not want to update to 8.1 again, but in the end I did - about 5 days ago. This time I first contacted Lenovo about updating drivers. They told me to update the following (after installing 8.1):

Chipset: Intel chipset Driver for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) Version : 9.4.0.1022
Video: CPP2 AMD DISCRETE VGA CARD DRIVER for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) Version: 13.152
Audio: Realtek Audio Driver for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) Version: 6.0.1.7030
LAN: Realtek Lan Driver for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) Version: 8.018.0621.2013
STORAGE: Intel RST Driver for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) - Desktop Version: 12.8.0.1016

Which I did.

Today (20/12/13) the computer went into BSOD again (only not as serious as last time) and restarted.

Because I did not have time to read the BSOD text I have now d-activated the automatic restart (don't know if this is good or not - please advise?)

I have downloaded the Brink software and the zip will be uploaded - also what I hope is the correct Dump file.

The computer has a GERMAN Language system!

ADDITIONAL INFO

Please Note - I am a novice so the following might be completely wrong

POSSIBLE AREA OF SUSPICION

One thing I have noted in the two versions 8 and 8.1 is that of the - USB Disconnect Icon

In 8 this works immediately = (which means) when I click ob icon the small window showing me the USB connections which I can select opens immediately - and all USB connections are shown and I can select one and it is immediately free for disconnection (when not still being used)

In 8.1 this "does not" work immediately = you get a delay period with a whirring sound (computer working ) and after several moments the USB selection screen finally opens. Sometimes I have to click a couple of times.

Every day I charge a small MP3 player on my computer

In 8 this works without any problem = (this means) the MP3 blue light blinks while charging and turns to steady light when charged. It is listed in USB window and disconnects without any trouble immediately after pressing USB icon.

In 8.1 the MP3 is not listed in USB icon list (although the content file window of the MP3 has opened in main screen of computer) also I noted today that the charging of MP3 was sporadic = (this means)the blue MP3 light blinked for a while and then there was no light at all, but later it started charging/blinking again.

Lenovo do not offer a USB driver update for Windows 8.1

Computer is a Lenovo desktop H430, i3-3220 3.3, 1 T, 8 GB memory

***The BSOD is listed as 41 with (63) task category - what is 63 task category? What area does this cover? (USB?)

Plus

Malwarebytes Free was running a Full Scan at time of todays BSOD

I'm sorry that no one responded to your post.
My work increased my hours over the holidays - and that detracted from my ability to provide help here.

If you still need help, please post back and I'll respond within 24 hours.

The Event ID 41 is simply Windows' way of telling you that the system shut down and Windows doesn't know why.
This can be caused by a crash (BSOD), can be caused by holding the power button down to turn off the system, or can be caused by several other events.

The bugcheck code of 209 translates to hex 0xD1 - an STOP 0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error
While waiting for a reply, please run Driver Verifier according to these directions: Driver Verifier Settings

repeat of computer shutdown problem leading to first BSOD

Once again (this happened as first major problem in first BSOD - critical-services-failure and stuck in Blue Screen that only a restore to factory would fix) my computer last night took a very long time to shutdown. This morning I ran a sfc /scannow - and as last time - damaged files were found - but not reparable. Tried several more sfc /scannow - no change.

ran

  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Successful

Full CBS report:

unable to upload
500 - Internal server error. (still unable to upload due this errror)

Please note: I did the same (above) successful "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" (before my computer had its first BSOD after updating from 8 to 8.1) - two days later my computer went into Blue Screen "critical-services-failed" BSOD - that BSOD also started with problem of long shutting down of computer!

If this is in anyway related to the USB Icon disconnect problem (also fully reported on: 8.1 won't run on desktop without causing BSOD - Microsoft Community ) I am unable to say.

I have followed your link to Driver Verifier Settings I am not sure if my technicl capabilities are suited for doing this. I will re-read it again, and see if I could try this.

I fix the BSOD's first, then I work on the other stuff (like the USB problem)
Often the BSOD fix will fix the other problems.

As for the SFC.EXE issues - please post over in the Windows Update forums and follow their instructions for posting: Windows Updates & Activation - Windows 8 Forums
FYI - the CBS report may be too big to upload here.
1) Zip it up to see if that helps
2) If that doesn't, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link to itBut I leave that up to the helpers in the Windows Update forum - as I can't really read these reports well :(

As for the Driver Verifier instructions, just follow the instructions line by line.
If you run into difficulty with a line, post back and we'll go into more detail.

here is CBS in zip

8.1 does not have the "System Repair Disk
" option ???? (Using Driver Verifier i.....)

Have to admit I am not at all comfortable about doing this "Driver Verifier check" - although I can see why it might need to be done - my technical abilities with computer are not that high - its way above my head

1) - Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2) - Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
3) - Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
4) - Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Force Pending I/O Requests" and "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
5) NOTE:
"IRP Logging", if selected, is best analyzed by posting the Full/Kernel Memory dumps (zip them up and upload them to a free file hosting service and post a link to it on the forums).
6) NOTE:
"Special Pool" may be able to be used depending on amount of RAM and errors being seen. In situations with small amounts of RAM, DO NOT select it,

7) - Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

- I have numbered all - which ones and exactly what do I have to select ????
- and I will have to do it without "System Repair Disk

I would also like to thank you very warmly for taking time at Christmas to reply and help me - hope I did not get you into trouble, or spoil the Christmas dinner, or upset any kids

I will have to check on the System Repair disk for 8.1
I will do it tomorrow at work.

I will reply back tomorrow and will answer the questions that you have about Driver Verifier then.
I will wait until you're able to come back online for a response. I understand that the children come first (I have 2 children, 2 step-children, and 7 grandchildren).

The CBS log should go with your post in the Windows Update forums (link here: Windows Updates & Activation - Windows 8 Forums )

tried verifier - failed

I gave the Verifier a quick run - but was not successful

I need to know exactly what I should choose - unfortunately the Verifier is in German - and MS do not give a German version for the settings - just in English

From text link: Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Force Pending I/O Requests" and "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"

using snipping tool I have copied the computers Verifier in German . can you help?

I might know what
Low Resource Simulation is (please see: verifier setup2_is this low resource simulation -: this is the third photo down)
-is this correct?

But I do not know what
Force Pending I/O Requests is
????
Using the snipping tool shots, can you please tell me each step - what I should select (and what not!!)

For example is step 1 the top selection = Standard - or the second selection = User

When I know which and what to select I will give it another try when my son is here, so tomorrow or day after or so.

I did just check for any unsigned DRIVERS = the result was none (or no problem?)

Treiber = Driver

Although Lenovo support said I did not need to do a BIOS 8.1 update - it is looking like this should have been done ?????? As novice can I do this easily and safely? Although at the moment I am inclined to stick with W8

Computer is back with Windows 8 - running fine so far - although only a couple of software has been installed so far (Nightly, Bitdefender Free -McAfee Tool was used to remove installed trial McAfee first, and CCleaner). But all the other software ran on Windows 8 before without any problems (Although MS Word 2007 worked better in 8.1).

USB is not a problem MP3 Player charges okay, is listed and when USB icon is clicked window opens immediately - without any sound of computer working as in 8.1, disconnects when clicked on.

I guess it must be a driver problem with 8.1 - but...??? All available driver updates for 8.1 were installed!

This is a research project on your part now.
Just because you have the latest available driver doesn't mean that it's compatible with 8.1
So, start with the drivers listed in the memory dumps that I analyzed - and verify that the programs for each one of them are compatible with Win8.1

FYI - the Recovery Drive function in 8.1 is essentially the same as the Repair Disc function in 8 - the major difference being that in 8.1 you must use a USB drive - and you have the choice to include the recovery partition. If you don't include a recovery partition, then the drive is less than 512 mB in size.

Today I compared a System Repair disc from Win8 with a Recovery Drive from Win8.1
The first 2 levels of the directory structure are the same
The 8.1 files are slightly larger than the 8 files, but I'll have to work on them in detail to see exactly what the difference is (and I'm still working on the translation from Deutsch to English for Driver Verifier).
In the meantime, you can use the Recovery Drive in place of the System Repair disc.

Please run the data collection tool again - and let it run for at least 15 minutes (or until the tool itself says that it's done). Then zip it up and upload it with your next post.

While waiting, check in Device Manager to see if there are any devices with problems. In particular I'm looking for problems with the xHCI or XHCI controllers.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

To boot from the disk you'll have to press the boot menu selection key. On most Lenovo's I've seen that's the F12 key.

If it still doesn't work, then try this:
To access the Boot Menu:

  1. Open the Charm Bar by pressing Windows Key-C
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Click on Change PC Settings
  4. Click on General
  5. Scroll to the bottom and click on Advanced Startup -> Restart Now
  6. Click on Use A Device
  7. Click on Boot Menu
from this link: How to enter Setup Utility (F1) or Boot Menu (F12) on a Microsoft Windows 8 preloaded PC.

[Note: Had to search a bit but found out how this goes (there is no "General" option in 8.1 but is now under "Update and Recovery" and then "Recovery") (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/open-advanced-startup-options-windows-8.htm)]

The situation is this: I got hold of a Windows 8.1 repair iso which I burnt to CD and finally managed to start from CD.
After clicking on the option to start from DVD optical drive I was then told "to press any key..." which I did.

The computer worked for a very brief while and then went into the usual start up mode (White Lenovo name with dot circle below for loading) followed by the usual Windows account window.

That was it!

I have no idea what happened - or if anything took place - because I have no idea what a Windows 8.1 iso repair disc does!

All I know is that it was a very brief process?

Is this usual - did it do its work?

Or did it fail?

later update

because I felt there was no change to the problems with Windows 8.1, I just did another sfc /scannow

once again I am getting "files could not be repaired":

CSI 00000847 [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:36{18}]"Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB" of prncacla.inf, Version = 6.3.9600.16384, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type = [l:24{12}]"driverUpdate", TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch

here is the CBS

(There are no conflicts or warnings by the Manager and Drivers are said to be correct (latest) - including printer)

Ran a HealthRestore today = successful (but as you can see from this thread - in the past my computer has always crashed shortly after doing a "sfc /scannow" and then a "HealthRestore" !!!!! but I am hoping for the best this time!).

Copied from #12: "While waiting, check in Device Manager to see if there are any devices with problems.

1) in device manager there are no problems/conflicts shown and all drivers are reported as being up-to-date
2) both the above red marked drivers are no longer on the computer. Since there has been a new install of 8 and then 8.1 after last crash - these software (and others) have not been installed yet.

These may not have been actual drivers at the time, but are certainly not causing any problems now.

After reinstalling "8" I bought a driver software "PerfectUpdater" and ran this to check and install drivers. I am aware that for experts these kind of software might be frowned upon - but for a novice like me some help is better than without in understanding the complicated driver updating problem. As a kind of part security I also downloaded a Free driver update software "SlimDrivers" and double checked the update Driver lists from both - they corresponded. I am aware this gives no guarantee - but the best I could do! Device manager does not list any problems and says all drivers are the latest. I ran both software - double check - after updating to 8.1 and updated the drivers for 8.1. I also ran both software after plugging in both mp3 I recharge on the computer (one daily, the other occasionally)

It seems that the ISO disk didn't do anything for you.

If you wish to use driver update software, that is up to you. Most times I see software like this, it either misses drivers, or it doesn't even update them when it sees them. We can see what it's done after the next BSOD.

Since you've reinstalled 8 again, I'd have to suspect either a hardware or a compatibility problem.
Have you had any BSOD's since you reinstalled 8.1 again? Were they after the driver updating software was run?

In this thread besides the major problems/BSOD/crashes I have also mentioned the odd things that go on after updating from 8 to 8.1

I have used the snipping tool to capture a couple of these and also a camera when the snipping tool could not be used. I will post these here.

Capture 1) (window that opens for no reason) I get a window opening telling me that there is no CD/DVD in optical drive when I click on some actions - as in this case clicking on systems Snipping Tool

Capture 2) (in beginning mp3 is listed) After connecting MP3 to computer for charging it is usually in the USB ICON Disconnect list ("I " in list - Bottom right) - but later is not in list and often MP3 stops charging when this happens (but clicking on USB Icon will start the charging of MP3 once again - but does not get listed again - HOWEVER it is shown in MY COMPUTER Window !)

Capture 3) (later mp3 falls away from icon list....) In this capture you see mp3 (was "I") is not in Icon list but is listed/shown in My Computer Window (I)!

"D" My Audio is the second MP3 player
