Lenovo K450 Win8 Frequent BSOD

I have been chasing an issue with my new Lenovo K450 frequently crashing (6-8 times daily) with random errors displayed on the BSOD.

Lenovo have been zero help thus far after having me re-install Windows from scratch and performing all updates.

I have dozens of minidump files stored.

If anyone here can have a look at the included SF DIAG TOOL info and offer assistance, I would be very thankful.

Hi

Please try the below steps.

1. Uninstall GenesysLogic GeneStor.

This driver seems to be directly blamed in the last crash dump.

Code:
BugCheck 1000007E, {ffffffffc0000005, fffff8027f2aebe7, fffff88005fc07c8, fffff88005fc0000}

*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for GeneStor.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for GeneStor.sys
Probably caused by :[COLOR=#ff0000][B] GeneStor.sys[/B][/COLOR] ( GeneStor+790b )

After uninstalling the driver, disconnect the device from USB port.

2. Update TeamViewer.

Code:
[COLOR=RED][B]teamviewervpn.sys           Thu Dec 13 14:52:09 2007 (4760F9C1)[/B][/COLOR]
TeamViewerVPN Network Adapter

Update it from TeamViewer - Free Remote Access and Remote Desktop Sharing over the Internet

3. Update LAN and Wireless LAN drivers.

Wireless LAN - http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/desktop/h1100585.exe

LAN - Realtek

( Win8 and Win8.1 Auto Installation Program)

Let's check whether it makes any difference.

Hi

Varying BSOD can be an indication of a hardware issue, especially failing memory modules. Please run a memory diagnostic test using the free tool "Memtest86+".

Latest version : Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Guide : RAM - Test with Memtest86+ - Windows 7 Help Forums

This test may take several hours to complete depending on the amount of RAM. Fir an accurate result, a minimum of seven passes is required. More passes will give us better result. You can stop the test even if a single error is found. Otherwise let it complete 7-10 passes and post a clear screenshot (use a cam or cell phone) with next reply.

Hi

Although the RAM is new, there is still a chance for memory related issues like a bad memory slot etc. So it is always good to stress test the RAM when in doubt.

If the RAM test came clean (7 -10 passes) , please do the below steps.

1. Scan for malwares.

Malwarebytes free : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Download (Full scan )

Kaspersky TDSS killer : TDSSKiller Rootkit Removal Utility Free Download | Kaspersky Lab US ( a quick one minute scan to find rootkits)

ESET Online Scanner : Using ESET's Online Scanner - MajorGeeks Support Forums (as per the guide).

2.In your next reply, please include a "Speccy" snapshot of your system along with the memtest screenshot.

Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - Internet Applications Mini-Guides

(the web link it displays).

Hi

Please try the below steps.

1. Reset system BIOS.

How To Clear CMOS (Reset BIOS)

After resetting, load "Optimal default values".

2. Enable "Diver Verifier".

"Driver Verifier" is a Microsoft's own tool to stress test third party drivers and find faulty ones. Please read instructions from the below link for detailed info.

Driver Verifier - BSOD related - Sysnative Forums

After enabling the "Verifier" , system will blue screen if a buggy driver is found and the dump will contain info about the offending driver. After you got two or more blue screens, upload the new crash dumps for inspections. If the "Verifier" enabled dumps are also blaming Windows system files, it is considered as a clear sign of low level hardware issue.

BIOS Reset.

BSOD occurred quickly after logging into my windows account, repeatedly.

Required restoring to the just created restore point as directed.

Hi

The "Verifier" enabled dump blames Nvidia display driver.

Code:
BugCheck C4, {f6, 7a0, fffffa80148ee940, fffff8800535c90a}

*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for nvlddmkm.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for [COLOR=#ff0000][B]nvlddmkm.sys[/B][/COLOR]
Probably caused by : nvlddmkm.sys ( nvlddmkm+9a90a )

Current version seems to be a beta one so we should downgrade it to a known stable version.

1. Uninstall Nvidia components and driver completely. You need to uninstall components like Physx, 3D Vision , Nvidia update etc first and Display driver at last to properly remove the driver.

2. Download and install 314.22 WHQL version which is known to be stable.

NVIDIA DRIVERS GeForce 314.22 Driver WHQL

While installing, choose custom and deselect everything except Nvidia Display driver and Physx. Also put a tick mark on "Perform a clean install".

cleaninstallnvidia.jpg

Let us check whether it makes any difference. If the BSOD continues, please enable the verifier again.

I uninstalled all Nvidia drivers, in sequence, which required several reboots to complete.

Nvidia 314.22 installer failed multiple times to install, even after multiple reboots.

I finally threw in the towel, removed the graphics card and performed a fresh install of Win8 via Lenovo Rescue system.

I have only installed a handful of applications (Firefox, Chrome, etc) and already I am having crashes again, only a couple hours later.

New Speccy Snapshot here.

Current dump file included.

Any ideas?

Hi

At the time crash, DisplayLinkUI was the running process. Please uninstall Displaylink software as a test. Also download and run McAfee Product Removal Tool to clean McAfee leftovers.

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

A factory restore is supposed to cure any software issues so my suspicion is a hardware issue here. I will ask for help from someone more experienced than me to assist you.

Hi

For anyone who is willing to learn crash dump analysis, i would recommend watching the nine part video tutorial by Mark Russinovich who is the author of famous tools like Process monitor, Process Explorer , Autoruns etc.

Windows Hang and Crash Dump Analysis 1/9 - YouTube

This video tutorial is intended for beginners and explains the primers of debugging in a very simple manner.

Please remove Western Digital software. It's driver dates from 2008 and it is a known cause of BSOD's on some Windows systems.

144 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

GenesysLogic GeneStor driver is still installed. Did you remove it and leave it removed? If so, post back for instructions on how to safely remove it.

Please remove X5XSEx_Pr148.Sys (most likely a component of "Free Ride Games") by uninstalling the program.

If these things don't stop the BSOD's, then start with these free hardware diagnostics (as you've already run the RAM test it's safe to skip that for now): Hardware Diagnostics
