So I bought my laptop about 2 1/2 weeks ago from bj's as I needed a laptop for work. I had gotten a few bsod's in the first week I had it but figured it might be a bad os install or some bug. So I system restored back to when I first got it out of the box. I haven't had any issues in the last week or so until tonight. I opened chrome up and that is when it froze. I went ahead and checked the error code and it was a 0x0000124. I looked up the code and it said it is an hardware error. If that is indeed the case, I will exchange the laptop as I have 90 days to return the laptop to bj's. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The 0x00000124 error (STOP 0x124 for short) is most often seen as a hardware problem.
There are instances where it's caused by a driver, but I haven't seen anything significant in the memory dump to indicate that.

The only thing that I did notice was the presence of the wireless driver (athw8x.sys) in the stack text of the memory dump.
It's a possible problem, and you can easily replace it to see if it's the problem.

To do this:
- go to the Asus support website for your system and download the latest, Win8.1 compatible driver for your Qualcomm Atheros Wireless Lan (it's not the RaLink one, it's the other one). Notebooks & Ultrabooks - X550CA
- uninstall the current wireless program/drivers from the system
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

Should you get further BSOD's, pack it up and take it back to BJ's. It's most likely a hardware problem and you really don't want to waste your time on a system that you can exchange.

Good luck!
