Hi

Just built a new computer and keep getting the dpc_watchdog_violation BSOD at boot

It seems to get to the login screen okay, I click with the mouse to show login screen, but keyboard won't let me type in password, and then after a few moments I get the error

Boots fine in safe mode

Sometimes works okay in normal mode and once booted is perfectly stable

sf diagnostic logs attached

Okay thanks I will give that a try - but not sure I had it installed when this problem first started though, only went on in last few days - at that point crash dumps were pointing to usbd.sys being issue

But will remove AVG tomorrow and reboot several times and see if it happens again

You have a total of 6 BSOD's in your upload but the last four BSOD's dump files were not readable by diagnostic tool. The first 2 were caused by HDAudBus.sys. However, the process that caused the crash was AVG related.

thanks - now removing AVG and will report back how it goes after this

May I ask what diagnostic tool you use to read the dump files?

Only 18 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have about 26. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Your mobo looks to be UEFI capable - is there any particular reason that you're not using UEFI and Secure Boot?

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD. I usually can't see this info in the reports, so I rely on you to check it.
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to. If involved these should be visible in the memory dump - but it doesn't hurt to check manually.

There's a couple of Live Kernel Events - but no corresponding BSOD events in the WER section of MSINFO32
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

This memory dump blames HDAudBus.sys also - and it has traces of hal.dll in the stack text. I start thinking about incompatibility when I see hal.dll in the stack (could also be a hardware problem) - so please be sure that your audio drivers are the latest, Win8.1 compatible version available (the current driver dates from August of 2013).

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. I'm particularly concerned with trufos.sys - a component of BullGuard (I think)

Thanks for your reply - answers below:-

1) All updates ARE installed - listing 64 in update history - no more available

2) Because I have two normal hard disks setup as RAID (mirrored), so had to have it set to RAID in BIOS as it wouldn't work or let me boot from the SSD - unless I have missed something of course

3) SSD firmware is latest as are all storage controller drivers

4) event log attached

5) All hardware is new, so hopefully not hardware - now installing latest realtek 8 series audio driver from gigabyte website dated 7 November 2013 (for 8.1)

6) All drivers/software installed says Windows 8.1 compatible on relevant websites, when I installed this new build I made sure to only install latest versions of everything

7) Trufos.sys says it is a bitdefender file, but I use bullguard so must be a component they use - is latest build of bullguard, and this problem was happening prior to this when I had AVG installed (which I removed on advice of previous replies)

All disks pass without errors

The ports mentioned in the logs are my DVD drive, esata port (unused) and a removable caddy (unused)

So, then we have to wonder if it's a mobo problem (as that's what the DVD drive, esata port, and removeable caddy all have in common).

First step would be to update the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) drivers.
Use those from http://downloadcenter.intel.com as those from the mobo manufacturer can be outdated.

Next step is to wait and see if the BSOD's have stopped.
If not, please zip up and upload the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump with your next post (you may have to copy it to your desktop in order to zip it up).

Yes I did wonder that, but surely would be other issue if mobo? such as random crashing when in use?, because once it does boot it is very stable

Latest Intel RST already installed - v12.8.0.1016

Just got BSOD - attached minidump

Perhaps it is a problem with how I configured BIOS i.e. uefi/secureboot off etc - as I had to turn CSM on and set SATA to RAID not AHCI to get it to boot from my SSD drive

It's possible that it's due to the BIOS/UEFI configuration - but the only way that I know how to test that is to set the UEFI and SecureBoot - then install 8.1 "clean" It's likely to be very frustrating - and you may just find that it doesn't fix things.

The dump blames HDAudBus.sys again.
Have you:
- gotten ALL Windows Updates
- downloaded the latest version of the Win8.1 version of HD Audio driver from the Realtek download site: Realtek
- uninstalled the current audio drivers from the system
- installed the latest version that you have just downloaded
- then monitored for further BSOD's?

If you have onboard sound - try disabling the sound in the BIOS
If it's an add-on card, try removing the card to see if that stops the BSOD's
This'll be the test to see if it's the sound causing the problem.

If this doesn't fix things, then I'd have to conclude that there's a hardware problem.
We've ruled out 3rd party drivers and we've ruled out compatibility issues - all that's left is hardware or Windows (and Windows isn't very likely).
Where? I have no idea (other than the sound card)

Start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
If they all pass, then start with this: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting

Decided to go for it and completely reinstall Windows 8.1 from scratch - this time I have got UEFI/Secure Boot working properly, and it is now set to AHCI in BIOS rather than RAID

So far it seems a lot quicker and I have had no crashes or BSOD - so hopefully the BIOS settings were the cause

For info yes all windows updates were installed and the latest 8.1 version of the realtek driver was being used

Will see how it goes over next few days and the report back

been running for a few days and it now seems perfectly okay again - think all the issues were caused by incorrect installation of Windows 8.1 - I didn't supply the driver during setup so UEFI/AHCI/SecureBoot were not working correctly

Thanks for all your help
