Recurring Watchdog Violation

Hi guys,

I'm at my wit's end with the SAME BSOD. I've already run memtest (for 8 passes, overnight), chkdsk, removed drivers and updated others, Intel processor check utility (yes I know it's not so good but I just wanted to cover everything).

I'm pretty sure it more of a driver issue since it was rock stable with v8. The fun started with v8.1.

I've tried to read bluescreen view but I can't for this BSOD. It only highlights ntkernel as the crash item.

I read and followed the BSOD posting instructions. (what an amazingly complete tool this SF diagnostic tool!).

I also got a larger dump since I know that some things can't be diagnosed without a larger dump.

A quick synopsis of my system is:
CPU: Core I7-950 Stock
COOLER: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
MB: EVGA X58 Classified 3 EATX (latest bios 83)
MEM: 16GB Gskill Ripjaws DDR3 1333Mhz Stock
GPU: 2x EVGA GTX 560I stock
HDD1: Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series (boot drive)
HDD2: KINGSTON SV300S37A120G
HDD3: WDC WD6000HLHX-01JJPV0
HDD4: SAMSUNG HD204UI
HDD5: WDC WD1501FASS-00U0B0
PSU: Antec Truepower 1200
CASE: Cooler Master HAF X RC-942
OS: Windows 8.1 x64

I've attached a zip of the latest crash. I have a link to the larger memory.dmp if that's needed.

Also, I have several minidumps (I've kept them all) of this same BSOD if that's of any use.

Thanks to anyone who shed any light on this mystery!

We need all the minidumps - zip 'em up and upload them with your next post.
A single minidump is just a snapshot in time - and it may not have caught the offending driver.

Your BIOS dates from 2011. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD. I usually can't see this info in the reports, so I rely on you to check it.
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to. If involved these should be visible in the memory dump - but it doesn't hurt to check manually.

EVGA doesn't offer Win8.1 drivers for your motherboard, so this might mean that there's an incompatibility here. You'll have to get Win8.1 drivers from the device manufacturer. If unable to achieve stability, you may have to revert to Win8.

Interestingly, I see outdated Silicone Image drivers in the memory dump - but I'm not able to locate any Silicone Image devices in the technical specs of your motherboard. Please provide the exact model of your motherboard (there are 7 different models of the Classified3 board here: EVGA | Support | Product Specs )

The SATA 6 ports use a Marvell controller - but it's possible that they could us the Silicone Image drivers.
But I can't extract the drivers from the download page for some unknown reason.

Since there aren't any 8.1 drivers listed on the EVGA page, but looking at some of the possibilities on the Silicone Image page doesn't show any 8.1 drivers also.

Where did you get your copy of Windows 8.1 from? How about your copy of Windows 8?
The problem here is that we can't update the Silicone Image drivers because:
- we don't know what exact model they are for
- they may be too old to even have an 8.1 versioni
And, we don't know if we can safely remove them without hosing your system.

Beyond that, here's what I've found:

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Also, any of the drivers below that date from before the release of Win8.1 (late Oct 2013) could be a problem. You'll have to research each and every one in order to ensure that they are compatible with your system.

Wow, thank you SOOO much for you response. I'll will answer each point quickly.

Bios is the latest for my MB, I'm hoping it's not a compatibility issue as I can't really budget a new MB. I bought this when I was doing ok but things took a turn or else I would have replaced this already. That's why I really appreciate the help.

SSDs have latest firmware. I've updated chipset drivers directly from Intel (and are newer that ones EVGA offers) Same for Realtek: Lan and Audio drivers. Same with nvidia video drivers.

Silicone image was a driver for a drive that I took out. Seems those specific drivers are still there. I'll take them out immediately one by one if necessary.

I don't use the SATA 3 marvell drivers, can't find how to remove them and EVGA isn't answering.

Both windows v8 and 8.1 came from upgrade from MS and are legit. I had W7, legit, bought windows 8 when they had the $40 upgrade special and 8.1 was free of course.

I will update the tap driver and remove the Si drivers (Wow, what a great resource carrona.org is!)

My older minidumps might be more confusing because I've removed drivers and updated other drivers since then in an effort to troubleshoot. I've also removed a bunch of programs that I didn't use.

I do have a kernel memory dump (700megs) from this same crash. which I don't know if it would be helpful. I won't get another crash for 48 hours, it's almost like clockwork.

Memory.dmp (700 or so megs)
http://sdrv.ms/HN9GZF

Thank you again usasma, really appreciate you taking the time to look at all this techno jargon and translate it to english.

THANK YOU!

TangoBravo

EDIT: I spoke too soon, just got another Watchdog Violation. I've attached the SF file to this post
Also, this crash happaned before I removed the 3 drivers in red. I have now uninstalled OpenVPN and removed the SI drivers manually. In fact, I removed all 2012 drivers except for Truecrypt. I would need to move some files before I get rid of it.
I'm also going one by one to the link at the carrona site and simply uninstalling or updating drivers as need be.
Here's crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!'

P.S. I also get this error a lot: Display driver stopped responding... I wonder if this is related or sheds some light on the watchdog violation (see jpg attached.)

Hmmmm, I cant remove the Silicom Image drivers without getting inaccessible boot device error. The SI drivers were from a Revo drive which I long ago removed. How do I remove those Si drivers? (I couldn't not find an uninstall program for them.)

Got another watchdog violation...just now, SF file attached.

My apologies for taking so long to get back to this topic. I'm currently travelling and must've missed your reply.

I tried to download the large memory dump at work on Saturday - and it didn't work.
I also tried to download it while at the airport yesterday - but the connection was too slow to complete the download.
After getting your PM, I tried again this monring and succeeded.

I'll try to analyze it this morning (and to run the additional minidumps that you uploaded) - but I'm in conferences all day, and we have a dinner tonight. I can usually get some work done during the conferences, so I hope to have it done within the next several hours.

Please usasma, NO apologies needed, I am so, so very grateful to you that you are taking your time to look at this. I wish I could just but a new computer but it's not in the cards right now. (which makes your help so great!)

Let me now what you would like me to do and I'll do it asap.

BTW, I ran prime95 and memtest86 (3 hours and overnight respectively) and no issues.

Thanks again,

Here's the output of the full kernel dump. Since the only driver outside of core kernel drivers that I was able to locate was HDAudBus.sys - so I'd think that we should start by looking at that (software/hardware/compatibility)

Compatibility - check Windows Update for a later version (you have the original 8.1 version - 6.3.9600.16384, dated from 22 Aug 2013). If you don't have a later version, or if one isn't available - be sure to send error reports to Microsoft in case this is a "bug" in the OS (I see a large number of errors related to HDAudBus.sys when searching the web)

Software - Backup your system and set a System Restore point. Then go to Device Manager and open the System Devices category. Locate the High Definition Audio Controller and right click on it. Select "Properties"
Then select the "Driver" tab and select "Uninstall". Reboot to see if the changes fix it.

Hardware - not a lot to do here. Remove/disable (in the UEFI) your audio card - then remove the audio card software (to see if the audio card is messing with the HDAudBus.sys driver

FYI - we'll also have to look at the audio functions built into your video cards, any driver problems that may affect compatibility, and the affect that the SLI may have on it (which may mean testing without SLI enabled) Finally, I've been seeing issues w/the most recent nVidia drivers - and several people have fixed those problems by rolling back their video drivers to the previous version.

Good luck!

Here's the analysis of the latest memory dump. Please note that it's essentially the same as the full kernel dump I just analyzed.

The only thing we haven't discussed would be the reinstallation of Windows to see if that's a problem. The process here should include leaving out the Silicone Image drivers, and starting without SLI (and test both video cards individually - both with the latest drivers and the previous 2 versions.

Also, you'll notice that the TAP driver isn't updated. If it's involved, the only test will be to remove the software and physically remove the device from the system (and see if that stops the BSOD's) - this can be done temporarily (and to get internet access you'd have to get closer to a wired router or use a very long wire).

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Ok,

I checked and there was a new updated to the audio drivers since I updated them about 2 weeks ago. Leads me to believe that there may have been an issue hence the update of the drivers in the span of 2 weeks.

I can't remove the si drivers or I get inaccessible boot device. Same thing with the tap drivers. I did find an update to the Tap drivers and I installed. I went ahead and disabled them since I don't use that.

So 2 major changes, updated/disabled the tap drivers and updated HD audio drivers again.

How do I remove the SI drivers without causing boot issues? The si drivers aren't used anymore (AFAIK) so it must be something in the boot instructions requesting them. I tried using autorun utility to remove the checkmark and still got the "inaccessible boot device" BSOD.

Thank you again for you help!

Here's how to see if you can safely remove them:
1) Create a Restore Point using System Restore
2) Create a Repair disc:
Win8 - Press "WIN" and "R" to open the Run dialog...type "RECDISC" (without the quotes) and press ENTER
3) Test the System Repair disc to make sure that you can get to the System Restore entry when you boot from the disk (you may also want to try actually using System Restore to make sure that it works)
4) Download this free program (Autoruns for Windows) and use it to disable any instances of SiWinAcc.sys that are starting (or any other Silicone Image entries) (DO NOT DELETE - only disable by removing the checkmark in the left hand column)
5) Check in Device Manager (to include showing hidden devices from the View menu item) and ensure that any instances of SiWinAcc.sys (or any other Silicone Imaage entries) are "Uninstalled" (DO NOT DISABLE THESE).
6) Check in the Services applet (services.msc) to be sure any instances of SiWinAcc.sys or any other Silicone Image entries are disabled.
7) Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename the SiWinAcc.sys driver SiWinAcc.BAD (search the hard drive for it if it's not in C:\Windows\System32\drivers).

In the event that the system doesn't boot:

1) Boot from the System Repair disc and use the Command Prompt option to rename hssdrv6.BAD to hssdrv6.sys
Code:
ren C:\Windows\System32\drivers\SiWinAcc.BAD C:\Windows\System32\drivers\SiWinAcc.sys
2) Boot from the System Repair disc and use the System Restore option to restore the system to a point before the changes were made.

Good luck!
Substitute SiRemFil.sys for SiWinAcc.sys in order to remove that driver.

Wow, the show hidden devices really reveal a lot more in Device Manager.
I did find the silicon image controller. I uninstalled in device manager and disabled in autorun, got inaccessible boot device BSOD.

I was able to uninstall the SI storage controller in Dev Mgr and everything is working fine so far. I will continue to search for other services/device that might use those SI drivers.

Can't seem to find that last device/service that uses the SI drivers. I went through EACH listing in the dev mgr (with nothing hidden) and nothing has the SI drivers.

Any suggestions as to how to find whatever is loading those drivers?

Thank you so much!

We don't know if the drivers are still loading.
The way to check is to wait for the next BSOD - and look at the dump file to see if they're still there.

A "rough and ready" test is to rename those drivers (in C:\Windows\System32\drivers) to something else.
Then reboot. If you get the inaccessible boot device - then they're most likely loading.
But then you'll have to use System Restore and rename the files (as in the last part of my previous suggestion) in order to get back into Windows.

If that's the case, then it's time to consider a fresh install (although there may be entries in the registry that haven't been checked)
If the Silicone Image drivers come back after a "Clean" install of Windows - then you'll have to consider that this might be an incompatibility between your system and Win8.1 (another thing to check is in your UEFI/BIOS to see if there's a setting to turn off a Silicone Image controller).

Unfortunately, the more complicated/advanced the system is - the more possibilities there are for problems. We'll keep looking at things until we find the problem - or decide if it's an unfixable incompatibility.

Good luck!

Just FYI, this poster had BSOD issues with a Silicone Image card and drivers that dated from 200y.
They fixed them by removing the card (which, presumably stopped the drivers from loading.

I think that if we manage to get rid of the Silicone Image drivers from your system - the BSOD's will most likely stop.
Unfortunately, the only way to tell if they've stopped is to wait....
How long? Well, that depends on a lot of things - but I generally say:
- after 1 week it's safe to say that it may be fixed
- after 2 weeks it's probably safe to say that it's fixed.

Good luck!

The card that used the SI drivers was long gone and the BSOD continued.

I had not removed the devmg entries because they were hidden (thanks for that, I learned something new). I got rid of both entries.

Also, updated the audio drivers to the very latest. (they had 2 updates inside of a week, and I checked everything else, chipset, lan etc to see if there had been yet another update.). I will also try going back 2 version of the video drivers. Hopefully these actions will solve the issue.

I guess time will tell. I would do the fresh install (cheaper that a new computer) but I could still spend the hours doing it and end up with the same problem. Plus, MS doesn't make it easy for a fresh 8.1 install, but that's beside the point.

I'll update as when I have more info. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thank you very much!!!

I was jubilant and relieved...gone 2 whole days, of heavy usage...and no watchdog BSOD.....

But no, :( showed up again....

I've attached the SF output and a link to the kernel memory dmp.

No significant changes in this full memory dump - still a processor has hung and we don't have any decent info about what hung it.
The only difference that I noted was the presence of USB drivers in the memory dump driver listing.

The Silicone Image drivers remain - and they are the most likely issue here. As you can't remove the Silicone Image drivers without rendering the system unbootable - I'd suggest that you try a "clean install" of Windows.
Instructions here: Canned Speeches

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thanks U, for looking at this.

I've already updated everything that I could and still keep a booting system. I tried going into the registry and taking out everything from SI. As you probably know, that didn't work.

I do have a USB headset that I'm taking out.

I wouldn't mind biting the bullet and doing a clean install over the Thanksgiving Holiday. My concern is that we don't really know for sure what the problem is. It's might be those old SI drivers, but I could do the clean install and still end up with the same problem.

I'm also told that MS (in it's infinite wisdom) only allows one reactivation of W8. (mind you, this is after not allowing you to download a 8.1 ISO, but making a legal user go through pirate like tricks to get it. thanks to winsupersite on this).

The best option is getting a new MB/processor but that's not an option right now. So I guess I'll just trug along expecting periodic BSODs.

Funny thing is that I think that every time I get a "video driver has restarted error" the BSOD comes not long after that. So I guess I'll just restart once I get the video driver error.

I tell you this, the reason MS is still in business is because of people like you who help out. MS could not support the biz model of actually have to support a problematic OS. (and yes, I blame the OS for allowing drivers and other things to interfere with it's operation. The buck has to stop somewhere. Just because we get used to expecting these problems doesn't make it right. After all, this isn't windows 1 or 2 or 3. Maybe around windows 59 the BSODs will be fewer :sarc:).

Ok, enough pointless venting. Thanks again U, for you help.

Maybe a miracle will solve it and I won't see that ever so popular BSOD screen. Then again, I find a lottery ticket on the sidewalk....

Thanks again for your help.

Do you have another video card that you can try?
Other than that I think that the OS install is the next step - but you're right, it may not fix things.
Good luck!
