Hello,

I have a Windows 8 Laptop which is only about 3 months old now. Recently, when I want to restart my laptop, the Restarting takes too long and it stucks with the Restarting screen for about 5 minutes then a window will appear, it states that this laptop encounters an error and it begins to collect the info of the problem and at the bottom I can see that it asks me to find more details on this error :

DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

So far I haven't find a single solution for this.

FYI, I restart my laptop because :-

*Any USB inserted is not detected and cannot be found on My Computer, hence I need to restart it.
*WiFi is not available although it is already on and I can't troubleshoot the problem.

When these two problems occur, I need to restart the laptop and this is where the process is taking too long until the BSOD comes in and restart the laptop normally, only then it is fixed but it is annoying because when I open my laptop from Hilbernate, wifi always not available and sometimes usb inserted can't be detected, that's why I have to restart.

For starters:
At work we start all repairs with a set of diagnostics. Often they find problems that weren't even expected. It's a waste of time to try to fix software on a system that has hardware problems.
Please try these free diagnostics for starters: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

I'm wondering if this is a memory problem, so the memory diagnostics should probably be the first thing that you try.

Check here to see if any of the KB articles apply to your situation: BSOD Index

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics. Let us know the results and we can move on from there.

Hmm this is complicated. So the Cyberlink Power DVD is the cause? Can I just uninstall this because I don't use it anyway.

About the Realtek Turbo Mode Filter driver, I went to their site but I can't find/know which one to download.

We don't know what the cause is at this point.
I suspect bad memory - so the diagnostics should come first.
There's no sense in fixing software problems if there's a hardware problem in the system. Once you've ruled out the hardware (RAM) then we'll have a look at software if the problems still remain.

The Cyberlink and the Realtek drivers are merely older (they came out before Win8 was released) - so there's a chance that they may be causing problems. Uninstall the Cyberlink to see what happens.

Try this driver for the Realtek: USB RTS5139/RTS5129/RTS5179 card reader driver for XP/Win7/Win8/Win8.1
Get it from this link: Realtek
It's the 5th one down on the page - make sure you get the one that says RTS5179

Ok I am uninstalling the Cyberlink Power DVD now and in the mean time downloading the Realtek driver. I hope these two are the issue and will be solved after this cause it happen again this afternoon.

Can you know what might be the cause if it is a hardware problem? I just bought this laptop 3 months ago.

The Hardware Diagnostics is complicated man, I'm scared if will make it worse

If it's easier for you:
1) use HDTune from within Windows in order to get and idea about the hard drive
2) run Prime95 from within Windows in order to get an idea about the memory

Hmm I'll see what I can do.

Sir, it seems my problem is not fixed. It happened again this evening. There must be something that triggers the problem because it was working fine during the afternoon. Then later that night I want to plug in my usb controller then it's not working. My usb mouse which was plugged in all day long was still working but when I unplug it and plug it back, it's not working anymore. I have to restart it and BSOD comes again.

Will formatting help solve this problem?

EDIT: I googled my problem and I found a youtube video for the solution. It says that I need to open the Device Manager and expand all categories to find the device that has a yellow exclamation mark. And I found there's a device that has a yellow exclamation mark on my laptop. It's under :-

Other devices > USB2.0-CRW

At the moment I disabled this device but shall I uninstalled it? So far the BSOD didn't happen. I'll report back.

Do not uninstall it yet. Be sure that the BSOD's have definitely stopped.
What does it say for the device's hardware ID? Right click on the device, select "Properties", then select the "Details" tab - and select Hardware ID in the dropdown box.

Have you tried installing the Realtek driver that I suggested (with the device enabled)? My searches show that this is a possible cause of the malfunctioning device - and installing it may fix it.

The Hardware ID is for the Realtek USB Card Reader.
As you've installed the driver, all you have to do is to re-enable the USB2.0-CRW device in Device Manager
Test the card reader by using it and seeing if that causes any BSOD's.

I believe that the problem device became a "phantom device" once you installed the drivers for the Card Reader.
I think this happens because the USB2.0-CRW device was disabled and couldn't change (when you installed the Card Reader drivers)
As such the system decided to just treat it as if it was a phantom device.
Since it had no drivers installed, it was easy for the system to remove it when you told it to "uninstall"

Or, I just got lucky with the guesses I made! :0)

In the future, how to know if there's any driver that is outdated or any update available for it?

Dating drivers is a difficult task as there's no sure way to determine if they are problematic or not.

When having BSOD's we presume the problems (as we don't know which are actually at fault) and act proactively to update anything that may be out of date (we update anything that we can find, and we update them from the device manufacturer's website if possible).

At work we update systems (that are not having problems) by using Windows Update and the OEM manufacturer's tools/website (Dell in this case). My experience with the Dell updater hasn't been successful, so I just keep an eye out for drivers released around/after the OS/Service Pack was released.

It won't hurt for you to check the Dell site for all drivers, then monitor it to update as new one's are released.

FWIW - I don't trust the driver updaters that you find on the web. In most cases they aren't worth using - and in those that do do an accurate job, they're often too complicated to be useful.

Good luck!
