Solved DPC Watchdog Violation, Windows 8

Hi there, I have had my Samsung laptop for almost a year now. A week ago I experienced the above error for the first time after my OS crashed (for the first time also). Now I'm not tech savvy, actually far from it, but just before this started I attempted to upgrade to Windows 8.1; I say attempted because I did not complete the upgrade. I've read a number of forums concerning the issue and a lot of them mention updating firmware on my SSD/hard drive. These also talk about copying dumpfiles to SkyDrive for them to check what led to the crash and how best to fix it. I think that I might be too stupid because I cannot find these dumpfiles. Could you guys perhaps help me out here? Also, would upgrading to W8.1 resolve these issues?

Thanks.

That error has to do with SSD drives, but it also happens when trying to Print if you have your printer plugged into a USB Hub. It also happens when plugging a Blackberry Z10 into the system. What you need to do, is look through your Event Logs and try to find what was happening when the error came up. It could also happen if you need new Firmware for your SSD drive or Laptop Motherboard.

Did the system come back up after rebooting?

Thanks XweAponX. No I haven't had a printer or Blackberry connected to my device. I've heard/read about updating my firmware and accessing event logs but my issue is that I have no idea where to get these or which firmware would be the correct ones for my drive/motherboard. (My laptop is so slow now, it's taken me about 10 min to type this).

Hit Windows Key + X and find the Run command and type MSCONFIG, go to Services and "Hide all MS Services". look through whats left and see if you can disable some unused services.

Right Click on the Taskbar and get into the Task Manager, go to Startup, look at whats there, see if there are any apps you can disable in Startup.

How is your Video, goes it look flat and simplistic? Make sure your Video Driver is running.

Has it happened any more? If it happens again we'll do a DISM on it. But if it is slow now, you probably have a Program running, it could also be an antivirus like Norton, if you use Norton, it uses up a LOT of resources. I usually use Defender or something simple like Avast or Eset.

XweAponX, I've tried your suggestions with no discernable improvements. Also, I've used Norton for the past year now and haven't had any problems before now. Having said that, I've tried to uninstall it on a number of occassions since I've been experiencing problems with my laptop to no avail.

You will need to go to the Norton site and download the program to uninstall it. Once Norton's on your system, they make you jump through hoops to get it off.

I've managed to uninstall Norton with the link you provided. When I restarted my device I experienced a BSoD with the following error message: "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (HIDCLASS.SYS)". Any ideas?

This does not look right. I'm using a trial version of winzip since I've lost all my programmes/apps when my device crashed. Could this be the reason? I'm only seeing an X within a black square where the file should be. I can see the file in the preview though. Hoping you can access it.

Thanks

Only 349 MB of your RAM available - this will cause problems with your system.
Please look into adding more RAM. While waiting to add more RAM please:
- only run one program at a time
- disable any unneeded startups in TaskManager's Startup tab (you may have to press "More details" in order to see the tabs)

104 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 150 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

This device is disabled. Is it deliberate? If so, why?:
Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter {5D624F94-8850-40C3-A3FA-A4FD2080BAF3}\VWIFIMP_SAP\5&15B096BF&0&03 This device is disabled.
Please re-enable the device, reboot, then check Windows Update to make sure it doesn't need updating.

One of the memory dumps blames Norton (and is Driver Verifier enabled).
To test to see if this is the cause, please do this:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- un-install the Norton from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of Norton using this free tool: http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN
- IMMEDIATELY enable Windows Defender, then check to ensure that the Windows Firewall is turned on.
- perform a full system scan to ensure that no malware has snuck onto your system while the anti-virus was malfunctioning.
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's
NOTE: NEVER run more than 1 anti-virus, firewall, Internet Security/Security Center application at the same time.
Don't forget to turn Driver Verifier off. To do this, open up verifier.exe and select "Delete existing settings", then click on "Finish" and reboot for the settings to take effect.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Much appreciated John. Applied your suggestions (have a few questions which i will post later) and will give it 24 hours to see if my machine's performance improves and/or if I experience anymore BSods. Will advise on outcome. Have to say though that my machine is much faster then it was before I implemented these changes/corrections.

I noticed a post about hardware issues in one post. Starting having several crashes a day with this error message. Checked all the drivers and other updates. All up to date. Then noticed that the right shift key on the keyboard had been sticking. Changed the keyboard and no crashes since.
