Solved Windows 8.1 BSOD Fresh Install - igdkmd64.sys

Edit: Issue solved as of Intel HD Graphics Driver 10.18.10.3345

I get a BSOD with message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (igdkmd64.sys) shortly after launching any game. The driver is linked to Intel's Integrated Graphics which I have updated with 'Windows 8.1 Ready' drivers. My laptop has a Nvidia dedicated GPU which is what I set games to run with, so I'm not sure why Intel's drivers are failing.

I read online that this BSOD can be related to memory issues and since using a fresh 8.1 install I have been receiving low memory error messages whilst playing games despite me having 16GB of RAM.

Thanks for your help.

I have exactly the same thing happen. I discovered it whilst playing Dirt3 and Grid2. I get a message about the memory and then a little later the crash happens. I really hope someone can help otheriwise I am reinstalling version 8.0

Not sure if yours is the same issue as mine but I found that in Nvidia Control you can set the Nvidia GPU as default. Restart the system and try playing then. It's been fine for me so far. I think this means Nvidia GPU is used for everything on the system.

This is only a temporary solution though, I'm guessing Intel need to release new graphics drivers.

If you'd like individual assistance for your own problem, please start your own topic and post this information: http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

SkySoldier - the first thing to do is replace your Intel video drivers. Please do this:
- download a fresh copy of the latest, Win8.1 compatible video drivers for your Intel graphics card
- uninstall the current Intel graphics drivers from your system
- install the freshly downloaded video drivers and monitor for further BSOD's

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Filter Driver for Identification of Microsoft Hardware Wireless Mouse and Keyboard Device Models - Microsoft IntelliType Pro / IntelliPoint
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=dc3d.sys

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

As this has the "feel" of a hardware problem (IMO), you can get a head start by running these diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics I'd start with the video tests first, but be sure to complete them all.

I am a new member. I am having exactly the same experience as SkySoldier - a BSOD with message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (igdkmd64.sys) when playing a game (in my case Civ4!). I also received low memory alerts. I have updated all drivers (Nvidia, Intel, etc) to latest windows 8.1 compliant to no avail. I have also tried the suggestion of setting the Nvidia GPU as default but still got a BSOD. If anyone has found a solution please advise or is this something that Intel or Microsoft have to solve ( I've found others on the web with the same problem). Help please!!

Thanks usasma for the help, I will definatly try to update those out of date drivers. I'm going to leave this issue as it is for now as I've found a tempory solution and think that the problem is related to Intel's driver or Windows 8.1 itself. Intel migth release new drivers soon, I've had problems with their drivers before...

Simonvick and tiger did you definitely set the Global Settings as Nvidia and then reboot afterwards?

Small screencap below.

I haven't tried any newer games yet but Children of the Nile and Sid Meier's Railroads work fine, I'll try Rome II tonight.

Hi Skysoldier, I am running an AMD Radeon HD7000 series card so not a Nvidia. I have looked for equivelent settings and have changed anything that looks like it might help. I have tried disabling the intel graphics "card" but I dont have an option in bios so have tried it from My Computer, this just stops the AMD card from working as well. I have also uninstalled the Intel and AMD drivers and reinstalled the latest that I could find on the respective sites. To be clear, this NEVER happened before the 8.1 update so I firmly believe it is either down to the update itself or dodgy drivers from Intel. In detail what happens is this. I start a game (eg Grid 2, Dirt3) about 5 mins in a warning pops up about memory usage and it being almost full, this is incorrect as system monitor says its at about 20% full and I have 16gb. Then about 10 mins later I get the BSOD (except its more of a purple/pink colour) and the message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (igdkmd64.sys). The timings are not exact. It dosnt seem to happen to all games, World in Conflict has worked fine since the update.

I am contemplating the extreme action of reinstalling Windows8 from scratch and waiting until they sort the problem out. Intel and Microsoft the big boys of PC Gaming...perhaps they want us all to buy a PS4?

If you can't find an AMD solution I would definitely reinstall Windows 8. Intel have been pretty bad with driver releases for me in the past, could be a long wait.

The update from 8 to 8.1 can be done with out a format anyway, that's if you don't mind not using a clean install.

Thanks USASMA. I will certainly keep an eye on this forum to see if a solution can be found.

Skysoldier, thanks for the advice. I dont know how easy it will be to turn back the clock and go back to 8 from 8.1. I only use the laptops for games and I think it will be easier to start from scratch and clean install windows8. A mate of mine told me about this site https://ninite.com/ which is a great way of installing the apps that I used. Its then just the games which I can do as and when.

Having said all that, I think it is poor that I am having to do it all and, joking aside, it does make you look at a games console and think maybe that is an easier option.

Hi, I have been doing some testing and trying different things out and I think I have fixed my problem. I left Grid 2 running for over 2 hours with not so much as a hitch so I think it might be fixed. This is what I did, I uninstalled my AMD drivers (13.11) and then I uninstalled the Intel drivers from the programs and Features application within the control panel. I then went to device manger (right click this computer and choose properties). I right clicked on the Intel card and selected uninstall. So now when I right click on my desktop there is nowhere to choose any kind of graphic properties. I then restarted my laptop and installed the latest AMD Drivers again. The strange thing is the intel drivers seem to reinstall themselves. Not the ones that were installed but an earlier version. I have taken a couple of screen shots that will hopefully make it clear what drivers are installed. Let me know how you get on and good luck. If it goes wrong again I will repost.

Heyhey,

So, I got like exactly the same problem! I have installed the new 8.1 Windows and since then i get messages that my computer is low on memory... I don't know a lot about computers besides from the games^^ So i asked my father how i can do something about the low memory but he says that my computer has enough memory! And (as it has been said quite some times on this topic) when i play LoL (league of legends) my computer restarts on it's own at least like 3 times a day... My dad says it's a problem with the graphic drivers and he installed updates for the intel hd graphics ad other things but that didn't change anything... :( So, yeah, I have read the answers on this topic but i don't understand a thing about what you guys say :p as I said above I don't know a lot about computers and when i read like : "You have to uninstall the drivers and install others and then do this and that" I don't know what to do exactly and how to do it... :( Is there someone who can explain to me how to resolve the problem step by step? I would really appreciate it :) It's been a week i can't play games normally...

Already a big thanks to those able to help me :)

I can't really help further than what I've said so far. I haven't had any BSODs or crashes since I forced the Nvidia GPU to do everything. The Intel drivers have crashed a few times but it does not matter as nothing is running off them. I've tested a ton of games and they all work fine.

Do you have a Nvidia or AMD/ATI GPU?

Just to let everyone know, Intel have recently released new graphics drivers and now I have no issues letting programs and games use the Intel Integrated Graphics. No more BSODs. This is on Windows 8.1.
