Random BSOD's one happened the first time I tried to post

Blue screens no matter what is going on or when nothing is going on... it's not constant... sometimes hours between. I've updated the OS and applications as much as I can via WU, applications and the like. Upgraded to Win8.1 hoping that would help, but it hasn't.

Ideas?

Thanks

Edit: I posted it quick so I could make sure it got up instead of crashing again.

Crashes have been going on for several months... can use the PC for hours at a time. Sometimes, I sit down and after the system has at some point in the day, booted up after a crash... no one has signed in or run anything... hit a key... only to BS.

In general, if you upgrade an OS and it still has problems - then hardware is the most likely cause.
BUT, there are a lot of other things to consider if you've been using the system for any length of time (as the installed stuff can also easily cause this).

Memory dumps seem to point at RAM. Try these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
Start with MemTest86+ and Prime95 - then run the others just to be sure.
It may be difficult to run MemTest86+ If so, post back for help with turning off Secure Boot and enabling the legacy boot stuff.

Errors in MemTest86+ are sort of like errors in your checkbook.
If they're in the ¢ column - they're not a big deal
If they're in the $ column - then it's a big deal
Unfortunately, we don't know which "column" the MemTest86+ errors are in.
The safest thing to do is to replace the stick (but it's your wallet, so you get to decide)

I have 2 8Gb sticks... can you tell if they are in the same bank by those memtest numbers? I can do the memstep shuffle to figure out which is bad.... if only one is bad :)

Also.... is there any indicator as to whether the problem would be in the memory vs the socket on the mobo? I think memtest essentially shows errors in memory modules themselves unless it shows a cascade of errors... but it's been a long time since I've done this regularly and would like your opinion. Might help shorten the troubleshooting time.

Thanks for your assistance by the way. I do appreciate it.

The purpose of the MemTest "shuffle" is two-fold:
1) to figure out which sticks are bad, and
2) to figure out if any of the slots are bad.

Test each stick in the first slot.
Take the one that tests good there and test it in all slots.
If both test bad in the first slot, then test both in the next slot - etc, etc, etc

Unfortunately, with large sticks these tests do take a while.
I'd run each one overnight and see what happens.

Good luck!

Yup, I'm familiar with the purpose and that worked to narrow it to a single module... I just didn't know what memtest was able to tell us in it's error message (e.g. slot 2 was the culprit) so I could try that module alone in it's slot then move to confirm type narrowing.

I opened and RMA and will get it taken care of. Thanks for the assistance usasma.

Just found this link today. It says (basically) that there's no significance to the error messages in MemTest (other than the fact that an error did occur). The FAQ also confirms my long-held suspicion that MemTest doesn't test all RAM, but it does test other memory.

MemTest FAQ: FAQ : please read before posting
