BSOD Windows 8.1 Memory_Management

Hi all,

First post here so point anywhere I screw up :p. I just installed Windows 8.1 64-bit from MSDN/Dreamspark and installed it to my new Samsung 840 EVO. For some reason it's been crashing a lot ever since I installed it. I got all the latest drivers for everything (verified Windows 8.1).

The most prominent error has been either Memory_Management but there have been a few others (minidumps attached below, obtained with tool from forums).

The only non-essential programs I have installed so far have been Chrome, League of Legends, WarThunder, Microsoft Office 2013 and IntelliJ IDEA iirc.

EDIT1: Forgot to mention that my Windows 7 64-bit (Dual Boot) runs just fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Blitzninja.

Only 3 Windows Updates installed. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD. I usually can't see this info in the reports, so I rely on you to check it.
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to. If involved these should be visible in the memory dump - but it doesn't hurt to check manually.

Just in case this is a 3rd party driver problem, please run Driver Verifier according to these directions: Driver Verifier Settings

Also, please run these free hardware diagnostics (that's the most likely suspect IMO): Hardware Diagnostics
I suspect a memory problem of some sort - so all the tests are needed (even the hard drive - as it stores the pagefile for virtual memory).

BugCheck 18, {0, ffffe000496a9b60, 1, 44ba83715390cfec}
BugCheck Info: REFERENCE_BY_POINTER (18)
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000000, Object type of the object whose reference count is being lowered
Arg2: ffffe000496a9b60, Object whose reference count is being lowered
Arg3: 0000000000000001, Reserved
Arg4: 44ba83715390cfec, Reserved
The reference count of an object is illegal for the current state of the object.
Each time a driver uses a pointer to an object the driver calls a kernel routine
to increment the reference count of the object. When the driver is done with the
pointer the driver calls another kernel routine to decrement the reference count.
Drivers must match calls to the increment and decrement routines. This bugcheck
can occur because an object's reference count goes to zero while there are still
open handles to the object, in which case the fourth parameter indicates the number
of opened handles. It may also occur when the object?s reference count drops below zero
whether or not there are open handles to the object, and in that case the fourth parameter
contains the actual value of the pointer references count.

Well good news..so far.

I installed all of the latest windows updates and a new chipset driver was released from Gigabyte (it's not on the website for some reason, you need to use their update utility) and I haven't crashed yet, not to mention that my SSD seems noticeable more responsive.

I'll post back if the situation changes but for now it seems to be fixed. NOTE: Do not mark as resolved, I will do so in about a week if there are no more crashes..just to be sure.

Thanks for all the help until now.

Sincerely,

Blitzninja.

    Other Info
    I'm handsome and a snappy dresser :0)
I am running a Samsung 840 EVO SSD with the EXT0BB0Q firmware (see OP) and all Windows 8.1 Updates as of 14/10/2013.

There are no more BSODs at the moment and only a few software crashes due to Windows 8.1 incompatibility (i.e. League of Legends LoLClient.exe crashes when you finish a game; known issue).

Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver update from Gigabyte's Auto Updater seemed to have fixed it so far.

P.S. My System Spec has my PC's full details.
P.S.S. Your 8GB of DDR3 RAM on your laptop should be enough :p
P.S.S.S. I still have a 800x600 Resolution CRT Monitor :), it gets really hot, sometimes I wonder if I should use it as a heater :D

Sincerely,

Blitzninja.
