Crash/Freeze while playing FFXIV, no BSOD.

Hi everyone,

Can you please provide me some hints how to track the cause of a system freeze with an horrible sound loop when playing FFXIV.

Here is the SF file View attachment 28542

Cheers,

Kayhen

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

If not experiencing BSOD's, please also upload this report:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

First off, a disclaimer - I am not familiar w/8.1 so my analysis is based on Win8 RTM
8.1 is (as I understand it) a Developer's Release - so it can be expected to have bugs.
In the end, the only sure thing will be to revert to Win8 RTM and wait for the RTM version of 8.1

Ensure that you have ALL Windows Updates. This is very important!

You have 4 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

The symptoms sound like a video problem - and there are video errors in the WER section of MSINFO32.
Please follow these suggestions for troubleshooting the video errors (even though you haven't seen BSOD's): Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117 - Sysnative Forums

Hi,

1st of all thank you for dedicating time to help me with this issue.

Will update the post with the events file as soon I get home since at the moment I am at work.

I actually have an PSU: Corsair Builder Series CX750W Modular '80 Plus Bronze' which is less than a year old.

Regarding the Hard drives I have 3 SATA drives and a 4 external USB drive from western digital with 1 TB that is always connected but when not used enter in energy saving mode.

I should actually say that I removed all NVIDIA drivers using the method and tool provided here in the forum and currently have the Geforce 327.23 WHQL released on the 19.9.2013.

Regarding the graphics card was stress tested with Furmark during 30 minutes the actual temperature was never above 80 degrees and the fan speed was never above the 65%.

There is no heating issues with the processor usually never goes above 45 degrees aprox (will post the speccy temps lates with the correct temperatures).

However I have one of the sata drives that goes to 50 degrees not sure if this is acceptable.

Motherboard and memory were changed during the summer so they are new and I use a thermaltake armor jr. that has a very good performance regarding cooling.

All windows updates are installed. Is there any way to revert back to the widows 8 without doing a clean install?

Cheers,

Kayhen

From Windows 8.1 Preview FAQ - Microsoft Windows :
Can I uninstall Windows 8.1 Preview?
Uninstalling the preview isn't supported. However, it may be possible to restore your entire system to its factory condition.

If your PC came with Windows 8 you may be able to restore it back to Windows 8 by using PC refresh. Your personal files won't be affected, but apps that did not come with the PC will need to be reinstalled and apps that you installed while using the preview may not be available through the Windows 8 Store. To find out more about using PC refresh, see Restore, refresh, or reset your PC.

If you're running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, you can't uninstall the preview. To go back to your previous operating system, you'll need to reinstall it from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC (typically DVD media). If you don't have recovery media you might be able to create it before you update from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer's website for more info. After you install Windows 8.1 Preview you won't be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.

I'll still need to have a look at this report:
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Lot's of errors in the log due to Nero. Please uninstall it to see if that fixes it.

Try this:
Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after each one:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

If the problem is fixable, you can use this command to repair it (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after typing it:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

From this article: Repair a Windows Image

You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

Next:
Ensure that all Windows Updates are installed.
Go into Control Panel...Programs...Turn Windows Features On or Off
Deselect all the .NET stuff
Close the dialog and reboot the system.
Then go back and re-enable the .NET stuff
Close the dialog and reboot the system.
Ensure that all Windows Updates are installed.

Get the latest video drivers for your system from nVidia
First try this one: Drivers | GeForce
Then, if still having problems, try the beta driver here: Drivers | GeForce
Make sure that you uninstall the current video drivers before installing the freshly downloaded drivers.

Hi I did exactly what you said and the errors on the admin log continued and also constant freezes, since I had many .net related stuff in errors decided to do a win 8 clean install, so no more 8.1 from now on.

Ill keep you posted regarding if this worked and close the thread as solved, if not will change the Nvidia drivers to the beta version.

Cheers,

kayhen

After the clean install windows 8 did not have any more crashes, so I'll assume that is solved.

Also the hardware will change this week since I ordered a NVIDIA GTX 770 Phantom.

thank you for your help
