I got a new Dell XPS 8700 a few days ago, and have been getting pretty random BSODs always containing ntoskrnl.exe as the cause on my blue screen viewer. They tend to happen sometimes in game, on game closing and once on start-up. Some games I can play for hours and no blue screen some I play for a while and I get one. I've tested all my RAM and my HDD for bad sectors and errors. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I have uploaded my dump files and system info

UPDATE: I'm not 100% positive but it seems like these BSODs only happen on games that have access to an internet connection. It has never happened on games that are single player only.

Your Atheros/Dell extensible WLAN network adapter driver (athrx.sys) is the cause. Head over to Dell's driver page for your model and install the "Dell DW1703 802.11 b/g/n,BT4.0 + HS" driver. That should update your current version.

Code:
BugCheck D1, {10000024, 2, 0, fffff8800751e2af}

Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\athrx.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for athrx.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for athrx.sys
Probably caused by : athrx.sys ( athrx+2932af )

Other dumps point to hal.dll and watchdog.sys, if the above doesn't fix your problem you should run Prime95 and memtes86+ for at least 7 passes.

I have updated that driver since posting in this thread, still didn't help. After that I updated the realtek PCIe drivers and wiped the remains of my old gpu from my system and it ran fine for about 6 hours, seemingly fixed. then while playing payday 2 I just got another BSOD. I have already ran memtest for 9 passes before posting here.

Could my wifi card possibly be shot?Including a newer dump file, because i have had a few bsods since posting.

Can't seem to find any particular cause but you have a rather old driver that could be problematic: CLVirtualDrive.sys (Virtual Clone Drive), remove this from your system.

One dump did point to nvlddmkm.sys, your Nvidia driver. Upgrade to 327.23
NVIDIA DRIVERS 327.23WHQL

Post back with new dumps if any.

I found a more recent update for that wifi card, and used device remover to rid my computer of unused devices. I'm still convinced its that wifi card because i only get BSOD in games that have online capability. If I get another BSOD I'll post another dump, thx.

Just got another BSOD, here is the dump.

Also, I can't figure out how to get rid of that CLvirtualdrive.sys

I was getting this blue screen before I put the nvidia card in though, I had an ATI card before that.

After doing everything you suggested I thought it was fixed, so I decided to play the game that always gives me a blue screen Payday 2. I played for about 2 hours and then the sound went glitchy then cut out altogether, so I finished my match and restarted the computer. When it got to the log in I got a BSOD. here is the dump. Thanks for your patience and help in this matter.

Latest dump is still pointing to the Nvidia Streamer Service but a core kernel module was also involved, this is usually triggered by a hardware fault. If it's not the RAM either the processor or GPU is the likely cause here, stress test your GPU with OCCT.

If my processor or GPU is at fault then why would it only trigger a blue screen on a game that has internet, I can play Skyrim with ENB mods and texture packs that stress my system and play it for hours and get no BSOD.

UPDATE: Ok I completely removed geforce experience which is the program that handles nvidia streamer service. also, tested GPU and CPU. Guess its the waiting game for a BSOD now, or hopefully not. Will post back with an update.

I tried to isolate the error, so I went through a bunch of games to try to get the BSOD. play list is as follows. Tomb Raider 1 hour, Diablo 3 1 hour, bioshock infinite 3 hours, Dead Island Riptide 2 hours, Dead Space 3 2.5 hours, then Payday 2 5 mins, BSOD.

All games at max settings, in-case that matters

this is blowing my mind, is it possibly a steam related problem? because of all those games Payday is the only one I play on Steam.

Anyway including dump thx in advance.

Steam was indeed involved but it's unlikely to the be problem here. Other than that I can't find any plausible cause, I've called in additional help.

Endureit asked me to take a look at this (via PM).
Sorry if I'm butting in!

Out of 23 memory dumps there were 10 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Now some further discussion:
- Daemon Tools doesn't appear to be on your system anymore - but it was there up until 4 memory dumps ago. This means that some of the BSOD's may have been due to it (which skews the analysis that we're trying to do right now).
- video is involved in most of this (not unusual, but something to keep an eye on).
- you were having BSOD's with the ATI video card and the nVidia video card. But the ATI video card was present while Daemon Tools was installed.

IMO the most likely cause is either the video card or the mobo. The wifi card is also a suspect. I had a Dell laptop (I realize that yours is a Desktop) at work not long ago that was overheating the wifi card - and that caused frequent connection problems.

As this is a new system, you may want to look into returning/exchanging it. Normally installing a new video card won't void the warranty - but you'll have to check the specifics with Dell. If unable to return it, but you are able to reproduce the BSOD's - then you may want to take it in for hardware diagnostics under the manufacturer's warranty.

3 things to test (IMO) - please do the tests separately.
- monitor video when playing at less than max settings (if crashes take longer that may make it a video problem)
- open up the side of the case and point a house fan into it (on high) - see if that makes the crashes take longer. If that's the case, then do it again without the house fan. As soon as the system crashes - unplug the system from the wall, grab hold of the metal of the case with one hand, and with the other hand feel around (BUT DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING - I have received 2nd degree burns when doing this!!!) to see if there's anything that's really hot (when getting close you'll feel the heat - so you don't have to touch it in order to find it).
- Run the video stress tests at Hardware Diagnostics
If they all pass, then make sure that you run Prime95 and the CPU stress tests

Next, the WiFi card is still a possibility. There are several ways to test this:
- does the system crash when using a wired connection?
- try another wireless card
- see if it crashes as quickly when you have the house fan on it. Check the wifi card/chip for overheating (feel near it - but DO NOT TOUCH!!!).

Ran prime95 no probs, Furmark GPU ran at 67c no probs, Memtest 5 passes no errors, don't know what else I can do

I've heard through the grapevine that some display drivers on a 64 bit operating system have adverse effects with 12gb of RAM or higher, could removing one of my sticks possibly help resolve this issue?

After 4 hours of Trial and error I pinned this problem down to Pando Media Booster, and pleased to mark this thread as Solved. Thanks to you people for all your time and patience.

You were correct in assuming that the problem lay in the networking sub-system - not the video.
Unfortunately none of the reports pointed a finger at Pando - so it would have taken quite a long while to figure this out.
I'm glad that you were able to track it down!

From what I was able to see:
- there were random appearing crashes. Usually a symptom of a low-level driver or a hardware problem.
- there were some video issues, but you can have video problems in any BSOD
- one BSOD actually stated the problem was "Hardware"
- your noticing that it only happened when online was the thing that kept us looking
- nothing pointed to Pando. I have to wonder if Driver Verifier would have helped here.
- Pando works in User Mode - and our work is in Kernel Mode. There are ways for the 2 modes to communicated - but we rarely get involved in that as most BSOD's are solved without it.

Keep an eye out for additional BSOD's for the next couple of days as there were times that you could go 2 days without a BSOD.

Could you please do this? I'm looking for some sign that Pando is spitting out errors in Event Viewer.
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
