PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA Crash after hybernation

For the past few days, my laptop has been crashing upon waking from hybernation. I initially thought it was a trojan or virus, but after poking around more I think its either a HD or driver issue. I installed WhoCrashed and BlueScreenView, which mostly return ntoskrnl.exe, but have also thrown in tcpip.sys, AMPPAL.sys, and usbhub.sys. AsusInstall seems to think I'm up to date on all the drivers, but after looking at some of these files, I'm not so sure. Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much. Dumps attached.

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.

The only 2 3rd party drivers in the raw stack were Diskeeper and AVG. While not a firm diagnostic cause, it gives us a place to start from. Please remove Diskeeper then, should the BSOD's continue, remove AVG (and use the inbuilt Windows Defender and Windows Firewall). IMO AVG isn't likely as it's been updated several times.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thanks so much for the quick reply! I've uninstalled Diskeeper, AVG, NTI, and WinPCap and all the drivers are now updated for ATK and Asus Charger. Before the fixes, I noticed the crashing wasn't just in sleep mode, either. If I completely shut down and let it be for too long, it crashes on boot up. Hopefully this works.

Now we wait.......
Should the system BSOD again, please zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with your next post. If you have difficulties with it, you may have to copy it to your Desktop before trying to zip it up.

Have you run Driver Verifier as I requested?
If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

The following drivers must either be updated - or REMOVED from the system. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

So, I've been running Driver Verifier for about 2 days and I know the computer is crashing, but it hasn't been logging any of it in the Minidump folder. I don't see BSODs, but every time I open the laptop lid out of hibernation, the system does a complete restart. If I follow the Driver Verifier directions and disable the restart, it just sits at a black screen when I open it.

Run video stress tests - there are several at this link: Hardware Diagnostics
Update video, storage, and chipset drivers (at a minimum) - also look for anything that's been updated since the release of Win8 (back in Oct of last year).

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Go ahead and turn off Driver Verifier - then also submit the BSOD reports (as there may be some info in them that isn't evident).

I needed the laptop all week for a bunch of work, so I didn't get time to run through all the tests. Both hard drives pass the Short DST, Short Generic, SMART self test, and Long Generic. I'm not sure what is supposed to happen with FurMark, but I didn't see any overheating or screen distortion and the program crashed.

Checked all the drivers for video, storage and chipset. I think only one had an update since last October, so that's updated now.

I've attached the Admin file from Event Viewer and Dump files.

Furmark crashed? Does it crash each time that you run it?
Make sure that the system is on a hard surface.
If possible, use a laptop cooler and see if that extends the time between problems (probably not significant if it's happening when it comes out of hibernation).

All of the memory dumps blame networking - but none are Verifier Enabled so we don't have a specific driver to blame
Fortunately, 3 of the last 17 memory dumps showed a trace of DptfDevDram.sys - a driver for your Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Driver

Please go here: K56CA - Notebooks & Ultrabooks - ASUS
Go down to the "Other" section and you'll find the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework driver there. Follow the instructions for removing the old driver first - then install the new one.

Please uninstall the Asus USB Charger driver. Feel free to reinstall it once the system has been stabilized.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

    System Manufacturer/Model
    Samsung/NP780
    CPU
Came with the laptop (i7 of some sort)
    Motherboard
Pretty sure that it has one, but haven't checked inside the case!
    Memory
upgraded to 12 gB from 8 gB
    Graphics Card(s)
has switchable - Intel/ATI - Used wrong drivers, now ATI card is inop :( Will have to fix it soon!
    Sound Card
I'm nearly deaf, so this isn't used often
    Monitor(s) Displays
Touchscreen on laptop/32" Toshiba on HDMI (laid the Sharp TV on a mouse and cracked the screen!)
    Screen Resolution
    800x600
    Hard Drives
One Samsung 1tB drive - 5400 rpm. Gonna switch to a 7200/10000 rpm or an SSD (if I can find $500 for a 1tB SSD!)
    - Switched to 500 gB Samsung 840 series SSD - WOW!!!
    PSU
Why do we ask this for laptops?
    Case
Silver with a neat Samsung logo
    Cooling
sub-par, gotta get around to working on it soon Worked on it - still sub-par! :(
    Keyboard

    Other Info
    I'm handsome and a snappy dresser :0)
I've run FurMark a couple more times and it seems it only crashed the once. Every time, I don't see any kind of distortion or increase in temperature.

I've updated the Thermal framework driver, ATK WMIACPI Utility, and some Windows Updates. I've also uninstalled the USB Charger and some other unused programs.

The last 3 or 4 dumps are after these updates.

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8
These all look to be related to networking.
I did see a trace of .NET and USB drivers in one of the memory dumps.
What USB devices are being used on the system?

Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Have you configured the symbol server to msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols??? Also I went through a similar issue which ended up being related to a USB wifi adapter from ASUS and ALFA. I had to change some settings in device manager to not let the computer put the device to sleep, but the crashes eventually stopped happening when i got new wifi adapters
sorry i gotta run now. good luck you guys are on a wild goose check make sure you configred the symbols in windbg
, but you probably know that cheers JG james

    AMD Turion
    Motherboard

    Memory

    Graphics Card(s)

I not only have the symbol server setup correctly (I have even had it checked by the folks who run the symbol server - when troubleshooting issues with the server) - I also have it set to check an alternate server.
I also have the symbols stored on my hard drive - where kd.exe (not WinDbg) checks for them first (it speeds up the processing of multiple dumps).

Frankly, I suspect the Citrix ICA client and it's USB monitor driver ctxusbm.sys - but have no firm basis for this (other than Citrix is a networking company and the driver has USB in it's name).

But, I'd never considered the repeated failure of the symbols for tcpip.sys - and have to wonder if it (tcpip.sys) could be to blame. I'd suggest these 3 things:
1) Run Windows Update several times to be sure that you have ALL updates
2) Run SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt
3) Run DISM this way:
Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after each one:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

If the problem is fixable, you can use this command to repair it (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after typing it:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

From this article: Repair a Windows Image

You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.
