BSOD Driver_Power_State_Failure and locks after hibernate

Brand new Sony Vaio SVS151290X laptop on Windows 8 (5 weeks old), SSD drive (replacing another Sony Vaio that was 8 mos old running on Win 7 that had Power_State_Failures trying to sleep or hibernate as well).
Two issues:
1) Random BSOD, 2 to 4 times a day
You can see from the attached logs, Driver_Power_State_Failures tied to ACPI.SYS and NTOSKRNL.EXE, but having trouble finding the root cause with my limited technical expertise.

2) When hibernating, black screens going into hibernate or coming out of hibernate about every fourth time (hard power off required)

What I have done:
  • Updated Nvidia drivers, all Intel drivers that the Intel site java updater tool could find.
  • Running verifier
  • Deleted every piece of software that I knew I did not need off system
  • Reset Power Mgmt settings to out of the box defaults
  • Captured MiniDump files and exported Event Log (attached ZIP)
  • Tried to run the SF Diagnostic Tool, but it throws an exception and wont do the grab all function
  • Called Sony, they wanted me to format drive and start over. Tried to get them to take it back, but since it just passed over 30 days, they wont do it.

Please let me know what else I need to gather and a tool other than SF Diagnostic (or the trick to get it to run properly)

Device driver list is here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4giRYy-k4CkOXo5ajIzX1lKVUE/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks - I have spent about 10 hours on this over the past week, painful and it will be costly to replace yet a 2nd laptop with a Dell or whatever. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Please turn Driver Verifier off (Delete existing settings) as it's no longer needed for troubleshooting.

I would like to see:
MSINFO32:
Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).

If you're having difficulties with the format, please open an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt and type (or copy/paste) "msinfo32 /nfo %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\TEST.NFO" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then navigate to Desktop to retrieve the TEST.NFO file. If you have difficulties with making this work, please post back. Then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

systeminfo:
Please open an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt and type (or copy/paste) "systeminfo.exe >%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\systeminfo.txt" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then navigate to Desktop to retrieve the syteminfo.txt file. If you have difficulties with making this work, please post back. Then zip up the .txt file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

This may also help:
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

From the dumps this looks to be a low-level problem (either hardware or low-level drivers).
I strongly suspect the Sunbelt/Vipre/CounterSpy software and suggest uninstalling it in order to test.
While testing, be sure to enable Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

CLVirtualDrive.sys Mon Dec 26 08:26:47 2011 (4EF87617)
CyberLink Virtual Device Driver

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics. Let us know the results and we can move on from there.

Nothing additional in the reports. I'd suggest waiting to see if the BSOD's have stopped.
If not, then zip up the contents of C:\Windows|minidump and upload iwt with your next post.
(If you have problems with it, copy it to your Desktop and zip it from there).

I removed the Antivirus program and uninstalled the DVD program that was loading CLVirtualDrive, had a Power_State_failure BSOD this morning. I am attaching the Admin event log and a zip with all my minidump files below. I found the the Sony Firmware Extension Parser that is less than a year old and installed it this morning after the crash. Seems like we are out of bullets if I keep having crashes?

Don't worry about the SFEP driver - it was only the 2007 version that was a problem. I occasionally forget to remove the RED highlighting.

Not much in the Admin Event log - but there's issues with a Group Policy script that's loading. I'm not familiar with GP, so I don't know how significant this is. Let's just hold off on it for now.

2 of the last 4 memory dumps blame KAPFA.sys - a network management tool (Kapfa Agent) from these folks: IT Systems Management Software | Kaseya

I have to wonder if this is a work computer and if other programs are causing issues with these tools. The appropriate place to check on this would be the work IT department.

We're not out of bullets yet - and we rarely run out of them.
Here's what I do:
- first I rule out 3rd party drivers (over 90% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I rule out hardware (less than 10% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I look at Windows problems (less than 1% of BSOD's are due to this - as long as Windows Updates are fully up to date).

We're still looking at 3rd party drivers here - with Kapfa being the most likely at this point.
Kaspersky is also involved, so please remove it and ensure that you TEMPORARILY use Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall.
Also, the Sunbelt ActiveProtection Filter part of VIPRE/CounterSpy from Sunbelt Software is still loaded. Please ensure that the remanants are removed.

Depending on the version that you have, here's the links for the cleanup tools:
Sunbelt CounterSpy: http://sunbelt-software.com/support/vc/CClean.exe
Sunbelt Vipre: http://sunbelt-software.com/support/vc/VClean.exe
FYI - this is the driver that needs to be removed (DO NOT manually remove it - it may render your system unbootable!!!)
sbapifs.sys Mon Aug 29 17:39:53 2011 (4E5C0729)
Sunbelt ActiveProtection Filter part of VIPRE/CounterSpy from Sunbelt Software (may be a part of Lavasoft protection also).
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=sbapifs.sys

Be advised that these are direct downloads, so you should immediately scan them with an antivirus after downloading (and definitely before executing them).

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Well, encouraging. I ran the CClean and Vclean and the system is definitely more stable. It stayed up all day on Sunday without rebooting itself. I did use it last night and it self hibernated since it was running on battery and did not come out of hibernate successfully (went to a black screen). I am going to run it for a day or two and give it a better sample, but its definitely more stable as it was BSODing about every two hours before. Thanks for all your help

KAPFA is still present, as is Kaspersky.
We need to test without them.
1) Uninstall KAPFA. If required for work, then temporarily uninstall and test, then reinstall before returning to work.
2) Uninstall the Kaspersky. Use Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall.

We must rule these out in order to decide if this is a hardware problem or not.
If it turns out to be hardware, then there's a whole bunch of other tests to run ( Hardware Diagnostics )

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!
    Computer type
    Laptop
    System Manufacturer/Model
    Samsung/NP780
    CPU
Came with the laptop (i7 of some sort)
    Motherboard
Pretty sure that it has one, but haven't checked inside the case!
    Memory
upgraded to 12 gB from 8 gB
    Graphics Card(s)
has switchable - Intel/ATI - Used wrong drivers, now ATI card is inop :( Will have to fix it soon!
    Sound Card
I'm nearly deaf, so this isn't used often
    Monitor(s) Displays
Touchscreen on laptop/32" Toshiba on HDMI (laid the Sharp TV on a mouse and cracked the screen!)
    Screen Resolution
    800x600
    Hard Drives
One Samsung 1tB drive - 5400 rpm. Gonna switch to a 7200/10000 rpm or an SSD (if I can find $500 for a 1tB SSD!)
    - Switched to 500 gB Samsung 840 series SSD - WOW!!!

    Antivirus
    Windows Defender and Windows Firewall
    Other Info
    I'm handsome and a snappy dresser :0)
What do you mean by "turned Kaspersky off"? I asked that you remove it - did you do that?

In the future, please zip up your memory dumps so I can download the lot of them at once. I have vision problems and it's difficult for me to keep track of what I've downloaded when repeatedly bouncing back and forth on the Google Docs screen. Thank you.

There are several memory dumps that are Driver Verifier Enabled. Now there are several different questions here:
- was this generated by your settings, or by the built in Windows settings (as STOP 0xC4 Driver Verifier enabled memory dumps can be caused without activating Driver Verifier)
- are the different errors indicative of several different problems - or do they represent different instances of the same problem?

IMO we have most likely ruled out all possible 3rd party driver problems (with the possible exception of Kaspersky drivers - which are known to cause BSOD's on some systems) - so the next step is to run these hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics Please report back with the detailed results and we'll move on from there.
