BSOD when trying to update Nvidia driver

Hello!

Unfortunately I've been trying to identify the location from an issue I have without success. My computer tends to lag and make a sound specific to when a BSOD occurs. Though it wont go into the final stage (The BSOD occurs, it's just the lag - which in the end becomes annoying).

After looking up my HDD, RAM and CPU (they didn't have any issues). I decided to have a look on my 400£ GPU. The drivers I have say my current drivers are up2date (320.18, very problematic drivers). I can recall starting having issues upgrading to these drivers. When I went to Nvidia's site - I saw that so wasn't the case - my drivers were outdated. I downloaded 320.49 and when I tried to install it I received a BSOD. Twice.

I've attached my log.

If something is unclear, do not be afraid to point it out! Every mistake (language-wise) is on my behalf!

Thanks,
Varg

Hello Varg,

I will not be the one to do a formal analysis of your logs; however, your situation peaked my interest when you said it acted like a BSOD but didn't actually BSOD (it just started lagging). So, I took a peek at your Event Viewer logs and I didn't see anything in there (although I could have missed something important). Anyway, my first question is "Did it ever work OK?" If so, would it be possible to try and reinstall the drivers that last worked and see what happens? Any chance you have developed a heat-related issue? Do you have any means of monitoring your GPU temperature? If not, you could try download GPU-Z to do the monitoring.

Yes my computer functioned very well before I updated my drivers. A quick search shows that it affected a lot of people in a negative way. I'm talking about version 320.18. When I first tried to install it I received a BSOD and I posted here, funny enough usasma helped me out and I could install it. I can't recall having this issue before v320.18. If it would be possible to install the previous driver I had? Yes! But the reason why I decided to upgrade is because my computer acted a little bit funny (Changing graphical options without my permission so I thought updating my drivers would fix it - and it did!)

I can't exclude the option that my GPU has developed some kind of heat-issue. Unfortunately I don't have anything to monitor it with - but I'll give GPU-Z a try! I'll quote you again with a response!

Just FYI - the uploads show 2 memory dumps from 18 Sep.

Hi Usasma!

Thanks for dropping by again, you were very helpful last time I had some issues, and you solved them! I followed your instructions but when I tried to install the drivers I received another BSOD. This is what I did:

- I went to Windows Update and installed 31 Very Important updates.

- Amongst the Updates from Windows there was something called Intel(R) Smart Connect Technology. As I scanned the Internet for proper drivers (Intel's website) and didn't find anything - I assume these are the drivers I need. I also scanned my computer at Intel's website for missing drivers and it didn't point out anything about Intel(R) Smart Connect Technology - infact it told me I had every single up to date driver.

- I went on to install the Realtek HiDefinition Audio driver by downloading it from the official site. It automatically uninstalled the older drivers and then installed updated ones. I automatically assume that these were the only outdated drivers (everything in blue is just information, right?)

Here's the new log from the new BSOD (Yes, the log from yesterday is from 18 Sept cause it occured 1 AM and this one is from 6 PM)

PS. I didn't use the Driver Verifier settings - it all felt too advanced for a simple PC User as me but I'll definately have to do it if this log doesn't give you new answers.

Thanks!

My drivers finally installed without any BSODs! :) I have a lot to thank you for! I also want to let you know that I haven't faced a single issue since I updated sound drivers (lag with BSOD noice). If I get anymore issues I'll make sure to come back!

PS. Should I reinstall the XBOX USB-controller drivers or forget about them?

Spoke too soon! I tried opening up a Word-document to continue with my work and my computer received a BSOD.

Here's the log:

Wait on reinstalling the XBox USB for about a week or two. That'll make sure that the system is stable. Then, if the BSOD's recure you'll know it's the XBox USB stuff.

A new Nvidia driver was released today and I installed it without any problems. This was in the release highlights:

  • Fixes a gamepad issue on certain Windows 8 systems.
Should I reinstall my drivers for the pad?
