BSOD- DPC_Watchdog_Violation

So, I see this BSOD everyday. The error reads "DPC_Watchdog_Violation"

I've used Bluescreen Viewer to look at the mini-dump files for the answers and found the bug check code to be 0x00000133 and the driver to be hal.dll (Hardware Abstraction Layer DLL). I haven't made any hardware changes in months. This has happened before and went away for a few months and now it's happening again.

All the info the SF Diagnostics Tool gathered is attached.

I'm new to this forum and help would be appreciated. I'm in college right, so I can check back pretty often.

Your BIOS dates from 2008. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. There is a possibility that your system may not be fully compatible with Win8 (and you may have to downgrade to Win7 or earlier in order to get a stable system). Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

Only 76 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 100 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

this device is disabled. Is it deliberate? If so, why?
Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4318&SUBSYS_7D0A1799&REV_02\4&3BB8BAF&0&3840 This device is disabled.
Please either remove the device and it's drivers from your system - or enable the device and update it's drivers. Feel free to disable the device again once the drivers are updated.

Razer GameBooster is known to cause BSOD's on some systems. Please uninstall it in order to test it.

Riva Tuner (along with MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision) are known to cause BSOD's in some Windows systems (it's driver is usually RTCore64.sys). Please un-install it immediately! (also uninstall MSI Afterburner).

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

I would suspect that this is likely to be a hardware error - but it could also be low-level driver problems. Please start by running these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics I suspect the hard drive(s) so please start with those tests.

I was able to boot my system into Hard Drive test and I did both a full scan and quick scan, and they both passed without need of repair.

I also booted into Memtest and it is currently running. The current run time is 2hours 42min. with '2' passes and '0' hours found. I'll run it for a minimum of 6 hours.

I also used the Virus scanner and power remover but did not find anything.

Since, I don't feel like the Memtest will find anything, some more steps would be greatly appreciated.

I would continue with the rest of the hardware diagnostics (Furmark, Prime95, the second set of video diagnostics, and the CPU tests).

It is beginning to look like it could be that the system just isn't fully compatible w/Win8 (I have a Lenovo w/2008 BIOS that can't run Win8) - so you might start considering installing Win7 instead.

BSOD [Upadate#2]

Alright, I've run all of the hardware diagnostics that I was told to run and I may have some important information/progress to fixing this. The two programs that may lead to the problem are Prime95 and FurMark.

With FurMak, my temperatures for my Nvida Card reach a maximum of (96)degrees. Then, it will throttle down 475MHz to reach (95)degrees. When it reaches (95) it will throttle back up to the normal MHz only to reach (96) again. So, it's a maximum temperature cycle of throttling up and down bouncing between those two temperatures.

When I go to run Prime95, my PC crashes a lot sooner than when it would when I would do something else CPU intensive (ex:games). I haven't been able to run the test for long without my PC crashing. Also, after I got the BSOD a few moments ago, my computer restarted and I got another BSOD even before I got to see my Windows 8 lock screen. After the first crash while running Prime95, I saw my mini-dump and I saw a new error that said " netbios.sys". [I don't have that mini-dump anymore because I accidentally deleted it while trying to add it to my old zip file to re-upload here.]

If what you're saying about my bios not being able to run Windows 8, why isn't it compatible now, after all this time of no problems. I just hate the idea of having to pay $100+ to downgrade.

It wasn't compatible all along - it's just that the combination of 3rd party drivers and Windows Updates didn't affect the system until it reached this point. I can't be certain of this as I haven't spent time tearing my hair out over this system. I can tell you that I spent a lot of time tearing my hair out over my Lenovo - and even brought it to MVP Summit last March and no one there could help either. The "test" here is to see if these strange issues go away with Win7. You may be able to install a trial (non-activated) version to see if it fixes the errors (before buying a copy of it).

That being said - video temps in the mid 90's aren't healthy, so you'll need to find a cooling solution that keeps the card much cooler than that.

As for Prime95, it stresses 3 things:
- RAM
- CPU cache
- memory controller (I believe this is embedded in your CPU - but you'll have to research it to be sure)
Try the CPU stress tests listed at this link: Hardware Diagnostics

Downgraded to Win 7 - Same problems

Well, I've come back with some news. I've now been running Windows 7 - Ultimate 64bit for two days. I've updated to all of the most recent windows updates and installed all of the most recent drivers. However, my computer still freezes even when my GPU isn't running at high temperatures.

There is a hardware issue, even after running the test, I haven't been able to pin-point the exact one. Also, after to computer freezes, I don't receive a BSOD so I can't generate any mini-dump files.

Please submit the blue screen reports anyway - they provide other info (especially the MSINFO32 report).
Also, Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Finally, another story..... :0)
A while ago we were troubleshooting a video card from a major manufacturer in an OEM system and couldn't figure out why there were problems with the video. The temperatures were normal.

While fiddling around inside the case I accidentally brushed against the video card - and got a 2nd degree burn!
I went back and checked the temps - and they were still normal (mid-60's).
It turns out that the sensor wasn't detecting the overheating. A new video card fixed that problem.

Have you rerun the video stress tests on the Win7 installation? If so, do you still have overheating problems while under stress?

The card temperature is still jumping between 95 and 96 degrees, just like in Win8. It took 8min and 100% GPU load to reach this temperature. I'll upload the Event Log and the info the diagnostics tool picked up.

I don't have the funds to buy another graphics card right now, so I called back home to see if my Video Card box still has the warranty information.

Thanks a lot for all of the help, hopefully people who find this post can get helped with the same problem.

Make sure that you've run the hard drive tests that I asked for. There are some disk controller errors in Event Viewer. Link to HDD diags: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure Disk controller errors aren't definitedly hardware - so the diagnostics are called for in order to rule it out.

No more memory dumps in the uploaded reports - but plenty of Event ID 41 errors in Event Viewer (Windows doesn't know why it shut down). These symptoms are usually related to hardware problems - so we're still looking at the video card/hard drives

MSI Afterburner (along with Riva Tuner and EVGA Precision) are known to cause BSOD's in some Windows systems (it's driver is usually RTCore64.sys). Please un-install it immediately!

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

I ran a bootable copy of Driver Fitness Test already and it passed the test. I'll run it again anyways.
Also, I recieve system crashes with or without MSI Afterburner but I re-stalled it because I noticed that the factory defaults had it slightly over-clocked, so I wanted to change them to it real default but it didn't help.

Since you passed the hard drive test - that leaves the video card.
Good luck!

I'm returned with some news. It turns out my video card can't handle 1920x1080 resolution anymore or it'll crash and shows horizontal wavy lines on the monitor. I've set the resolution to 1600x1200 but it doesn't look good, so I'm going to send the VGA card back to the manufactuer because I have a 3 year warranty on this card. I'll mark this as solved once I've spent a little bit more time with the system to make sure that is the only problem before I send it off.
