Solved Random BSODs

Hello,

I have recently replaced my motherboard and my processor and since the upgrade I have been experiencing random bluescreens. At the time I was running win7 and the error codes I got were:
irql_not_less_or_equal
page_fault_in_nonpaged_area
system_thread_exception_not_handled

I ran memtest86+ for 20h without finding any errors and began suspecting it was a driver issue.
Did a fresh install of win7 but the problems continued and I figured I'd try win8 instead.

The bluescreens seemed to go away for a couple of days but now they've returned. WhoCrashed suggests that it's related to my video card (nvidia gtx 580, drivers v320.49) but I can't tell if I damaged the card in the upgrade or if it's the drivers. The card and the same drivers were used in the old setup without problems.

Thank you for any help!

Unplug the system from the wall, remove the video card (using anti-static precautions), clean the slot out with canned air, reinsert the video card making sure that it's firmly and correctly seated, reconnect everything (making sure everything is firmly connected) and test.

You have 4 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.

These devices have problems in Device Manager:
SM Bus Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C22&SUBSYS_50011458&REV_04\3&11583659&0&FB The drivers for this device are not installed.

Microsoft Basic Display Adapter PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0412&SUBSYS_D0001458&REV_06\3&11583659&0&10 This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.
The first one is likely a part of your chipset drivers - please install them. The second is likely related to your video card - have you installed the latest, Win8 compatible drivers for your nVidia card (available from Drivers | GeForce )?

I'm pretty certain that this is a problem with the hardware on the video card (you've replaced the drivers numerous times without success). After you've removed/reinstalled the video card (and given us the specs on your PSU) then I'd suggest trying the video stress tests listed here: Additional Hardware Diagnostics

The final test will be to replace the video card with another one (if you have another one on hand that you know is good). If you don't have one, then you'll have to purchase one. Please be sure to purchase it from a retailer that will allow returns and full refunds of your money (in case you don't need it). This could also (for example) be a problem with the motherboard (I ran into this at work last week) - so be sure to complete all tests.

Hello Usasma, and thank you for your reply!

Unplug the system from the wall, remove the video card (using anti-static precautions), clean the slot out with canned air, reinsert the video card making sure that it's firmly and correctly seated, reconnect everything (making sure everything is firmly connected) and test.
Ok, I will do that.

You have 4 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?
My PSU is a ~2 or 3 years old Corsair HX1000W.

The SSD firmware is the latest available.
All controllers have drivers from 2013 except the ones from Microsoft. The one from Microsoft is from 2006 and there are no updates available, that I can find.

I thought I did that. Must have confused it with the win7 reinstall. Anyway, now it's done.

The second is likely related to your video card - have you installed the latest, Win8 compatible drivers for your nVidia card (available from Drivers | GeForce )?
Yes, the nVidia drivers I have installed are the latest win8 compatible non-beta drivers.

My CPU has integraded graphics, would that work or do I need a card in the PCIe slot? I'll try that if the video stress test fails.

This could also (for example) be a problem with the motherboard (I ran into this at work last week) - so be sure to complete all tests.
I'll keep that in mind.

Thank you, I appreciate your help.

You can use the integrated graphics, but make sure that you remove the video card from the system.
This doesn't rule out the mobo - but it's a start and is less expensive than getting a new card!

FWIW - I tried 3 different cards in the system at work. All 3 had problems, but the integrated card didn't. That's how I figured out it was the mobo rather than the video card.

I continued to see the bluescreens even after removing the video card and removing all drivers.
This morning I went and bought a new mobo and since I installed that one I haven't seen a single bsod. Before I replaced it I couldn't use the computer for more than 15-30 minutes and now it's been up and running the whole day.

Thank you for your help!
