New computer gets BSoD too often

I got this computer 5 days ago and I get BSoD so often and I don't know why.

Every time, the error is DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE with a value of 0000009f. Pretty sure it has happened 8-9 times overall.

Sometimes I'm in a game, sometimes I'm installing something but most of the time I'm not even doing anything that's remotely heavy on the computer - it just happens.

I really hope some of you can help me.

EDIT: Had a 10th crash, re-uploaded zip file.

All BSOD's were caused by usbhub.sys which is a driver for your USB devices. Please unplug any USB device to see if you still have the problem.
In addition, go to the MSI website:

  1. Update the chipset driver (the USB driver is usually included in the chipset driver)
  2. Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed in your laptop.

Thank you, I don't have any USB device plugged in.
Chipset driver has been updated.

How do I know which BIOS to install? I see two on the website but I don't see the difference.
MSI Global GE60 2OC (Win8 64)

Also, is BIOS update not just as easy as starting an .exe file? This link from the MSI site makes it seem very complicated.

Yes, they are different:
Version 510 is for AHCI Mode
Version 710 is for RAID Mode

You can find out what mode you are running by going into the BIOS. I would assume you are using AHCI mode but to make sure, please verify it from the BIOS screen.

It is not as complicated as you think. Just follow the instruction step by step or install the live update utility and let it update the BIOS.

NOTE: Since your Laptop can BSOD during update using Live Update, I would suggest you use the USB stick to flash it.

I've done everything until step 11 in part 2. The USB drive just doesn't show up. What am I doing wrong?

I mean, in step 7, I have way more files than just those three. Try downloading the BIOS thing yourself.

And I'm really not that tech savvy. I don't know what you mean by using the USB stick to 'flash' it. Can you explain further?

flashing, updating, installing the BIOS ====> Same meaning.

Did you format the USB stick with FAT32 format in step 5 ?
There are 2 zip files you need to download:
  1. efi_auto.zip ====> contains code to boot from the USB Stick
  2. w8_E16GCIMS.510.zip ====> Contains BIOS and executable to flash the BIOS
You have to extract these 2 files to the root folder of the USB stick.

When done, from the USB root folder, you should see 2 folders: efi, E16GCIMS.510

Thanks for continuing to help me.

I guess I misunderstood step 7 (the step between 1 - 2 for some reason).
I thought the files inside w8_E16GCIMS.510.zip should be extracted to EFI\BOOT\.

The USB stick is FAT32.
I now have two folders on the USB stick, one called EFI and one called E16GCIMS.510.

Now, when I get to step 11, all I see is this which was also what I was getting before:

Boot up Windows 8 then insert the USB stick in the USB slot. Does Windows detect it ?

Bump again.

I figured out what's causing it. It only happens when I have my Bluetooth mouse connected. Then I can use my computer for about an hour before it gives me a BSoD. I have used my computer for several days without it during school and then it never crashes.

Please, can someone help me? I need to use my mouse.

Your specs do not tell me what MSI Model # is your Laptop. However, I assume most MSI laptops have the built-in bluetooth device.

Did you connect your bluetooth mouse with the built in bluetooth or via the USB bluetooth dongle that came with the mouse ?

Do you have a blue tooth dongle that came with the mouse ? you can try to use it instead of trying to connect with the built in blue tooth.

Were you able to update the bios ? Since you think the BSOD was caused by the Blue tooth mouse, you can try to update the BIOS via live update without the mouse.

I don't have any bluetooth dongle, I just use the built-in thing.

I was never able to update the bios due to the USB thingie not showing up during one of the last steps as I took a picture of.

I don't think I can use Live Update. On MSI's website, it says it's only intended for desktops. Mine's a laptop.
